This is correct answer. No reason why anyone should not have a PC & internet if they like FFXI, lol. PS2 support has gone on too long imo, should have been cut off late 2009.

you don't need a $1000 machine to run XI at all. back in '04 when the game was still fairly new, sure, but that was a long time ago.

when my laptop died last year and i couldn't afford to replace it, my friend gave me her old PC from 2005 and it ran the game perfectly, i'd probably be lucky to get $50 for the thing if i tried to sell it. you could easily find a used machine in the sub-$200 range on craigslist that will run the game maxed out.

Is PS2 support really holding back new content? I always thought it was just a scapegoat answer on their part, and not really an actual answer as to why they won't implement changes.

It seems to me that new and varied content is implementable using the PS2 and that the survey will just be a way for them to justify the continued support of the PS2. Remember that an online forum is going to contain opinions which are heavily skewed towards the use of PC, because a large amount of us in fact are PC users by virtue of the fact that we are browsing on this forum.

Personally I'd like to see them continue to support PS2 because it's the cheapest and easiest way to set up a second account to use with a main account.

Well, they used it to justify their laziness with some things in the past, but it's not all a lie - PS2 is very limited in terms of memory and they're reaching limits everywhere.

Personally I'd like to see them continue to support PS2 because it's the cheapest and easiest way to set up a second account to use with a main account.

Cheapest way is to have windower and dual box on your computer. No need to throw money at the game for console. Perhaps not the easiest way to setup but once you learn it, it will be infinitely better as you can control the 2nd character from your first too (I think).

The Laptop I use for ffxi for mules isn't even sold anymore, I think from 2006. You can probably get a PC that runs ffxi fine for free even if you actually look for one.

They could just make it direct download for PS3 through the PSN store.

They can either release an updated version like they did for 360 (time/money I know) or just throw the whole PS2 version on there.

XI doesnt run off discs once its installed on PS3.

edit: also decent Phat PS2's, PS2 modems, and complete PS2 FFXI HDD's are kinda rare these days. (Unless you go to Japan they keep their shit in mint condition got a damn near new 2nd hand Dreamcast for $35)

Laziness is never the answer. They have a budget and creating workarounds for ps2's limitations eats some of that budget. It's not surprising they'd rather use the money elsewhere.

I think they'd be interested to know though...how many people play on each version, and if tailoring content for PC, upgrading graphics, overhauls etc would be worth the cost to them for their only money making online program. Not to mention information for future platforms, information for FFXIV (and whether other releases may even be worth it?)

If SE figures well hey, we have this many players that will need to upgrade to new systems, that's 20$, new expansion? 20$ New players because FFXI becomes a real game? 20$ (+20$, potentially) If 300,000 people play FFXI, and 20% play on PS2 only, assuming everyone moves over and everyone buys a new expansion (no torrents, etc) SE stands to make over 7M just from that. (Someone can comment on distribution costs, etc)

Well yeah, I called it laziness, it might be anything, but the truth is they used "ps2 limitations" on a number of occasions to explain why they can't add/fix something, yet after some time they actually did it (directly or in a roundabout way).

Again, my (essentially) $200 PC from 2004 ran the game just fine. If a computer THAT cheap from 7 years ago can run the game fine on lower settings, you should have absolutely 0 problems running the game on ANYTHING made today.
