Pretty bad. The baby/surprise lines felt forced and overused.

GM Berrow wasn't exactly a great bookwriter, and it didn't improve moving up to writing an episode.

Edit: Although for once, Pinkie was decently on target. Shining getting a kid's room was an interesting way of showing how he geeked out as a kid.

I never read anything by Berrow so I can't comment.

And yeah, the Shining moment was interesting. My friend and me used to joke about Shining being a failure, and now we call him a manchild.

Also, in retrospect Pinkie was so wound up on the "keeping the surprise a surprise" that she utterly misses all the people trying to help- Mayor Mare, Featherweight, etc. They're already in on the surprise, and if Pinkie had been thinking, it'd have given her someone to bleed off some of the pressure talking with, if only sideways.

You can see Mayor Mare's definitely in the same boat during the scavenger hunt, doing what I'd otherwise think is the "I gotta pee!" dance as she desperately tries to hold back the whole "OMG ROYAL BABY!" bit.

Kinda surprising since I can't see how any character, let alone actual person, could like Shining.

Shining's alright but has less real character development than Big Mac at this point. Flash is still shit.

I really don't see anything in him. He's the captain of the royal guards and well... they seem worthless. I still say if it wasn't for Luna/Celestia Equestria would be conquered within 24 hours.

Luna and Celestia haven't really done anything more than the Royal Guards. The most useful thing they've done in countering present day threats is giving Twilight their power in Twilight's Kingdom, and exposition. Shining's shield was a bigger obstacle to Chrysalis than Celestia was.

However, that's irrelevant to people liking them, since your win rate isn't correlated to your likability.

Fair enough, but still Shining's character doesn't scream captain in any sense of the word. He seems more like a spaz than anything else.

So because of a single scene, he's a spaz, despite all the scenes of him ordering soldiers around, attacking villains (it's not his fault major Equestria villains are not something normal ponies can deal with without ancient artifacts), supporting his wife, being a good big brother, and more?

If you can't let your guard down around your little sister, where can you?

No I mean since his introduction he seems like one. Though I suppose it doesn't help he has the personality of a puddle of water.

This is literally the first time he's ever acted like a spaz.

He's protective of his sister, usually serious, very dutiful, loving and protective towards his wife, and is a bit of a nerd underneath. That's a significant personality for a minor character.

    Today's episode~

    Spoiler: show
Great, Big Mac is sailing his 3rd ship already... FlutterMac, CheeriMac, and now MarbleMac xD (and as usual, the ships sail extra-fast~)

I enjoy seeing episodes that fill in some of the gaps.

First off, Pinkie's parents are the first modern-era ponies other than Luna herself to use the archaic forms of Equestrian speech.

Granny Smith channeled Rarity with that whole "looking for love" bit. (Not surprising, same VA)

Limestone has a cutie mark that goes well with margaritas. Berry Punch has competition.

The Apples, with the exception of silly AJ are really, really good at getting along with other farmfolk. Pie family visits for Hearth's Warming in Ponyville next season, please?

Nice little touches: Boulder getting his own bowl of soup.

It wasn't an episode that had huge events to fall back on to make a mark, but it was straightforward and worldbuilding- even if it'll probably be most remembered for the inevitable MacMarble shipping.

Edit note: Also Steve Martin/John Candy ponies snuck in on the train.

    Newest episode~

    Spoiler: show
Felt a bit like "Lesson 0.5"... Discord trying to teach Twilight stuff, kinda weird, but also kind of a logical step since Celestia and Luna seem to be/are done with their stuff for now.
And oh the references... Discord Ross, Pinkie McFly...
And, for the 2nd time already, Starlight Glimmer stalking Twilight... A hint for the finale maybe?

Episode wasn't awful, but felt lacking. I can't put my finger on it but Discord felt "off" in this one. Also seems weird he's a complete asshole to Twilight to teach her something.

It's really a Q/Picard style thing. Discord can't help being...well, discordant, but he's at least making it focus on one pony vs. universal fuckery.

Also, the entire episode gets another pun name, in this case it's "What about Bob". (Discord's fisherman outfit with the jar-o-Smooze at the end mirrors the one with a goldfish-in-a-jar from the same movie.)

Maybe that was it since I have never seen anything Star Trek related.

Only thing I really remember about the ep was the fact people bitched at the writer over Twitter.
