Notary Process - Recovering a spellcheck

I recently went to play FFXI again after a two year break. I could not find my POL ID, password, registration codes, nothing...so I called SE and gave them my original CC #. They gave me a POL ID from 2007 that was never used by me, I think it was from when I upgraded from PS2 version to PC, so there were no characters on it. I told them to look for more and low an behold a POL ID attached to my CC# was linked to a SE ID that did not belong to me. My account had been compromised!!

I was emailed a Notary form and told to fill it out , I never got the email. So I called back SE a few hours later and said "Hey, I never got the notary, send it again but gave them a different email address. The first on was a gmail account and the second one that finally worked was a Comcast.net address. Great, I now have my form this was on August 19th, I quickly filled it out got it notarized and included a copy of my Driver's License. Ran down to the post office before it closed and sent it off Certified Mail.

Well on August 22nd the form showed as delivered. So I gave them a few more days to process it, I called them Wednesday the 24th and they had my form. "Yea, I said, I'll have my account back in no time now." Well they said they had my form but it was not processed yet. OK I thought to myself, it's a basic one page form how long can it take to process.

I called back a week later, no email yet, and the guy on the phone says we are still processing your notary. I said what? It's one page how long does it take to process. He said call back in a week and we should have it ready.

Long story short here we are September 6th and I still don't have my account back, they have been processing my notary form for about three weeks now. This is ridiculous, I keep camping my email box for that elusive email saying we verified who you are call us to get your account back. I'm starting to lose my FFXI itch now, this is depressing the customer service is so pitiful. I almost want to say Fvck it and start over from scratch, but I think I'll give it a few more days.

Does anyone have recent experience trying to recover a compromised account? If so how long did it take to get it back? I'm looking for something encouraging to make me believe that I'll be getting that email in a few day to tell me call us we got it.

I submitted a claim around Christmas 2009 and had my account back on 1/20/2010, so 3-4 weeks.

But yeah, what you're describing is absolutely par for the course with SE. You also picked kind of a bad time to come back (they're between two account management systems), so it may take even longer than what people are describing.

Realistically, you'll need to wait around 4 weeks (that's how long a few people I know had to wait). Also, this thread probably doesn't classify as 'advanced'.

Once your account is hacked, if it doesn't have a token on it, it will definitely get hacked multiple times, even if you call them to lock it.

What the RMT do is write down your personal info from when they hacked the account, and then the RMT just unlock it themselves by calling, if you lock it. SE is pretty lenient with unlocking accounts as long as there is a working credit card attached to to them.

Mine got to the point where the RMT put another credit card on mine, because I had called and finally took my credit card off (I got hacked three times) and got the notary form in just so no one could use my account until tokens were available.

Once tokens were available it took me about 6 weeks of badgering SE until I could get my account activated again, as it was banned because of the activities the RMT were doing on it. I recommend to call them, don't use their online chat feature as they can just copy paste crap. There's this dude named Nehemiah who literally just pastes the same thing no matter what question you ask, and then logs off, The phone support is better. If you talk to them in person they won't just hang up on you and it forces them to actually sorta answer your question.

Just keep calling every few days because they will need new information all the time during the recovery process but they won't actually contact you for it, They're pretty much worthless you have to basically do their job for them unfortunately.

Now all of this is based around not having a token attached during the recovery process, I'm not sure what kind of hurdles their token that might add for you, but whatever you do, I wouldn't ever log on it without your own token once you get it back.

Ever since I've got the token I've had no problems, fortunately all the stuff I had on my character was worthless by the time I started playing again anyway so no huge loss. Main thing that's great about getting your character back is stuff like outpost warps and mission completion. Those are serious time sinks, they're pretty easy but they still take a lot of time and running around, it's worth the time you spend getting it back I think.
