Leave Steven alone! You're lucky he even built stuff for you bastards!

    • People would be typing load commands to run programs rather than pointing and clicking with a mouse.
    • People would still be paying $16 dollars for a CD with one or two good songs and 10-11 songs of crap.
    • People would still be taking it up the ass on crappy phones with crappy software.

If you people knew how many Apple fanboys/fangirls I have to deal with at work, you would shed tears for me.

I don't understand why anyone thinks anything is going to change at all... The only difference is that he's probably going to be douching around Infinity Loop a little less.

The only thing that will change is there will be a slight dip in the stock for at least tomorrow if not over the next several days. It won't crash, it won't fail, it won't skyrocket. Just a slight dip, similar to the last time he was sick and the media found out.

Apple really isn't a problem, Apple fanboys are a huge problem. The company has designed a lot of solid products, albeit overpriced and sometimes unnecessary.

Yes, I know it makes me uncool to defend Jobs and Apple in BG. I know the mob in BG likes to praise the copypasta companies. I am OK with all of that. However, even as you praise the copypasta companies, you are indirectly thanking Jobs for having the balls to challenge the status quo by at least asking the question, "Maybe there is a better way?"

Jobs was always working on the "next big thing." He was interested in innovating and was never afraid to scrap the old design and start again from scratch. And because of this the copypasta companies were challenged to adapt or die.

The iPhone is just one of many examples where he was laughed at for sticking his neck out. We thought, "$600 for a phone? FAIL. Leave the phone making to the experts." But then people actually used the phones and thought, "Wow, I actually like using my phone for the first time ever!" We were taking it up the ass by the phone makers for so long we never knew what was even possible. And the copypastas saw this and finally gave the customers what they never knew they wanted in the first place.

Of course it helped that Eric Schmidt stole the idea and repackaged it as Android.

My point is that we should be thankful that people like Jobs and companies like Apple exist. Their (or should I say, "Our") primary goal is not dominate market share or make tons of money. The primary goal is "to build the best thing we could build."

Even if you choose not to buy Apple and buy the alternative, we can all be thankful that there are companies out there that are trying instead of just mailing it in. Companies that aren't afraid to fail in the pursuit of something truly great.

Apple is 99% marketing and 1% innovation. I'm not sure how well they will do once they lose their mascot.

    [edit]
And to be clear, the innovation was the discovery of a class of people who are willing to toss a lot of money at cool looking, but mostly useless, gadgets.

Apple created the modern smartphone market, the idea of the "App store"(Which is in EVERYTHING now), the tablet market, many windows features were OSX features first, etc.

Being an anti-fanboy is just as bad as being a fanboy. Apple isn't my favorite company, but to deny that they've been industry innovators because you don't like them is disingenuous at best.
(not directed at arch above me, just the thread in general)

A few have tried before, but without a platform that you're in complete control of, it's hard to be succesful.

I worked for many big names in the computer and technology industry (Intel, HP, NEC, Siemens, etc.) When I started at Apple, I was a Windows guy all the way. After three months of working there I still bought a PC when I refreshed my home system. I kept telling myself that Apple was just a paycheck.

After working on all day long on a Macbook Pro and using OSX to do my job, I started to realize that I would reach for the MBP at night also rather than the PC. Despite my initial resistance, Apple won me over and the koolaid was mighty tasty. I still do not consider myself a fanboy however. My appreciation of Apple products is more like pride in my company. Something that was completely alien to me before this.

The people I work with are some of the brightest and most talented people I have ever worked with before. Sure there are assholes in the company to be sure. (As in most companies.) The stress and pressure is huge. And the expectations of the individual are almost unrealistic. However, I have never had so much satisfaction about what I did before. This quality is not unique to Apple. I'm sure it would feel much the same working for some company like Google. However, these companies are few and I for one appreciate them and what they try to do.

I used to work for companies that were only interested in making products cheaper and cheaper so they can gain market share and revenue. I was never proud of what we made.

When Steve Jobs told the employees that we were entering the phone business, he never said he wanted to dominate the market. He said his goal was to capture just 10% of the smartphone market. Not the whole cellphone market. Just the smartphone market.

The dude is a visionary. On the day of the launch he gave a speech to the employees to let them know just how big this was for the company. Most of us just thought of this as just another product we are going to sell, like a monitor or an iPod. He knew even before we sold our first phone that this was something that would change the company and the phone industry forever. I just remember that day him being so confident and me thinking that guy is nuts. At the end of the speech he told us that he was giving everyone in the company a free iPhone so that we remember this day. I know that Archibaldcrane will throw up in his mouth a little when I type this (an maybe that's why I'm typing this) but I felt a little like some Braveheart moment when the crowd roared.

I guess I'm just trying get my head wrapped around an event we all knew would happen sooner than later. It is going to be a new chapter for the company and I'm not afraid to admit that it worries me. It's like I found my own work utopia after all these years of searching and I don't wanna give it up. It might not win me friends on gaming forums but I like my koolaid.

    /salute Steve

There are very few things that Apple actually invented that these kids are convinced they did. Next thing you know, Apple invented the tablet... the touch-screen... the MP3 player... THE FIRST DEVICE WITH ONE BUTTON.

Apple and their zealous users are a cancer on the advancement of modern technology. As much as I wish Steve Jobs' stepping down would bring the whole company crumbling down, it won't. They will continue to repackage existing devices and technology in white plastic or silver aluminum with unnecessarily "simplified" and contrived interfaces and people will continue to fork over money, half of which goes purely towards the product being a status symbol.

Tim Cook looks a fuckin' lot like Steve Jobs to begin with... I'm sure the retarded masses will not have a problem switching over to the, now, most powerful gay guy on the planet. All it takes is Steve Jobs' incredibly impersonal "letter" to the public saying he thinks Tim should be his replacement for people to accept him.

By the way, who gives a fuck who was the inventor of such and such? People like driving a Mercedes but they know they didn't invent cars. Are you saying you prefer Walkmans and boomboxes when you want to listen to music on the go?

If you are going to like a product then like a product because it does the job you want it to do the way you want it to. Don't like it because it's not made by Company X.

I usually stay away from posting on Apple related threads because I know this forum. But don't think I haven't been reading. I know that some people who were saying at the time of the iPad launch "WTF, the iPad is just a big touch, why would anyone get one?" are the same people who posted "OMG, the Xoom/Transformer/TouchPad looks awesome."
