If you want to make good use of your OC, write a fanfic and most important of all: take the mary sue test! There are some rare cases in which a mary sue would be acceptable, like a one scene wonder or if they're a large ham. But those are usually plaid for laughs or a big lipped alligator moment and shouldn't be taken seriously. OCs are a bit different in that they could be used as a filler for a story, (like the CMC fic I linked earlier) add a different perspective to a story through their eyes, become a heroic bystander, or even be the lead in their own story. (look at how well Fallout: Equestria is doing with that) The whole process is kind of hit or miss depending on how much thought you put into the basic do's and don't of an OC. If you want a prime example, read some of the comments about Lightning Blaze or whatever the hell that thing was supposed to be that out flew a sonic rainboom.
Yeah, I read a lot of those comments. Talk about a white-knight/troll shitstorm. As for when I'd even consider it, mostly if it was something involving nothing but OCs/different town then I'd consider it justified.

Speaking of OCs, why the hell is Cteno so popular for being one of the weirdest OCs ever to happen? She looks like the offspring of a pony and a typical h-tentacle monster.

Yea, that's usually the general portrayal of OC characters in good fanfics. But some people take it to the extreme and they wind up being author avatars.

That's a good question, I've even started to like Cteno, but have no idea why. Maybe it's because of Slugbox's awesome artwork and her appearances in popular blogs. Ask Surprise is a good one where there's a running gag that Surprise keeps mutilating her unintentionally. (freezing, melting with a flamethrower, making her wings that collapse causing her to fall to her doom.. etc)

But if there's any OC's that deserve to be the leads in their own story, it needs to be these guys:

For some inexplicable reason I imagine that as an intro to a spin-off show about misadventures of two Celestia's agents, who are trying to catch Derpy and change her, but she manages to get away through some crazy and derpy means every time, leaving them in akward, painful and embarassing situations. Well, you know, like a mix of that goofy cartoon about Coyote trying to catch Road Runner and the Zeta Project series.
Someone needs to make that happen.

Ok, I need to read that after the captain falcon one.
Also, College humor video was funny. Laughed at the "Anywhere but next to the fleshlight".

This could by far be one of the best Doctor Whooves fanfics I've ever read, and it's not even finished:

Wake up, clean the TARDIS, have some tea, get chased by Daleks, have more tea, lose the Vortex, make muffins, find the Vortex, eat muffins and tea, blow up the planet. It's just another day for the Whooves family!

...Oh, and Carrot Top has NO idea what's going on. Just saying.

Wasn't a fan of the College Humor vid. Was pretty predictable from the start.

    anyone see this?

    http://www.cartoonbrew.com/tv/the-hu...are-dudes.html

Next month, The Hub network will debut another revival of a 1980s toy commercial, Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot. Their earlier series, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, sparked an unlikely following among adult males, otherwise known as the Brony phenomenon, but one fandom isn’t enough for the Hub. They think their Care Bears show needs an adult male fanbase, too, and they’re shamelessly encouraging it themselves. Their PR firm sent us the following press release, which besides not understanding the distinction between drawn and CG animation, suggests names for potential male Care Bear fans:
Hey Amid- What’s the Care Bears equivalent of a Brony? Belly-Bros? Care-Dudes? “Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot” premieres this June on The Hub TV Network and features the same re-imagined CG animation and spirit of friendship and caring that made shows like “My Little Pony Friendship is Magic” a cult hit. “Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot” is a modernized, CGI-animated version of the classic animated cartoon, which hits its 30th anniversary this year! Re-imagined in the same vein as the Hub’s other hit television shows, everyone’s favorite bears and their iconic Belly Badges have been transformed with today’s technology into a series that kids and families can enjoy together. I’d love to see if you’d be interested in featuring the bears for the series launch this June. I have art and clips available and can also do email interviews with Executive Producer Sarah Finn, our director and voice talent. Let me know if this interests you and I can send over some more details! Thanks!

This is likely the last time I’ll be mentioning Care Bears on Cartoon Brew’s homepage, but here’s a parting gift—the show’s teaser:

Imagine if Faust worked on the Care Bears. Would it have been as popular as MLP?

Carebear cartoon looks like it was tailor made for retarded little kids <10 .

MLP may be aimed squarely at little girls but it doesn't treat the audience like retarded 6 year old's that need kisses blown to them every 5 seconds.

I was thinking the same thing after finally watching the trailer. Looks like the same animators and crew from Strawberry Shortcake and Transformers Prime. Not expecting this to have the same impact as MLP. I remember they used to play Carebears tapes non stop when I was in daycare and I never got into it back then.

But since I've been on an alternate reality fanfic binge recently I can't help but wonder what could have been. Imagine an alternate universe where Lauren Faust was sent to work on Carebears instead of MLP and it gained the same popularity.
