Not bad at all. No where near as good as the season 1&2 premieres, but sure as hell better than season 3.

Loved the backstory on Celestia and Luna. Probably unlikely, but I hope we see more of the past. Maybe we will since there's more of that deus ex machina potion left.
Loving the new "reformed" Discord as well. Didn't expect to see him this early, but never a bad thing. If he doesn't summon a mariachi band by the end of this season, I might cry.
Overall story seemed kind of downplayed, which is good since this off season seemed particularly long. I haven't done anything pony related for months, so having something a "safe" premier like that with tons to look forward for later seems to be a good start.
Too bad it wasn't the return of Nightmare Moon a lot of us expected. Oh well...

Said pic shows "A.K. Yearling"...who happens to be wearing a rather comical pair of glasses and a baggy dress that completely covers her cutie mark and body. It's the "real" Daring Do in disguise. Note that Daring Do doesn't get a VA credit but A.K. Yearling does in the Hub announcement, something they also pulled with Luna/Nightmare moon in the season premiere to avoid spoiling the whole flashback scene.

DIABEETUS. (I joke, because my girlfriend was diagnosed with it soon after we started plans on living together and is insulin-dependent...and for that matter has had a heart attack and cancer surgery for good measure. She -really- rolled the shit dice for health since we met...)

One of the interesting speculations on how sapient ponies manage to get the energy they need to be properly thinking, magical critters is that since they're not omnivores (at best, they're getting a lot of egg in their diet), what tends to fuel those pony brain cells is sugar, and a lot of it. That is, your little ponies tend to crave sugar like we humans tend to crave animal proteins. Thus, farmers like the Apples or the Carrots do pretty darn well selling produce that's got solid amounts of fructose in them. Pony brains need their sugar to function properly, and someone like Celestia has that cake habit for good reasons- she likely burns it off at a rate that would make fashion models kill for the secret.

The Hub likes to omit VA credits for characters they don't want to mention- and it's notable that Yearling's VA just happens to be the uncredited one for Daring Do in the original episode, so if you don't dig, it sneaks right by...even though we know Daring Do having voice parts in this one is inevitable considering the episode. Especially considering "Yearling" is bracketed by both Daring's old nemesis and a new one (Dr. Caballeron) in the listing.

In other words, the pic is actually Rainbow Dash fangasming over talking to the author...who really is Daring Do. (And I'd be amused as heck if Twilight Velvet's her ghost writer.)

If you didn't get the pun, Pinkie was also the "ringer" for the real Pony of Shadows.

AJ/RD is a straight callback to the old competitive pairup from the Running of the Leaves and suchlike, and the episode's a new writer that did his homework. I actually liked it, though the overlooked part for most people was Spike/Angel's little go-rounds. Using the castle to split characters up let them play two characters off each other for most of the episode, and that was a nice bit of work.

We'll also be in the castle again for #406 at least- the diary room is the same one as the room in the previews where they're getting sucked into the book- in fact, it might very well be the diary with some kind of prank trap that was meant for Luna if she snooped.

Good episode, I felt the dialogue was quite natural, actually noticeably so (I'm the kind of person who overanalyzes dialogue choices). Pinkie's "my imagination runs away with me, but it always comes back with CAKE" line was tops for me as far as humor, but the characters playing off each other the entire episode was great imo. I didn't mind RD/AJ at all, but RD is kind of my favorite pony so she doesn't grate on me like she does on others.

So far S4 is shaping up to be a loooootttt better than S3. Guess we'll see just how much better!
