One of my pet peeves:

People who insist MP3 Player != iPod

Once, I was approached by a girl in her 18s with her mum for advice on what music player to get. As she was not too well off, I recommended a handful of generic Mp3 Players. She insisted they won't play her music/CDs and only the iPod will. I say they're the same thing and will play all music regardless. She insisted it's not. I kinda stopped there and just showed her one of the random iPods.

Yeah. Apple may do it...but they're far from the only ones. Being maybe the only major PC company that hasn't just farmed out their entire design process out to Asia might have something to do with the visibility in the U.S. as well.

thats like chevy making a motor for ford and not being able to use it in their own cars, or being able to use other motors with the same horsepower

I knew when I checked in on this thread today that I would have a ton of comments asking me to suck a dick and to kill myself. I am fine with it. I am not going to try to change the mind of anyone whose idea of winning a debate is to call them a bunch of names.

Point is, I'm not arguing that apple sucks - I liked my iPhone 3G fine (until they forced the iOS4 onto it, then it sucked balls) and I liked my iMac (until it shit the bed, but it was old) and I loved Final Cut Pro 7.0 (until they came out with X, which lol) and I work every day on a Mac Pro tower which runs beautifully.

You don't need to change my mind about apple products, I like them fine. I recognize that the Macbook aluminum casing is still probably the top-tier of laptop housing, and that the capacitive touchscreens on iPhones are probably the best, snappiest, most responsive touchscreens on a mass-market phone. They have some superior and unparalleled manufacturing/parts and it helps keep them very competitive, for good reason.

However, your idiot slavish devotion "and I don't care who knows it!" makes people like me, who generally likes their products for their relative merits, facepalm. Shit is situational, apple isn't always the answer, there are things Windows/Android/other tablets/other phone makers/other MP3 players do BETTER THAN APPLE.

Apple doesn't lead a torch into the wilderness and everyone else hopes to trail behind just to catch a glimpse of the light. Apple is pushed to "innovate" by it's competition as much as vice-versa. Your failure to acknowledge that, and especially your derisive comments about everything non-apple "the copypasta companies" are juvenile and pathetic.

It may be dumb, but if that's those were the terms that Samsung agreed on, then that's how it is. There aren't manufacturing facilities for those parts in the U.S. If Apple financed upgrades to produce them, or contributed parts of the design, paid for research, whatever then producing them may be all that Samsung is licensed to do. I dunno...just saying that it's not necessarily that simple.

To me, it's a "don't hate the player hate the game" situation. Apple may be a higher profile company for lawsuits, but the basic problem is stupid patent laws/processes that should be changed. If they were laughed out of court by a legal system that actually had the slightest clue about how to handle software patents/etc, then they wouldn't be doing it. They get sued plenty themselves.

Yeah, I feel like the correlation between Apple and car companies is unequal if only because the tech world's lawsuits are, I think, more of a result of shit ass software patent law that's both outdated and under-equipped to deal with real software patents. In that regard there's blame to go around for everyone because of what we've already seen recently with Google buying up tons of random patents just to be able to sue and counter-sue others within that circle of companies.

Fewer people remember that Jobs also has ties with Disney and has been on the board of directors of the entertainment giant for the past five years. Bloomberg.com reported last night that Jobs is expected to stay on the Disney board for the foreseeable future.

Bloomberg also noted that Jobs was the only Disney board member who was unable to attend 75 percent of board meetings due to health considerations. At his own request, Jobs does not receive compensation in his role as a Disney board member.

It seems all sources seem to give the same report that he's been missing 75% of the meetings due to health, so anyone trying to claim this is anything but the fact he's sick is retarded.

Apple is good at creating market disruptions and capitalizing on them with high-margin products designed with a streamlined end-user experience (regardless of other compromises that experience entails).

They make a wave. Other companies eventually jump on the wave, and in the long run tend to out-innovate Apple.

Apple will continue to be a powerhouse so long as it can make new waves. After that, or after a couple of the waves are duds, Apple will fade away. They won't die entirely, but they'll lose their place in the spotlight.

Already Apple is being left behind in the tablet space (the iPad sells like gangbusters, but it is simply inferior to many Android tablets which have better hardware, better software and a more open platform to build on). It is at risk of being on even footing in the phone space (iOS5 will make or break the future of the iPhone given the current state of Android hardware and software). It is, as it always has been, a niche player in the PC space, with high-quality products at outrageous prices.
