Start off with vectors, IMHO they're much easier to handle than pixel art.
Ponyscape is a pretty good program for that, spin-off of Inkscape that has some neat additions and fun stuff like colour palettes for ponies ^^

Why was season 3 only 13 episodes?

My guess? They were writing this and that abomination known as Equestria Girls at the same time.

@Niya: I was thinking traditional hand drawing. I've done simple vectors before so I can't really see scanning an image and making a vector of it being TOO hard.

Yup, I think that was the official reason. They put ~half of the budget for S3 in EqG instead, thus only 13 episodes.

I've heard it was because they figured it and transformers could survive with fewer episodes for a season, so they cut back on them and hasbro put more cash into some of their other series(my little pet shop and the like). Only problem was Hasbro didn't tell anyone why they were doing that so people though the shows were going to be cut.

Is EqG worth watching, says it takes place after the end of season 3?

I'd say hell no. To me it felt like a god awful rehash of the S1 premiere without anything that made it good.

And yeah it takes place between S3/S4, but the writers said the movie won't affect FiM at all.
