Let's face it. Old FFXI was an entirely different game. The players who played day in and day out for years on end enjoyed it. For most people, it was the sense of accomplishment that the game gave. Nowadays, everything's so easy to get, it's a joke. Their's a reason why players who still play today don't play the game the amount of hours they once did. It's because the game's gone so casual. I remember the time when many, many players would play FFXI 8-12 hours a day (some more), day in and day out. Those days are long gone. Even the most hardcore players today don't generally play those kinds of hours, because it's so much easier to obtain everything and in such a shorter amount of time. Whether people are willing to admit it or not, SE's random number generator gave people a great sense of accomplishment when they finally obtained "x d0rp" after "y kills". It might be a cheap tactic to keep players around pursuing goals, but it worked. The same hardcore players stuck around for years and years.

Abyssea changed that. The largest drop off in the history of the game happened right around the time Abyssea and the level cap were raised. Let's face it. The face of FFXI was changed forever. I can remember when players were really proud of their gear, because it took some real fucking work to get well geared. I can remember when players took pride in how they played, and lazy players weren't tolerated, because you couldn't win without team work. Nowadays, total gimps and semi-afk mages don't matter, because everything is so much easier. You don't even need to gear your job well anymore. You can do just fine with gimp gear. Mages don't even need all their scrolls anymore. Abyssea gives them enough overpowered buffs that they can half ass their job and still get the job done.

It's sick. I can remember when people were forced to work together to get shit done. Sure, you had alot of people you didn't want to do things with, and you had times when events didn't get off the ground due to lack of people, but now the game is such a joke, it barely holds anybody's interest. The level cap is so high now, the entire game is unbalanced. Everything is easy mode. Equipment is overpowered too. You always had good equipment but nowadays, equipment is way too overpowered. SE just did a bad job in general with their content over the last year and a half. The game's lost all direction.

Why does Noob feel the need to post so many times in this thread, saying the same thing? I think everyone gets you miss the old game, now find something new to complain about.

75 endgame required teamwork beyond bringing the appropriate number of BLM or Brd + DD to the HNM?

There were more complex systems than Abyssea procs in the game pre-Abyssea?

    Gear doesn't matter anymore?

Abyssea was factually the cause of the largest number of unsubscribe requests?

The game is more unbalanced than piercing spam meriting? (Really? Because I see a lot more distribution for everything than pre-Abyssea...)

Some people quit because they feared change. Without or without abyssea, the game was due to change because we were going past 75 cap. Most people I knew that left before 80 cap left because they did NOT want to go through all the grinding BS of getting new gear like they had to do for so many years. I knew quiet a few people that came back after they saw abyssea made it not such a pain in the ass to get new gear.

Not saying this is true for all, but its another major reason why things changed.

Saying abyssea "killed" FFXI is wrong. Its the level cap that "changed" the game. They had to do something though, because the game got very stale content wise and was not moving anywhere.

Old FFXI was good in the past because we all had so much free time to pour into getting that one piece of gear, to put into doing mass amounts of events to acquire points. At the time it was great.

New FFXI needs to be casual cause we all have far less time to play, far more players will quit if this game turns into stroking the e-peens of the small minority and crap for everyone else. The thing that will kill this game at this point is adding the kind of stupid crap they are adding now, they have to make content for everyone or the ones left out will bail.

Abyssea is the only saving grace this game now has, as more and more people burn through it they will get to the point those of us that have quit got to a while ago.

Noob keeps quoting me, and he seriously doesn't seem to get what I'm trying to say at all. While I do miss the game the way it was, that wasn't the point of my post. It's like he's cherrypicking parts of my post to respond to.

My point is why do people gotta browbeat others about the way they wanted to play or why they wanted to quit? Every time someone posts in this thread about not liking the game after such-and-such happened, someone else posts, "Oh god, here we go again." Why? Why do you fucking care what people like/dislike about this game? That was the entire point about my post, it had nothing to do really with the level cap raise or the change. While I mentioned that a few times, anyone who thought I was bitching about the changes made to the game was completely missing the point.

