    Dress advice needed

I'll be going to a wedding in US this fall, more specifically in November and I have absolutely no clue what I'm expected to wear.

The guy I'll be accompanying will be the best man and is obviously going to wear a tux. He's also a guy, so asking him for advise has proven useless.

I've tried to find some guidelines online, but it left me no wiser.

Am I supposed to wear a long dress since he's wearing a tux? Or stick to cocktail? Of what I understand, wearing black is fully acceptable for a wedding in US?

I do have a couple of dresses that I'm considering, but I could also imagine getting a new one.

And yes, there will be pics if you help me out.

Does the bride have a specific color scheme/theme going?

Black to weddings is "fine" depends on the people. Wearing the LBD to a wedding sometime screams "I'm DTF... with whoever."

asking a forum full of men and women more at home at a hockey game than a fancy party... well, most of us are gay, so there's that. have a look at j.crew's fancy clothes line and kate spade. http://www.katespade.com//designer-c...lothing-bridal

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Nowadays it doesn't matter too much unless you make yourself out to look like a hooker or something. Like dress nice but at least somewhat conservative. (doesn't mean you can't wear a cocktail dress though).

Only color that is really bad is to wear white (since that is what the bride is wearing). Black is fine, but color is better (your at a wedding not a funeral).

But really if you don't give a shit about people whispering about you when you'll probably never see them again then you can do w/e you want.

I think the only thing that's really still an "issue" is the white color thing.

White is fine now since most brides are "pure", white has lost it's true meaning, now it's just tradition. It all depends on the bride though. Is there a theme? If so don't go against it. That will be ugly.

^ Try to find out if she has a specific color in mind. If she doesn't really care what you wear go skimpy and try to get some while you're there. It's what I would do but then again I am a man whore for hire.

she isn't in the wedding, she doesn't need to match the scheme. I have yet to see a wedding where guests find comparable colors to the theme

I would try to find a cocktail dress in a fall color scheme and wear that. I personally don't like black or white at a wedding as it's really boring and this is a joyous event.

Rule of thumb as a guest. Find a dress you look good in, wear it.

If it's going to be reasonably warm, I'd go cocktail. In my experience, most of the younger gens seem to rock cocktail dresses and the older gens wear the longer dresses.

    Also, don't wear all-white or all-black.

If it's black tie, wear a full-length dress. If not, cocktail.

What's your relationship to the best man?

    Also, pics, obviously.

Thanks for the input, cocktail in fall colors is pretty much what I'd go for in Sweden.

Tyche, I have no idea how warm it is in MD in November, but I assume not that warm after all.

The best man is a very close friend of mine. I guess you could say I'm going to be his show off item.

Form fitting cocktail dress then. Also squats and lunges to get that butt in tip-top condition.

Can't forget about the shoes though. You have any shoes in mind?

Highs probably in the 50s (12-15 Celsius), a little colder and windy by the Chesapeake Bay. So bring a shawl/wrap/sweater/whatever women wear to stay warm.

My wife always goes with the opposite. She goes out of her way to make sure she doesn't wear colors that match the color scheme of the wedding when we go to weddings. She says it is uncomfortable or tacky if you look like part of the wedding party when you are not.

    Lol
    My butt is fine!
Forgive my lack of fashionable shoe vocabulary, I have two different kinds of high heeled sandals that I'm considering, however, the guy I'm going with isn't all that tall and I'd be like 6 feet on those, so I might get something a little lower. I don't want to look like a rented giraffe after all.

Also not sure if I should really have open shoes for November, or get something like pumps instead. I do have pumps, but those are too high as well and I can't wear them an entire evening without getting pain in my feet.

Going to be in Saint Mary's, so yes, definitely cold then. I have a really pretty shawl that used to be my great grandmother's, so probably going to wear that.
