Hello fellows from/used to be at Bismarck.
Combination of all(or most) of the above. I picked up WoW in DEC '09 on a random boring night, and never really turned back. XI had grown really stale by then, and I had just gotten a new position at work, which required a lot more of my time. WoW was easier to pick up and put down on a whim, and it didn't eat up my life like XI. I found myself waiting around, doing nothing, HOPING something would happen a lot more often in XI than WoW.
It's a shame really, because the XI community is (or was) a hell of a lot better than anything I've found in WoW. I had to choose between consistently doing nothing with people I liked, and consistently accomplishing a lot with people I can tolerate. I've tried making a comeback 3 times now, and the lack of content really kills it for me. If I could stick around for free, just for the community, I would.
My forced quit may be ending, as SE seems to be extending an effort to fix the problem by allowing a region change. They're attempting a cross-region relink of my JP POL ID to my NA SE Account.
Just sorta...lost interest a few years back, though I'm gonna check it out soon just to see the changes, and the cap beyond 75.
I quit following Abyssea and the level cap raise. The game just wasn't the same.
add "I made a relic after owning an empyeran to the list"? lol
I just cancelled my subscription for a few reasons, the main one not to do with the game is that the game is a terrible procrastination when I should be working in the last 2 months of my degree. That, and for the last week I have non-stop been writing about MMORPGs and the science behind it, and it's incredibly immoral and unethical (I think, anyway).
There's nothing to do in the game anymore. Nothing. Voidwatch is depressing. Dynamis is has returned to being a bore after the revamp of it wore off (that and the 11 jobs I have leveled got fuck all in the AF2+2 department), it's the same shit, just worse now with other people. And that's it. That's End-game for you at 99. There isn't so many people playing now that to clear battlefields by requiring 18+ people (WoE, Legion) happens regularly, if at all, after the event has been released.
And lately, the frustration over the fact that they are spending so much time and effort into job balancing, which has 0 to do with gamePLAY, when that effort should be put into bring events and content out sooner. They should just bring out all the revamps to Salvage, Nyzul, Einherjar, Limbus, and whatever else they are planning as soon as possible, and THEN refine the jobs. That way people got shit to do whilst they fuck around shouting "barance".
Not to mention the test server, SE's answer to getting the playerbase to pay SE to try new stuff a few weeks before going live, the playerbase telling them what's wrong, and they ignore it. Why can't they put all this shit in monthly updates so that the game is continuously updated in small chunks through the year? All that was in the last update was Voidwatch Part 3, which contained 11 NMs, oh, and getting Lv99, which lets face it, wasnt hard. And VW was full of sidegrades. And eventhough I have 3 Emps with 0 desire to go beyond Lv90, the poorly designed implimentation of HMPs (none in VWp3) makes me think why should a game give me reasons NOT to go after stuff. That seems counter-intuitive.
Urgh, I could rant forever. I think I've just lost my zeal for this game now. Last night I logged in and spent 3 hours waiting for something to happen in Port Jeuno. 3 hours of waiting. Paying, to do nothing. Makes no sense.
And cancelling is a fucking nightmare if you still pay via POL.
I wish everyone who continues to play, though, a great time. FFXI is a good place, or was. But I think it's time to move on from this aged game and crack on with other stuff. Those 3 hours I spent staring at a screen I could have spend harassing my GF for sex![]()
I think I played for like 5 years (2004-2008ish). Roughly 6-8 hours a day, sometimes more. And I'd say I spent at least 33% of my total time played doing nothing, but waiting for something to happen. Not always by choice(HNM camping) but by lack of content. I'd have groups for Salvage, Dynamis, Nyzul, Limbus, Einherjar, and w/e else there was. The issue was that the only thing I could do at anytime of the day was level jobs. And I haven't played in almost 4 years but I can bet there are still limits on the access to certain areas. Did they(SE) really care if people spammed the shit out of events that had horrid drop rates to begin with, had a limit of max drops, took up to 3 hours to complete, and required a reasonably intelligent group to be successful. I get the idea that they wanted the paying customer to keep coming back, but I'll make an awful assumption here and if they polled every person that quit and actually spent time on this game I'm sure they'd find that people quit because of frustration and not because of getting speeding through all these events and having nothing more to accomplish.
They totally ruined this game with Abyssea and the raising the level cap. Although the game's always had it's problems, it was a great one before they decided to turn this game into what it is now. I can remember when you'd have to get gear from all different kinds of events, and when new content came out, the majority of it wouldn't make previous endgame equipment totally obsolete. In the last year and a half, they've made nearly everything players spent countless hours working towards obsolete, and on top of that, much easier to obtain.
Deciding to start all of these level cap raises 8 years into the game's life was the stupidest thing of all. Things were so much better when the level cap was 75. Now it's just ridiculous. They introduce new level caps just to give people something to do. Now everything's low manned, taking all the fun out of large scale events. Sure, alot of people wanted easy mode, but that's no reason to ruin the game for alot of us who would much prefer our rough & gritty game.
It seems like SE will try absolutely everything to get more subs. They've introduced so many stupid and ridiculous things to the game that their's practically no sense of direction left to take the game. Their is absolutely no prestige left within this game. Abyssea and the level cap raise were a complete slap in the fact to the hardcore players who took the time to improve their equipment from all aspects of endgame.

Reads like a post from half a year ago. If you want gritty 18-man events, there is Voidwatch, Walk of Echoes, and soon Legion.
I think MORE are leaving post abyssea. A lot of people that left pre abyssea was because they thought getting that new gear was going to be a grind just like before. When they found out it wasnt, they came back.
It's like people forget that Abyssea is finished and we are left with Voidwatch as the major end-game activity for a year now...
Abyssea didn't ruin anything. People's complacency to do redundant activity would eventually catch up to them one way or the other. Many have quit game after they capped on Sky activities. Came back when Sea was released, quitting thereafter. So on and so forth. If nothing new comes soon, people will blame (some already are) VW for ruining their "interest" in redundancy of daily life that is FFXI.
This is me, taking another break (and NOT paying) until next update.
They wouldn't mean crap if all of those who say were still playing. Kinda like how new offline FFs are "bad" but people are still buying them on day 1.
However, look at the number of people (including myself) who quit FFXI specifically because of Abyssea. At that point you can't deny that it didn't play a role in the game's downfall anymore.
There are also a lot of people who came back to playing because of Abyssea, or that didn't quit due to it.
A fair bit of it is also lumping the actual event in with the paradigm shift that happened as a result of the cap increase n' all, which to me was the larger issue. Years of efforts felt marginalized - something SE could have done a far better job handling - but there wasn't too much of a choice in the long run. Either they let the game stagnate and bleed players, or they make changes and deal with the fallout from that.
If they'd bypassed all that, and just did Voidwatch/etc, you'd probably have a fraction of people still playing than are now.
I don't think Abyssea itself ruined anything, rather the direction they started taking the game as whole. Old gear that took years to get being marginalized? Fine, but in doing so they took a TON of content away and you were left with some Abyssea zones, and later VW. Before abyssea we had kings, limbus, dynamis, salvage, assaults, Nyzul, sky, sea, ENMs, einherjar, ZNMs, lesser NMs (serket etc), the list goes on. All of which would either provide you with some type of gain whether it be gear upgrades or money. Hell even throwing together LS merit/leveling pt's used to be an "event" in itself, now you can cap and fully merit 5 jobs in a weekend with no gear and some T.V to keep you busy. While I think atmas/proccing and all this is fucking retarded, I wouldn't have as much of a problem with the games direction if a still had a multitude of different events that were actually fun.
