Second, is $100 the amount they're supposed to have you sign for, or is it all products in theory? Seems anytime you could claim you didn't receive the product and either the delivery company or the shipper would have to fix it. If you claimed you never received it (legitimately or not), is there any way they can hold you responsible?
From when I worked there they (the drivers not the guys in charge) told me it was around 100$ for a signature. Not sure though on the exact amount. I do know I watched the driver I was assigned with forge people's names left and right, but then again we also delivered to rural areas and hid the packages so people couldnt see from the street. But that driver was also the one who said "Yeah im fucked if they find out I forged this signature, but they don't give me time for getting it".

Now that was during Christmas time, and UPS is rushed to the fucking max, so I wouldn't take advantage of them (the drivers) around that time, as UPS only gives them a certain amount of time to deliver more and more packages, but around summer they STILL pull the same shit and there's hardly any rush for deliveries.

How about them dropping it off with a fucking neighbor? laptop was sent to my house, come home to a note that says "Left with neighbor" wtf? what if I dont get along with the guy? And that is the case with one of them, thank god it was dropped off with the neighbor I get along with.

I call them to find out who it was dropped off with at first, mostly because it looked like a 35 and it turned out to be a 37. And the person on the phone had no record of item even. Was so close to flipping out.

When getting stuff shipped to you is there any kind of checklist of stuff for dropoff protocol you can specify?

Leave with [house #] neighbor y/n
    Leave behind fence y/n
If I'm not there just leave it at the warehouse and I'll pick it up y/n
    etc.

So is this stuff only happening in rural areas or urban areas as well? I live in an apartment at chicago and regardless of amount they do not deliver it unless they are able to get into the hallway(which is locked) to drop off the package. In peoria as well ( a less urban area) they have a key to my apartment complex as it is owned by the school and drop it off in front of your apartment door regardless of amount without signature. I've never seen these stories of people just leaving shit outside.

When I was an undergrad in Austin, they did this all the time. We lived in student apartments that weren't in the best part of town (and surrounded by other college students who were morally ambiguous) so fairly sure they weren't evaluating the area. Wasn't exactly hard to get into the property either -- just needed a gate code when the gate was actually working.. The annoying thing was that there was a front office they could leave packages at (and sometimes did), but sometimes they just left things at the door.

The condo I live at now (admittedly in a much smaller city) they just leave things at the door. It's not in a bad part of town or anything and you can't get into the building without the password, but it's still annoying to come home and find a big package just sitting in the hallway (like the sound system that came in yesterday..).

Had a $250 box on my door step 2 days ago, a 100$ box there yesterday. Certain things, larger things, I'll get a slip stuck to my door if I missed him. Value doesn't seem to be a concern. I have to sign for monitors, and large computer part orders... but my 300$ headphones? Nope.

I was a block off the main road going through the largest city in the state. It's as urban as Alaska gets.

Dunno but the last $5 bluray I had delivered they made me spend $10 in gas to get..... I almost felt like telling them to keep it and reorder it from amazon again for $5... but I figured they would have kept the other one and made me drive there to get 2 blurays But no, my $500 computer parts, laptop, and anything else you don't want to get rained on they leave on the porch.... generally as far away from the door as they can get, just in case it does start to rain.

    (ALWAYS UPS)

Fedex is generally pretty good about it.... UPS is a 1 and out service.... come and get it yourself as far as they have been with me. Even for items that don't need to be signed for they don't seem to want to deliver them. Had a nice talk with amazon who said that UPS is being retarded and there is nothing they can do about it.

UPS has always been better for me, with the exception on signing. They make me sign for enough things, but there are others I should be signing for as well. Although that would be an inconvenience and I'd never see my items, but it's just the point of it. UPS dominates other delivery services as far as reliability for me though. Packages seem to be well taken care of, they ship faster, and my UPS dude is always at my house between 11 and 1130, never before or after. He stops at my house probably 2+ times a week, always punctual.

For those who aren't aware, the value of packages are not disclosed to the shipping company. FedEx/UPS do not decide when to get a signature. The shipper has to tell FedEx/UPS that they require a signature to deliver the package. If a package does not require a signature, it is up to the driver. Most will leave the package at the door because it is easier (for the driver and, in many cases, the receiver). All of the drivers I've known try to keep it out of sight, if possible (which is probably why that monitor was put in the bush) and if the package is large, they won't leave it without getting a signature (even if a signature wasn't required). If you live in a shitty neighborhood or somewhere the driver has had packages stolen from before, chances are he'll take it back to the hub and leave a note on the door.

If you're ordering something online, check to see if there's an option for requiring a signature on delivery. Many websites will automatically do this for large packages/packages over a certain dollar amount, but it isn't guaranteed. I know that newegg was testing a system where you could request a signature on any delivery. After you place an order, there's not much you can do, though. You can contact the (shipping) company with your tracking code and request that the package be held at a hub for pick-up, but sometimes the shipper will put a no-hold on the item to prevent fraud. It sucks, but I don't know of a better way to do it.

This is really something that every shipper needs to start asking their customers when an order is placed. Some people don't want to drive to the hub to pick up a package if it is delivered while they're not home and others don't want their expensive things left outside without someone being there. If you are getting expensive computer equipment left outside, make sure that the shipper is requesting a signature (that won't help with rain, though; there's no policy that says don't leave packages in the weather).

And I know this is probably pointless, but please don't report packages that you received as stolen. Not only is it a dick move, but it can cost someone their job. The driver didn't make the policies and if you don't agree with them, getting a driver fired isn't going to fix them. If you know a package should require a signature and it gets forged, call the company and report them. Give them the package information and date of delivery (most routes are driven by the same person everyday, but it is better to be sure).

We had some people on our route with special instructions so there is a way, but I think you need to talk to the driver and you can't set it up through UPS. It's just something you say to the driver and get in good with him and be like "Hey buddy, if im not here you mind not leaving it on the porch and just tossing it on the side of the garage?" and usually they will do that. Though if a new driver picks up your route then you gotta do it all over again

TVs and monitors and shit ALWAYS required us to get a signature I remember, it was part of their procedure I think, since the boxes are easy to identify...doesn't mean my driver didn't just drop them off on some porches each day we worked because if you go back to the Warehouse with a ton of shit still on the van the company comes down on you hard.
