THE POOP, IT DONT END
THE POOP, IT DONT END
Darus, if you can't use semicolons correctly, then you should probably stick to the tried-and-true period. I'm sorry, but that's a pet peeve of mine. lol
Feel free to continue the silly thread.
It's correct, or at least the first one. Never made it past ENG105 to dispute or confirm the 2nd usage.
The first one in his last post was correct; the second one wasn't correct. He's used upwards of 20 semicolons in a mere handful of posts, though, when a significant amount should have been commas (as signified by the coordinating conjunctions).
They were all used "correctly" since one of the "proper"(lol) usages of a semi-colon is to distinguish a pause that's greater than a comma, shorter than an ellipse, and doesn't break like a period. I generally use a semi-colon where most people on the internet would put an ellipse.
I also like-to hyphenate things un-necessarily.
The fuck is an ellipse?
Meat has way too many semicolons.
I think darus' point is kinda important... we can all agree the majority of people know shit all about regulating a healthy and effective diet... meat or not. By proxy, someone going vegetarian is likely not to know enough to have a healthy vegetarian diet. I think the effects of having a poor vegetarian diet will be more damaging than a poor diet that includes meat and dairy.
My point with this wasn't to be like "vegetarianism sucks blabla meat blabla", moreso I'm trying to prove to my mom that her doing this (and wasting money on supplements from this batshit website) is not helping her, and possibly hurting her, while wasting money at the same time.
I know it might not be feasible with her living paycheck to paycheck but shop at a Whole Foods. It's the same price / only a litte more expensive for most of it's items and the food they stock isn't loaded with the garbage that things have today. You're just going to pay a bit more for meat because it doesn't come from a hormone driven meat factory farm.
I don't understand the whole kneejerk reaction to jump to vegetarianism. Just cut back on the meat you eat and get the good stuff when you do eat it. If you're worried about the quality of you food then stop shopping at Wal-mart and buying their "Good Value" hormone laced dairy and meat / preservative packed and hydrogenated everything else.
To be fair, if you are a vegetarian, at least you made a conscious choice to exclude meat from your diet, so there is a reason to assume you do care more about what you consume than someone that eats meat.
Not all, but most vegetarians choose to be so based on idiotic ethic principles that have nothing to do with personal health.
The percentage of informed vegetarians who fully understand how nutrients and whatnot work is extremely small compared to those who don't eat meat because it's "evil".
Let's face it the #1 reason people choose to become vegetarians is not to kill animals and that very line of thinking is what's wrong with them.
Vegetarians who refuse to eat meat for ethic reasons are among the most hypocritical people in the world, completely disregarding that their very existance means the death of countless organisms. What's the difference between an animal that dies in order to become food and an animal that dies because of human activity (urbanization, pollution, pesticides, random animal-derivates used in cosmetics and chemicals etc.)?
By refusing to eat meat you're not saving anything. If you understand this simple principle and know how to make a healthy vegetarian diet then more power to you.
I'm a vegetarian. It sounds like your mom is trying to go on a vegan kick. I still eat cheese and what not, thats a bitch to give up..
With that being said, red meat really is bad for you. The problem is the American Diet. Meat is intended for dinner. However, we eat it for all 3 meals. Breakfast comes with Bacon, Lunch comes with a sandwich or some fast food joint, and dinner comes with a large steak or something equally meaty. This really is a terrible diet both for your body, and for the environment.
You can get plenty of protein through other things. For example, rather than milk, drink Almond milk. Eat peanut butter. Eat nuts in general (lol.) and you'll be fine. I think rather than bitch at your mom about this, you should give it a try. It gives you an excuse to eat dishes you normally wouldnt. There are so many amazing vegetarian and vegan dishes out there that people wont try because they have that title. It'll take a bit to adjust, but at the end of the day, I'm sure you'll feel better about yourself, and you'll be surprised how much food you can shovel down your throat without looking like a fat slob.
Just thought I would chime in that I don't think the OP's mom is crazy. As long as she takes the time to figure out how to do it right. Also when a mother decides the families diet and does the shopping and cooking I don't find it strange that their 13 year old daughter would eat the same diet that isn't being forceful at all it is just the way it is. When I was that age I didn't have a drastically different diet from my parents I ate pretty much what they ate. What my mom chose to shop for and cook is what I ate.
You keep making it sound like the mother is force feeding crap to the kid.
Also why don't you tell your mom to just stick to organic meats raised without hormones and chemicals if that is what she is so afraid of. Then she can avoid the things she is afraid of without going all super vegan.
The most convincing anti-meat argument to me is "you are what you eat". Eating things like plants and fruits makes me feel good, but eating meat often makes me feel not-so-good. I've tried giving up meat on several occasions though, it's just too tasty and satisfying once in a while to give up entirely, but I've cut down on it a lot. That said, a lot of what I eat isn't very good for me, I know - lots of carbs and fat in melted cheese and breads like pizza, rolls and hot pretzels XD There's a downside to anything you eat, which is why a diet needs to be balanced. But for me personally, I do feel a little better not eating meat - not because of the 'cute animals' or the hormones or any other popular argument, simply because eating dead flesh feels worse to me.
Organic stuff, though, idk. It's way too expensive and I can't imagine living off of it. That's a severely restricted diet since not everything comes in organic everywhere. I'd say ditch the organic label, at least. I don't think there's often a huge difference between organic and non-organic, honestly, or at least that's what I've read.
I've changed my diet so that I try to only have one meal a day that has meat in it. Even then it's not always red meat. I haven't really missed the extra meat in my diet, I'm down about 20lbs and counting without working out, and I still have all the same amount of protein in my diet from eating things like tofu and seitan.
Better to be something alive than a hunk of dead thing :D
you do realize that plants are dead too
