You gotta like do some quest to open up the new merit category thing in the merit menu then you just have to get merits and dump them in there to get the weaponskills.

It's not really a magian trial from what I've heard. Just a quest, then you get the ability to put merit points into them.

Whoa there buddy, I think you're thinking of someone else. SMN melee is decent enough to work in abyssea, god damn BRD can melee in there...with this WS it kind of sealed the deal. Anything can be a DD in abyssea EXP.
This is the only thing I've ever posted about SMN melee on the official forums and it's 100% true and opinionated:

The Culverin+1 isn't really that bad @99 with its base damage of 51 coupled with the 90 damage shells. The Miramar Gun is 48 base damage for some comparison to baseline AH options for RNG/COR.

When would Last Stand ever be useful for THF is an entirely another question.

I used it almost naked as cor/sam with bedlam+2 (only gear was fast pants), Oberon Bullets, no buffs, 1 merit, 1147 damage to a flamingo in sky.

I was about to start testing it when the test server went down for maintenance.

According to Studio Gobli, it's 2.00fTP (and scales to 2.25 at 300 TP), AGI20%~100% mod. So it's similar to Apex Arrow sans ignore defense effect.
And you can't really compare it to Wildfire for Wildfire is a magical WS where MAB gears and Vulcan's staff are the huge factor coming from gear.
