There are very few things that Apple actually invented that these kids are convinced they did. Next thing you know, Apple invented the tablet... the touch-screen... the MP3 player... THE FIRST DEVICE WITH ONE BUTTON.

I usually stay away from posting on Apple related threads because I know this forum. But don't think I haven't been reading. I know that some people who were saying at the time of the iPad launch "WTF, the iPad is just a big touch, why would anyone get one?" are the same people who posted "OMG, the Xoom/Transformer/TouchPad looks awesome."

Yes, I know it makes me uncool to defend Jobs and Apple in BG. I know the mob in BG likes to praise the copypasta companies. I am OK with all of that. However, even as you praise the copypasta companies, you are indirectly thanking Jobs for having the balls to challenge the status quo by at least asking the question, "Maybe there is a better way?"

Jobs was always working on the "next big thing." He was interested in innovating and was never afraid to scrap the old design and start again from scratch. And because of this the copypasta companies were challenged to adapt or die.

The iPhone is just one of many examples where he was laughed at for sticking his neck out. We thought, "$600 for a phone? FAIL. Leave the phone making to the experts." But then people actually used the phones and thought, "Wow, I actually like using my phone for the first time ever!" We were taking it up the ass by the phone makers for so long we never knew what was even possible. And the copypastas saw this and finally gave the customers what they never knew they wanted in the first place.

Of course it helped that Eric Schmidt stole the idea and repackaged it as Android.

My point is that we should be thankful that people like Jobs and companies like Apple exist. Their (or should I say, "Our") primary goal is not dominate market share or make tons of money. The primary goal is "to build the best thing we could build."

Even if you choose not to buy Apple and buy the alternative, we can all be thankful that there are companies out there that are trying instead of just mailing it in. Companies that aren't afraid to fail in the pursuit of something truly great.

There is one thing you have to give credit to Apple for and it's in creating an amazing, near perfect, user experience. While it isn't hard to provide such a polished UX when you lock down most avenues and force people down one, it's still well done and they sell that experience very well. Steve Jobs is a pretty ruthless dude and definitely fierce, the company will not be the same without him leading it, honestly. The stocks will be dropping by quite a bit due to this.

Is it true he has pancreatic cancer? If so, he's pretty much dead... which is really sad. I will admit Jobs is a pioneer and has changed the game quite a bit, but this whole illusion that Apple is an engineering machine when it really is just all in the marketing is wearing thin on me. Apple used to be about innovation and doing things differently so that the few who appreciated its prowess could benefit when the situation called for it. Now that the iPhone hit it big, they have their noses shoved up their asses and are doing everything they can to shove the "user experience" down everyone's throat.

I admittedly was going to buy a MacBook or a G-series Mac until they started using Intel chips. Everyone started buying them and was acting like it's the greatest thing ever when it's really just a different operating system now. They don't even make their own parts. They never have... yet you have rabid fanboys acting like Apple just created a new AA battery because the Apple logo is on it. Get real.

Ive been using Palm products (Treo/Centro) since the early 2000s when everyone still had brickphones. Unfortunatly they didnt properly evolve their phones so they suck balls now. While people were playing that drug wars on their Nokias, I was watching full length movies.

And then theres the Japanese phones, where theyre still shitty flip phones, their OSs and tech behind them are leaps and bounds passed IPhones.

Remember, Apple did have the Newton platform, which predated Palm (in terms of PDAs anyway, first Newton in '93, first Palm in '96).

While they may have been late to the game with phones, they were fairy early in the PDA arena.


It'll be interesting to see where Apple heads post-Jobs, 'cause regardless of whether he's a dick or not (he is), Jobs did a stellar job refocusing the company and making it (obscenely) profitable.
