Today's ep. Pretty much a snoozefest IMO.



Is it just me or are they really trying to make AJ less likeable?

It was a new writer but yea storyline wasn't that great someone else probably had to of came up with it when they do their writers meeting. The guy wrote Applejack really out of character, she has never been super over protective of her sister. Applejack+Applebloom can't really hold up a whole episode by themselves. Most of the best episodes have the whole main cast in them. Guess its harder to come up with new storylines when your in the 4th season, but there were a lot of pretty good episodes in the first half.

Hoping the ending will be better and the season finale.

Yeah, S4 started off pretty good, but it's losing steam fast. I can only imagine how bad it's going to be if they're serious about keeping FiM alive for 5 more years. You can only do so much with a small cast of static characters before the show turns into complete garbage.

Not true. It can stay interesting for years with the cast it's got, it's just too limited by the content it's allowed to use. As long as you have to stay as family-friendly and PC as MLP does, there's a lot more limitations in place. It rules out too much of the supernatural, anything religious, most disabilities, adult exercises (sex drugs rock 'n roll). Then you've got the technology limitations imposed by the quasi-medieval world - no cell phones, computers or any technogadgets that kids relate to nowadays. There's so much ruled out because it's essentially a vehicle to sell toys to kids that any potential the series has to keep adults interested with unique, introspective stories is out the window after so long.

But adults were never its intended audience anyway and Hasbro still isn't capitalizing on the huge adult fanbase the show has, so they obviously don't give two shits about expanding into new markets and trying to make the show appeal to both kids and adults. As long as it makes the children want the shiny pony toy at the store, their job is done.

It seems like they're working towards season long story arcs with tons of filler. Season 1 had a primary interest in the show's intended demographic with a emphasis on character development. Season 2 was more about world building and establishing lore. Season 3 might as well not have happened really. Season 4's main issue is that all the character development that could have complemented the new format was fully explored in the first two seasons.

We know Applejack is honest to a fault, Twilight is book smart with little common sense, Rainbow Dash will go through another conflict where she ends up choosing her friends over what she really wants, Fluttershy is too nice, Rarity is a jerk with a heart of gold, Spike is greedy, and Pinkie Pie is...well, Pinkie Pie. It's like they're trying to recreate season 1 again, but there's so many of these types of stories you can really do to fill in until whatever epic event is going to take place for the finale.

If anything, we need more appearances from all those great characters from the first three season, some more background on the supporting cast we barely know anything about, and maybe even more memorable characters that don't just show up from one episode and fuck off for two seasons. (Trixie) Hell, bring Trixie back and make her a semi-permanent anti-villainess for a while instead of trying to rehash what's already been done. Just imagine a string of episodes where she tries to be nice, but fails miserably in comical fashion. It'd be a bit better than what's amounting to slice of life fanfics done by new/inexperienced writers.

Or maybe we just had a few bad filler episodes back to back. It could be much worse, like Flash Sentry getting more screentime while the events of Equestrian Girls becoming canon.

Well some people believe there was a subtle reference in the show. But yeah, I'm surprised not even South Park tried to make an episode. For some reason I could see Randy being a batshit crazy brony and go way over the top.

Wasn't there a rumor that a South Park episode was in the works? I'm pretty sure Trey and Matt would've been all over MLP by now. Like you mentioned, Randy would be all in while embarrassing the hell out of Stan, Butters would probably be cool out of irony because all the kids at school (except Stan) were into it and Cartman would call them all fags or something but secretly watch the show too. The episode practically writes itself.

Maybe. One theory is they won't touch it the same reason why Cyanide and Happiness won't. They fear they'd piss off the fandom and have a massive nerd rage on their asses. But at the same time Trey/Matt never seemed like the kind to hold back.

After jabbing Scientology twice, making fun of a fanbase of man children centered around technicolor ponies with tattoos on their asses, preaching love and tolerance would seem like a walk in the park.

As much as I question why Maud came out of nowhere and they couldn't use another sister, it was a pretty good episode. Maud is OP as hell.

They retconned Maud in Pinkie Pride for whatever reason. But I liked this episode, Maud was pretty funny, lot better then some of the more recent ones.

It's been a really good season for secondary characters- from the "merely" well-written like Trenderhoof up through Coco, Cheese Sandwich and Maud. It's world-building, and you gotta like that. Comic's hitting it's stride too- Friends Forever #2-#3 were miles better than #1 and we get another Cook/Price arc with the whole mirror bit.
