Tatsuya Minami, Platinum Games President and CEO
On September 13, 2012 Bayonetta 2 was announced as an exclusive title under development for the Wii U during the Nintendo Direction presentation held on the same day.

As game developers, we are incredibly excited to be able to announce a new title to all of our fans; however, we are aware that the announcement may have come as a shock to many of you.

As with Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 is under development and production here at PlatinumGames, and is a true sequel to the acclaimed first game in the series. Bayonetta is one of our most beloved titles, and it played a large part in establishing PlatinumGames as an emerging game studio in the minds of users worldwide. Bayonetta has fans the world over, and we would never dream of alienating them from participating in the future of PlatinumGames.

That being said, the console games market is in a state of upheaval, so establishing a new game franchise requires a considerable amount of will, determination, and love. Bayonetta is a brand that we want to see become stronger, reaching the hands of more and more gamers, so we have continued to consult with SEGA, the previous game’s publisher, on how we can make sure this takes place. Our answer was a new partnership with Nintendo.

Along with their new hardware, Nintendo, as a company, is dedicated to establishing a new future for the games industry, as you can tell by their record of passionate support for gaming. Alongside Nintendo, we hope to grow the Bayonetta brand beyond where it stands today, allowing even more gamers around the world to experience the action of our beloved witch. As developers, we are working hard to make this a reality.

We hope that you will look forward to what we have in store.
    Yusuke Hashimoto, Bayonetta 2 Director
I’m Yusuke Hashimoto, director of Bayonetta 2. It has been three years since Bayonetta, a title I was also a part of… I’m incredibly happy to be able to announce that we are working on a sequel. Alongside Bayonetta’s creator, Hideki Kamiya, I’m working on everything from creating a compelling world to character designs (I will be designing the enemies again), and everyone on our talented team is united around the core of Bayonetta, Climax Action, in an effort push the series forward. For empowering our heroine with incredible new action to introducing new characters (which you may have noticed in the teaser trailer), Bayonetta will further expand on the mythology of the Trinity of Realities – Inferno, Paradiso, and our human world. I can’t wait to take the journey with you
    Hideki Kamiya, Bayonetta 2 Supervisor
After Bayonetta was released, I was coming back on the bullet train with Yusuke Hashimoto, pondering various ideas for sequels or spin-offs to Bayonetta over a beer. I never thought we’d actually get to announce a sequel to her story, so I am absolutely over the moon.

Even though there has been a bit of a gap since the release of the last game, but I still got lots of request for a sequel from gamers. We were secretly making one the entire time. While I am not the director of this game, I am still supervising the world, story, characters, etc. in close coordination with Hashimoto, and I have been from the very beginning. You have nothing to work about on that end. And of course, plenty of members from the first Bayonetta are on-board and working hard under the direction of Hashimoto, so I look forward to work every day, coming in and seeing all the progress they have made on the game. With new hardware, we look forward to expanding on the Climax Action of Bayonetta, so sit tight and get ready!

We would never dream of alienating all our fans who love Bayonetta and made it an acclaimed success, so that is why we made the true sequel to it a Nintendo exclusive.

Other than the install base of Wii U being tiny for a good 2-3 years compared to PS3/360.

Nintendo is likely going to take this project at a loss financially, but they need as many titles as they can get to make the WU look convincing.

people don't seem to understand though. it's either Wii U or this game doesn't exist at all. It never had a chance of being on PS/Xbox. Sega/MS/Sony all weren't willing to publish it.

that doesn't make it any less annoying or shitty to the people who loved Bayonetta and don't have any interest in the Wii U. Obviously any Bayonetta 2 is better than none, but that doesn't make this situation any less shitty for fans of the first one who don't want the Wii U

People shouldn't be pissed at Nintendo or Platinum games though, they should be pissed at Sega for not wanting to publish it, and to a less extant at Microsoft and/or Sony for not wanting to publish it when Sega wouldn't.

And were so successful it forced both their competitors to copy their gimmick.

Will people be pissed when Sony announces the PS4 isn't going to be a huge graphical upgrade (compared to ps2->ps3), and may not even be much more powerful than the Wii U?

Do you really think Sony can afford to make another console that costs them ~$1200 dollars to make (with current gen hardware) that they have to sell for $600? In fact, if they sold it for that much again like the PS3, it would be a mistake. PS3 didn't start selling well until the huge price cuts.

I think Sony and MS' next consoles will be more affordable, and thus less powerful. Neither companies game divisions can afford to take such huge hardware cost losses again.

Also, it's not like PC graphics have gotten much better in the last 5 years. Now a days a graphics card can last you 3-4 years and still play all the top games released every year - back in early 2000s I was replacing my gfx card every year.

somewhat less, since I think the overlap of "likes bayonetta" "will buy ps4" is greater than with "will buy Wii U" but xbros would definitely be kind of pissed, and anyone who isn't planning to upgrade to ps4 at launch

I'm not talking about specs, could care less for that. I mean if it were EXCLUSIVE to an unannounced next gen system other than the WiiU. Would you still be pissed?

The reason for that isn't technology stagnating so much as it is the development focus shifting to primarily console-first rather than PC-first. Game assets are designed around the 360, not cutting edge PC hardware. PC can use higher resolutions, some extra shaders/etc. Sometimes an HD texture pack. Not quite the same as designing from the ground up for DX11, 2GB+ of texture memory, several gigs of RAM, etc.
They've started shifting away from it, probably in part due to next-gen console development starting. Personally, I'm of the opinion that we'll see the bar raised in a hurry when the next-gen consoles do hit and assets are designed around them instead of 6-7 year old consoles.

I'm expecting next-gen XBox and Playstation hardware to at least be 1080p/60fps native, which is a marked improvement over what the current systems are, or what the Wii U has demoed thus far for that matter. The thing is 1080p capable, but (as was already posted I think), the stuff they've been showing is 720p. I agree, I don't think Sony or MS will want to take such large losses again...but I don't think they have to in order to trounce the Wii U's technical capability. They could pull a Gamecube to Wii style hardware upgrade and do that.
Not to mention that the Wii U will probably be diverting a chunk of resources to the GamePad in a lot of titles, which probably won't be the case for the others.
