My guess is we'll have a new POL account to go with this, and that'll be used by the server to determine which version of the game you'll be issued. Wouldn't surprise me to see any update files associated with the test server to appear in their own dedicated folder also. There's no reason to have to have every player download the files if they're not using the test server.\

I think it will be its own content ID and not have anything to do with the actual game. At least, I don't have a currently active FFXI/POL account, but I'm going to see if I am able to play on the test server anyhow, since it's probably (hopefully even!) just a 'have files installed? sign up, make char, here's the patches' thing.

If they're expecting more than a couple hundred people to sign up (which they are) they'd better not limit it to people who currently have an account. In fact, it would be wiser to let anyone join, as it might start them playing the actual game or want to return to it. Although knowing SE you're probably right...

I wonder if they are opening up atomos with server side adjustments, or if it's going to be a completely different server.

If its a different server then what the fuck do they use Atomos for? They have internal test servers, and didn't they have the ballista finalists gather in Jeuno on Atomos too other than that it looks like it just catches dust.

It's probably like the debug mode the actual company testers get - that's unlock all jobs to 95, capped gil, capped everything instantly.
