I was in US History when the first hit, and inbetween classes when the second one hit. I have an uncle that worked in one of them, so i bolted to use the phone in school to make a long distance call, turns out he was late due to stopping to get donuts because he lost a bet. We sat for the rest of history and watched it, then i took my ass home. My parental unit picked me up a copy of the NY times of the day, which i still have sealed up.
Learned about it in the car coming back from school; then stayed glued to the TV for the next few hours, frantically swapping channels (british, french, belgian, german, dutch, whatever) to see who had a new bit of info.
I was quite shocked when the second plane hit: usually, when you witness major dramatic events on the TV, it's recorded images and that somehow lessens the emotional impact, but it wasn't the case then... that plane just appeared behind the journalist and hit the tower full-on.
Was 17 at the time.
I was in Week 5 of Basic Training. I had just rotated off of the firing line on an M16 range to relieve some of the other trainees at the ammunition shed so that they could fire; when I got down there, the first tower collapsed. We were under strict orders not to tell anyone else until the drill sergeants had accounted for all ammunition and weapons from the trainees. Even after the company First Sergeant announced what had happened, we weren't allowed to watch any TV, listen to any radio, or read any magazines (as is the norm during Basic). My only real look at what happened was a glimpse of the TV in the overnight Charge of Quarters office that I managed to see as I made a personnel report to the on-duty Drill Sergeant.
The training staff made us all call home to tell our families we (as in the basic training company) weren't being shipped off to war. A lot of kids had enlisted for the college money or other benefits, and got pretty nervous about finding themselves in a wartime Army.
I remember the suicide watch kids (all the ones that "CAN'T HANDLE IT ANYMORE!") wanting to be allowed back into training, and the Senior Drill Sergeant told them no; but if they were serious, they would have to do all that they could to ensure the rest of us graduated, then the SRS would recycle them to a Week Zero basic training company. Those kids had to sit in the back of the auditorium to watch us all graduate, lol.
We had quite a few people from New York in my company, and they let most of them go home.
Was in the navy. My ship was in drydock in portsmouth, va. We were just about to muster when the captain called everyone inside the skin of the ship to tell us. After the plane that hit the pentagon we went on lockdown for all most a week with no outside contact.
That was the scary part. Not being able to find out if my family and friends were ok
k, you remember when Bin Laden was killed and everyone poured into the streets and celebrated because they thought justice was served to someone/an organization that was responsible for killings of thousands of civilians, etc.? Well the clips you're talking about were selectively taken by news organizations of IGNORANT, UNEDUCATED groups of people who thought in the exact same manner. They had lost family members at the hands of actions of US government and thought that what had happened was justice and were celebrating, and because they were ignorant and uneducated, didn't even realize that the attack had nothing to do with dealing a blow to US government and was just a slaughter of civilians.
You can't honestly believe that those people represented any meaningful demographic of Muslims.
edit: wow adding in quote to what I was refering to.
I was a freshman or sophomore in high school, all these posters saying they were in 6th grade and shit makes me feel old wtf ok.
^ yeah same here wtf.

Sophomore in HS, Computer Graphics class. They wouldn't let us out of class the rest of that day and wouldn't tell any of us why or what was going on. Somewhere through the grapevine we finally found out about the towers, but no one knew it was terrorists.
I was in my 4th year of college (you young fucks).
Had moved into an apartment with two friends and didn't have class that day so we had an appointment to get our cable set up and I was at home. When the cable guy came in he was like "did you hear the news? I bet you didn't since you don't have TV", he hooked me up real fast and turned to the news (giving me a brief summary of what happened). The two of us just sat there for like 30 minutes watching the towers (the second plane had just hit maybe 20 minutes-ish beforehand). Was pretty surreal.
I'm fortunate that I didn't lose someone, though I have a friend who lost his fiance.I was working on a college play at the time and our director was in NY when it happened. He was pretty shaken when he got back, I guess he was on a subway at the time and the operators must have gotten some kind of emergency call or something because they told people to hold onto something tight and went like super sonic to get away from where the buildings were at.
I was a sophomore in college...much less HS. /sigh
I'd skipped class to go eat breakfast. Smoked a joint on the way home. Came in and my dad started explaining that a plane hit the WTC. Right as he was talking the second one hit.
There was that definite blank sense of shock for both of us for about a full minute. Was an insta-buzzkill on a whole new level.
What is your point? I posted saying I don't think all Muslims are terrorists. I'm jaded in the fact that people who claim to value life so much as a part of their religion, celebrated the death of thousands of people. Are you trying to tell me these people who tend to be very religious don't even understand their religion? Unless I'm wrong, Islam has placed an infinite value on human life. This is expressed in the Qur'an in the following terms: We ordained for the children of Israel that if anyone slew a person, unless it be for murder or for spreading mischief in the land, it would be as if he slew the whole of mankind. And if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of a whole people. (al-Ma’ida, 5:32)
No, my point was that the people you saw were either 1. terrorists or 2. were so ignorant/uneducated/influenced by propaganda that they had no idea WTF they were celebrating. I was trying to say you should be pissed at news organizations for selectively taking those tapes and viewing them over and over like they represented a whole group of people. Life is too short to spend it being jaded at a certain group of people.
this thread makes me feel old, why was everyone so young in 2001
I remember waking up late for school, had my mom drive me to school, remember something playing on the Radio about the first plane. Got into class just as the second one hit and the teachers had radios/TVs going so we all could watch/listen. I was i the 7th grade at the time and didn't think much of it.
Holy shit man, all I'm trying to say is NORMAL Muslims are just as normal as you and I. You think news of exactly what happend was reaching the villages of Afghanistan (where those tapes were made) about how planes killed like 2000 civilians? Or do you think a representative of the Taliban pulled up and said "EVERYONE BE HAPPY WE DESTROYED A BIG IMPORTANT MILITARY BUILDING OF AMERICA AND YOUR FAMILIES ARE AVENGED"
