Reaper only appearing on ng+ is only for ps2 version. For Golden it can appear on your first playthrough (which it did for me twice). But on my 2nd and 3rd playthrough, I haven't seen it once.

Oh, weird. I've heard the chains and stuff but he's never popped for me.

If you get the extra dungeon stuff, you get more time with Nanako/Dojima
Oh, damn, well then! I doubt I'll max all the slinks on my first playthrough anyway (but I'll still fucking try!) I know for sure I wont finish all the books because I stupidly missed one of the sports events.
The book trophy pretty much need you to be on the balls for the Strength invites, since Kou will give you a book on each occassion, the other one that is missable is the Sun Arcana summer festival, but at least you don't have to kick yourself for missing book releases since it accumulates on the bookstore now.
As for the reaper, I posted this on last page:
Basically, count chest once you enter the dungeon, on the 20th chest (or 19th? I forgot) traesto/goho-m out and save, then go to a floor with at least 2 chest, open 1 chest to hear the chain sounds, then open a non-locked chest for a chance at the reaper. If you get the prompt, then have fun, if not, reset and reload to repeat the process until you do.you need to basically open 20 chests, then on the 21st chest, you'd get the chain sound, and if there is any non locked chest remaining on the floor, it might pop the reaper, opening another chest without reaper or moving up the floor after the chain sounds resets the counter
Reaper will drop the ultimate armor first by default, then Totsukanotsurugi (MC's reaper weapon) then just go down the list on whoever is currently on party, then once everyone in party has their reaper weapon, it will go back to spitting ultimate armor.
Kinda a bitch that the drop works that way, considering the reaper weapon are pretty shitty (high critical, high damage on melee attack for most of them, which you probably wouldn't be doing unless you skip through fight, at which point it doesn't really matter since you're so much stronger than the enemy) and you'd be better off using Daidara's stat boost weapon (my personal preference is Lightsaber for MC, Hattori/Kitchen Knife for Yosuke, Hototogisu for Yukiko, Stellar Greaves for Chie, Aegis for Kanji, Jack Frost Gun or Algeron for Naoto)
Granted, Yukiko gets redundant once you get the ultimate armor since she'd cap around 88 or so magic naturally, but pretty much everyone else would benefit more from stat bonus since you'd almost never use normal melee for anything that you won't just skip through by the time you can kill reapers.
I read that on the last page but it was missing some very important information. Something that maybe they changed with Golden, idk, but I found out that the Reaper will only come up if, after you hear the chains, the very next chest you open is a trap chest (the chest that will cause an enemy to attack you when you open it.). If it's not a trap chest, you just open the chest and it resets the counter.
i'm not sure the algorithm for trapped chest, but i think if you refuse to open the reaper chest, you may lose the reaper when you check the chest again...either that or if you refuse the chest then fight an encounter.
there is no prompt for any chest except the reaper chest and as far as I know trap chests spawn randomly on each floor, though I'm not sure if they would be the same or different if I were to reload a save. From what I've read, the second to last dungeon is the best place for the reaper because it has the highest rate of trap chests.
magatsu mandala may be the case on PS2 version, but in Golden, you're better off getting out and saving after the 20th chest, then just savescum the next 2 chest until you get a reaper.
Sorry for the necro but I just beat this game and err...question about the "true" ending

Spoiler: show
Marie's is the only social link you actually need to max out for the last fight, I believe.
So I had to do her dungeon, too? Le gay.
I think it was Margaret's you needed, not Marie's. She's Empress, right?
I'm assuming the "all optional bosses" part includes the boss of Marie's dungeon, which would still entail maxing her link out.Head to the Velvet room next. If you have maxed out the Empress Social Link, defeated all the optional bosses before this point and you're on your 2nd playthrough, you will also receive an item to challenge the secret and hardest boss
that says the second playthrough. Can you not get the true ending on your first run? I wonder 'cause every guide I read doesn't mention the marie/margaret dungeon, just the gas girl one (which I did).
I pulled it that info from ps3trophies.org. I'm assuming it's accurate, though I personally don't know.
You already beat the game, might as well and try it again!
On my second playthrough, I was literally able to cut my play time in half. Skipping dialog you've already read saves an enormous amount of time.
Ya I know, as I said though it's been a major distraction so wanted to be done with it hahaha.
On another note, I love kanji, and I love the personality of the hero in the anime version~
