Steelers' Willie Colon placed on IR

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Willie Colon was placed on injured reserve Tuesday and offensive tackle Jamon Meredith was signed, the team announced.

Meredith started four games for the Buffalo Bills in 2009. He was drafted in the fifth round that year by the Packers. Last season he spent time with the Bills, Lions and Giants and appeared in five games.

Colon was scheduled to have surgery Tuesday on a torn triceps muscle, his agent told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Monday.

Colon's agent, Joe Linta, told the paper that the injury happened toward the end of the Steelers' 35-7 loss to rival Baltimore.

"Willie is obviously devastated," Joe Linta told the Post-Gazette. "But he vows to be back and give the Steelers more good years."

The team re-signed Colon to a five-year, $29 million deal over the summer.

According to the team's official website, the Steelers list rookie Marcus Gilbert and 2010 fifth-round pick Chris Scott behind Colon on their depth chart. Gilbert was selected with the 63rd overall pick in April's draft.

Before missing all of 2010 with a torn Achilles, Colon had started every game for three straight years. He was originally a fourth-round pick in 2006 out of Hofstra.

San Diego Chargers Kicking Situation

The San Diego Chargers signed kicker Nick Novak to a two-year contract on Tuesday and placed Nate Kaeding on season-ending injured reserve, the team announced.

Novak beat out Shayne Graham and Dave Rayner for the kicking job after having the best workout Tuesday, a source told ESPN.com's John Clayton.

In 2010, Novak was in training camp with the Chargers. He spent training camp with the New York Jets before this season.

Kaeding suffered torn ligaments in his knee in the Chargers' season-opening victory over the Vikings.

Kaeding was hurt trying to tackle Minnesota's Percy Harvin, who returned the opening kickoff 103 yards for a touchdown on Sunday.

"He planted and he kind of got spread out," coach Norv Turner said Monday. "There was no contact on the play."

Kaeding came into the season having made 86.5 percent of his field goal attempts, 173 of 200, in the previous seven seasons.

The team also announced that it has signed defensive end Ogemdi Nwagbuo and released safety C.J. Wallace.

Browns Punter Placed on IR

CLEVELAND -- Browns punter Richmond McGee injured his back during warm-ups before Sunday's season opener, a possible explanation for his horrendous NFL debut.

Agent David Canter said McGee suffered a herniated disk before Cleveland hosted Cincinnati, and that the injury was so bad that McGee was kicking without feeling in his legs. McGee averaged just 36 yards on eight punts, shanking his first one 20 yards and later following it with punts of 28 and 30 yards.

Canter said the Browns plan to place McGee on injured reserve later Tuesday.

"He's extremely disappointed, but grateful he got the opportunity," Canter said of McGee, who was signed after Reggie Hodges went down with a season-ending injury.

There are reports the Browns have signed veteran Brad Maynard, a 14-year veteran who spent the past 10 years with the Chicago Bears. He punted for Houston during the preseason but was waived by the Texans on Sept. 3.

A Browns spokesman said the team has no roster moves to report at this time.

Maynard's agent, Chad Wiestling, did not immediately return messages.

Canter said McGee "felt a twinge" while he was warming up on the field Sunday but decided to play.

"He told me it got to the point during the game where he couldn't even feel his legs," Canter said. "I knew something was wrong, either he was hurt or he had forgotten how to kick. I felt bad for him because the fans were on him badly, so I called him after the game and he told me what happened."

Canter said McGee does not need surgery.

The Browns have been in a bind at punter since losing Hodges, who tore his Achilles in training camp on Aug. 2. Hodges was one of the AFC's top punters last season.

Maynard could bring them experience as a punter and holder for Phil Dawson on extra points and field goals.

The 37-year-old has kicked for the New York Giants and Bears, who released him on July 25. Maynard has averaged 41.9 yards per punt in his career. However his 40.1-yard average on 83 punts last season ranked him 32nd in the league, and his net average of 35.2 was 29th overall.

Browns first-year special teams coach Chris Tabor spent the past three seasons with Maynard in Chicago.
