And the size difference, just a guess: thanks to the elements of harmony, NM got "reverted back" to Luna, but since she was "stuck" to being NM for a century Luna's body didn't age/grow during that time.
But another thing i thought about: why the hay are Celestia and Luna just princesses? No queens or kings were ever mentioned, so it would only be normal for at least one of them to move up to queen state. Or can it really be that it's just because of the general believe that all little girls like pink (toy Celestia... <.<) and want to be a princess?
@Silenka: nice find ^^ might be one of those references to old films/series someone mentioned. Not that i recognized any so far, maybe i'm just too young xD
