I'd argue that this is the first year they didn't go with the win-now mentality. They had a "boring" draft, didn't sign any big name free agents. They look like they are trying to build. Grossman is a suitable enough QB and the draft next year will have 4-5 good QBs they can be patient and draft one and bring them up. Also, expect Beck to move into the starter role soon. I view both of them as cheap ways to hold down the QB position while they spend money on the rest of the team. The franchise was such a mess, it will take years to get things back in order. Like those people on Hoarders. They managed to throw out the rotting refrigerators and flattened dead cat carcasses...but they still have a lot of work to do. (That rotting refrigerator line was a jab at Haynesworth. Sorry.)

The local media and the fans (that aren't homers) literally said they have a free pass to be as shitty as they want for the next couple years, but make the necessary changes. But it looks like Shanahan and son are looking for that one flash in the pan situation. I want a goddamn dynasty in the making

The thing that dissapoints me the most is that I think the niners are just good enough to NOT be the worst team (Seattle looks like they are going to earn that this year) and therefore not get Luck.

They had several occasions to give up some key players for a full rebuild. Tennessee at one point offered up Britt with a late 2nd and late 3rd pick, Cooley had great trade value, Moss, Hall, Thomas, Smoot, Betts, Kelly, McIntosh, and even Rogers could have been used to pillage some picks from teams like the Browns and Raiders. But instead they kept Haynesworth around as a distraction and cut Thomas, Smoot, Kelly, and gave Raubach a bigger paycheck, picked up McNabb as another goat for the year.
