Persona 4 coming to PlayStation Vita

Persona 4 will see a re-release three years after its original launch, Famitsu has revealed. This time, it’s coming to PlayStation Vita.

Persona 4: The Golden is an enhanced port for Sony’s new handheld, adding new characters, movie events, animated scenes, and more. It will include 1.5 times the amount of voice-overs seen in the PS2 version. Marie, voiced by Kana Hanazawa, is one of the new characters.

Out in Japan in spring 2012, it will utilize the “communications capabilities” of PlayStation Vita.

First, the game everyone was expected, a remake of Persona 4. Atlus is bringing the PlayStation 2 title to PlayStation Vita as Persona 4 The Golden. This new version adds a number of new features:
# A new character named Mary
# 1.5 times the voice of the PS2 version
# Wireless support for calling on others to help you when you're about to die in a dungeon.
# Other elements that fans of the original requested
# New opening anime with new song from Shouji Meguro
# New animation movies

A release is set for Spring 2012.

I expect this site to have the official Atlus announcements, but for now it's only a teaser placeholder.

Persona 4 fighting game coming to PS3, 360

While Persona 4: The Golden is definitely one of this week’s highlights in Famitsu, the bigger news is a new Persona game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. No, it’s not an RPG. Oddly enough, it’s a fighting game by Arc System Works.

Persona 4: The Ultimate Mayonaka Arena is a 2D fighter. An arcade version will debut in spring 2012, followed by a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 release in the summer. Currently, four characters are confirmed: Main/Izanagi, Chie/Tomoe, Yosuke/Jiraiya, and Aigis/Athena.

Soejima, Meguro and Hashino Will Return For Persona 5

This isn’t really news as such, but Famitsu magazine also reports that Persona 5 development arrangements are in place, and the regular Persona team will be handling development of the game.



Katsura Hashino will return as director, Shoji Meguro as composer, and Shigenori Soejima as character designer. No further details regarding the game have been provided.

Persona Team Intimately Involved in Persona 4 Fighting Game Development

Latest details on this week's unexpected Persona announcement.

The big shocker from this week's Famitsu is Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka, an HD fighting game based of Persona 4. A few additional details have surfaced since word of the game first broke earlier in the day.

As detailed earlier (see this story), The Ultimate in Mayonaka is being developed by the BlazBlue staff at Arc System Works. But the Persona team appears to be intimately involved.

Speaking with Famitsu, the game's producer, Arc's Toshimichi Mori, said that he was shocked when Atlus came to them with the offer to work on the title. The BlazBlue team includes many fans of the Persona series, so their motivation for the project was very high, he said.

The Persona team didn't want to just have the BlazBlue team develop the game for them. Instead, they wanted the game to be a joint development project. According to Mori, game's director Takumi Iguchiya (whom you'll recognize as the lead programmer on the BlazBlue series) is working closely with the Persona team.

In addition to the commentary Mori, we have a list of modes that appears in Famitsu:

Arcade Mode: Face off against CPU opponents while following the story
Story Mode: Delve deeper into the arcade mode's story. This will be exclusive to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game.
Score Attack Mode: Face off against CPU opponents to get the high score
VS Mode: Face off against a CPU or human opponent
Online Battle: Face off against players throughout the world in online combat (I imagine that can be taken as confirmation of an international release...)
The game will include original stories for all its included characters, which come from both Persona 4 and Persona 3. The overarching story is set two yeas after the events of Persona 4. The characters appear on a fighting program called "P-1 Grand Prix."

The Ultimate in Mayonaka will be released first to arcades in Spring 2012. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will follow in the summer.

Persona 5 Uses New Internal Engine

Team Persona ditches Catherine's middleware for internal tech.

Some super preliminary details on Persona 5 appear in this week's Famitsu. Actually, scratch that. The magazine doesn't really have any solid information on the game.

In an interview discussing Persona 4 The Golden and Persona 4 The Ultimate in Mayonaka, producer Katsura Hashino said that preliminary development for Persona 5 (which he referred to as "the next numbered title") is nearly complete. From here, the staff will advance into the actual development process.

The key players are returning for Persona 5. Hashino is director. Shigenori Soejima is character designer, and Shouji Meguro is main composer.

They've solidified the themes they'd like to cover in the game. The staff wants to challenge more new things compared to even Persona 3.

Hashino shared one technical bit about P5. For Catherine, Team Persona made use of a third party engine. They've since completed work on their own engine. With this new internal engine, Hashino believes that converting their ideas into game form will go considerably smooth.

However, he warned that he expects a lengthy wait until release.

However, they wanted to retain as much as possible from the PS2 version, as opposed to some of the cuts they had to make for Persona 3 Portable. They deemed this impossible on the PSP. This is when they heard about the Vita, and determined that they could make something even better than the PS2 version.
