How can you look back at that sense of superiority you got from having good gear/being in a good LS and not cringe at the absurdity of it? I understand what you mean by "prestige" (as will most BG readers), but to see it in retrospect as anything other than a ridiculous, undeserved, short-sighted, teenager-ish vanity is inconceivable to me. I certainly don't want to go back to the "good old days" of allowing that feeling to influence how I conduct my life.

Because it felt awesome to work towards being the best as well as being associated with the best. I can remember the days where being seen with your server's longest running, most dominant HNMLS meant you were hot shit. People looked at you differently. You had fans and you had immediate haters for the pearl you were wearing. I also enjoyed the feeling of being among the best equipped on the server.

Is it superficial? Of course it is. I can recognize that. However, it still doesn't change the great feeling that came with being apart of that whole scene. Right up into 2010 their's always been fierce competition for HNMs (at least on my server), and people were still hardcore camping, among all the other things that made up hardcore endgame.

That's just me though. I know most of you who still remain love your new FFXI and think it's so much nicer finally having EZ MODE vs the way it was before, but for some of us, we reveled in that shit. I know I sure did. I loved the nitty gritty feeling the game had back before they started making it way too easy and started rolling out these ridiculous mini expansions (CoP nerf, easier travel with the first mini expansion, synergy & item augmentation etc.).

I wish they wouldn't have introduced all this ridiculous stuff in an effort to keep subs up. They should've left it the way it was for the few hardcore players that really got enjoyment out of the game.

    Fixed that for you.

People need to stop looking back at 75-era with rose-tinted glasses. It was stagnant mid-ToA, and you could easily see it when the devs were actually adding more to ToA after WoTG came out, than WoTG itself.

Me personally, I just grew bored with endgame and how slow content was being added till Q2 2010. Shortly after that, Abyssea was added and I didn't feel like grinding all over again. Well, that and taking a 3 month long vacation to Africa also impacted my decision process, lol.

That's personal opinion. I never found this game to be stagnant and I only ever played two jobs. Endgame consumed 100% of my time online and their was never a dull moment. I did that from 2004 until Abyssea came out and it was never old for me. Their was always something going on. We always had the LS split up at different HNMs or rushing to go somewhere. Events were always going on. I didn't find it boring either because someone always needed something, so when I got all that I needed, I still had a blast killing stuff, getting other players their gear.

Don't hate the player, hate the game. It's SE's fault for designing world spawns the way they did, not ours. If you didn't bot, you didn't claim. It was that simple. My Adaberk was worth it.

damn, randomly looked at this thread to get an idea of how the game has been lately (i guess compared to how "ff14 might be shaping up") and it looks like there's no point in trying to reclaim lost <whatever blah blah blah>

it was fun while it lasted though.

(for the record (of the thread) i have a sub to swtor and i haven't logged in for 3 weeks. i do miss ffxi & ffxiv, something about the series i guess.)

Didn't quite have the motivation to pursue being what you might call very best but I did want to be the best that I could be. It's a play on words, I know.

I kinda can relate with what Noob was saying, now that the game has changed so much there is absolutely nothing I think I would even want to do in the game anymore. I don't care that I could (if it were possible, no account for j00 SE says lulz) conceivably spam from 75 to 99 in like two days, the thought of doing that, then skilling up everything on all my jobs and regearing completely just has nothing for me. For me, my jobs were complete, barring Salvage gear (and lolSalvage gear on WHM), which I was actively working on when I quit.

I have considered coming back countless times since I quit, even knowing I'd have to start from scratch. But even if I had my old character, still the thought of grinding my jobs up another 24 levels made me physically ill. I worked so hard to get my toon where she was, geared the way she was, and for that to be all wiped away? Fuck. That. I spent five years working toward some of the things I had and those things are useless now. Yeah, QQ, but it's true, that pimp hat, that dalmy, that BLM hat, that roundel earring, the day my friend signed me an Aristocrat's coat ... not even sure any of those things are useful anymore, and that sucks, because I'd wear those things with pride, and I remember the day I got each of those things.

Prestige? I loved my ls and I was proud to wear the pearl, but I was more proud of my character in itself. People would check me and see nice gear. And I was proud of that. I guess yeah, I'd be bummed to log back in today and be gimp as shit. I'd feel pressured to get back to being one of the best geared people on my server. (As a WHM at least. My BLM and RDM and especially my SMN had much to be desired.) And I just don't have the heart to start all that again. I know the game has changed but part of me still feels like anything I'd want would take too long. I've spent a lot of time playing WoW and it doesn't take much to get a lot of what you want. I don't want to spend another five years getting just one job to a level I'd consider satisfactory. Do I think it would take five years? Probably not anymore but it would still take months, even a year, and that's just too long anymore when, back when I quit, I was as good as I wanted to be. I guess that's how the game stagnated, most people got everything they ever wanted and didn't have a reason to play anymore which made it hard for those who still wanted things.

I quit due to friends leaving, RL and otherwise, among other things. If I hadn't been banned a few months later I may have gone back, and I'm glad for it, because dealing with SE's bullshit for another few years just wasn't appetizing in the slightest.

I guess I just felt done, or "comfortably done" with my toon by the time 2009 came around. I could use my well geared jobs to get stuff for my undergeared jobs, and that worked for me. I didn't want the game to change, except for ease of leveling with smaller groups. By the time I quit, we were low-manning plenty of events while still maintaining big events and I liked that. There was so much to do at 75. If they'd just made leveling solo suck a lot less (FoV and NPC fellows were a great start) I would have played the game for a lot longer and I wouldn't have minded sticking with the 75 cap in the slightest.

Yeah, maybe this was a QQ post. But I liked where I was, and I didn't want to put the effort into climbing that long grind all the way back up there. Call me lazy, call me a QQer, but I loved what I had. The game was ruined forever to me when they raised the level cap. So I'll never play again, even for all the great memories I have of it.

TL;DR, I kinda agree with Noob (but in my own way) and I liked where I was too much to want to change with an increased level cap.

Its funny because you act like "grinding to 99" is even really much of a grand.

Plus, WHM is prob one of the easist jobs to get up fast to max gear id say. AF3+2, cure staff and you are pretty good to go. I know there is alot of other things to be had but it really doesnt seem that hard to make a very good geared WHM.

This is all I'm getting from your post. Getting to the next "cap" takes two months or so if that, assuming you play casually, including fully gearing your job out through Abyssea. They are also slowly revamping all the old events to keep them relevant, some still are with situational pieces and gil making opportunities.

I know where Aka is coming from with WHM. Full EAF+2 isn't just it. Roundel, staff trials, gear from various events including VW. Doing things like refresh hairpins and subligar. Relic +2. None of it is hard individually (with the exception of VW) but it does take time and I can understand not wanting to go there.

I used to be a major arcade rat and played the shit out of street fighter II when it came out.

and people hated when I got on cuz they couldn't kick me off and I'd be whooping ass for hrs. At no point did I feel " prestige or being the best " I was just having a good time. I loved showing people how to play the game and throw fireballs.

I think you have an other issue Noob, but its not final fantasy

    btw SF has changed soo much now.. I try and play and get soo pwned ; ;