I will say it again, people forget how FFXI was bleeding to death in a ditch in 2009 due to neglect. The game desperately needed a shot in the arm, raising the level cap and Abyssea was exactly that.

How many people would still be playing if we were still level 75 and VNM and Walk of Echoes were the hot end-game events? Not many.

What I suspect people are getting at when they say they're "accomplishments are meaningless", is that their resultant reward for doing those things is now much more commonplace. If that's your problem, then that's your problem. However, "accomplishments are now meaningless" is pretty melodramatic to say on top of being completely incorrect.
That's like saying Harvard and Yale degrees aren't devalued by the massive amount of worthless legacy degrees that get passed out. The accomplishment remains, but the reward at the end that signifies that accomplishment and the benefits that reward confers are tarnished. Like it or not, everything is relative. Increasing supply decreases demand/value.

I would, and I didn't even do WoE or VNMs. I played each and every day to camp Fafnir, KB, DI, SW, Tiamat etc. years after I already had all my drops from those mobs. Sitting in Aery and mashing enter and grabbing that red mob over everyone else there? Nothing has ever compared to that.

But I simultaneously recognize that most would not. People don't like to be confronted with limitations, and that is what competitive HNMs did for a lot of people. SE finally gave them what they wanted, a system where they could shout group everything and didn't have to fight others for stuff. And even if they sucked, there's a gameshark potion and a proc system that lets you hamstring the mobs. You don't need to be good enough for a shell, you can just leech from shout groups.

    1. Requires more strategy than using brew/atma/cruor buffs zombie, using brew, or proc+zerging.

    2. Because cycling through different JAs and WSs in correspondence to blatant text instructions is hard? Because standing around waiting for a proc then zerging is complex?

    3. It doesn't.

    4. No but it's the leading cause of unsubscription amongst top flight players

    5. Because merit party composition should be the sole criterion through which we measure job balance? And because bringing along a token DRG because you need Polearm WS is true distribution?

I quit before the lvl cap announcement was even made, just to get back after they announced the lvl cap raise to bring all my SJs up to 49 etc etc. I was excited. In all honesty lvl 75 content was really really dried out for someone that played FFXI basicly from the beginning.
I am just basicly faceing the same problem now. I'm done with most of the things (or hate some of the newer things "Voidwatch"). Getting used to casual FFXI play in Abyssea was very nice. Going back to hardcore style never again <3.

Imho Abyssea lowered my Tolerance on how much crap from SE I want to endure until I see better things to resub FFXI.

You seriously over-estimate the power of most HNMs if you think that people had to be "good enough for a shell" to fight them at 75. All it took was a bot to claim and enough bodies to zerg something and anyone could win any non-instanced fight in the game. The real challenge came from things like Einherjar where you couldn't send swarms of people in to replace the dead; but wait, that wasn't fun because it didn't cock-block other people from participating.

Seriously though, other than Vrtra was there a world-spawn HNM that wasn't successfully 6-manned before the cap raise? Vrtra honestly probably could have been 6-man zerged, too (maybe he was). He had shit for HP.

Towards the end at 75 the game was pretty much divided into three types of fights:
    1) So easy my grandma could lowman it. (Everything you can claim with a bot)
    2) You need an alliance. (PW)
    3) You can't kill it. (AV)

So yeah, I hope you had fun collecting digital shinies by botting easy monsters on a daily basis. If you want to come back, Sandworm and DI still go lonely some days. The only difficulty found in ground-spamming HNMLSs at 75 was caused by other members being a chromosome short of normal.

Also, I find it amusing that you talk about a "gameshark potion" after hanging out with a bunch of botters for years. I guess turbocontrollers are legit but gameshark is off limits here.

If you're implying that people didn't camp HNMs because they weren't "Good enough", I'd have to disagree with you. People didn't camp them because it was boring, and there was much more content available at 75 that didn't involve them camping a spot and mashing a pull macro against a bot, then hoping the other alliance wipes if you didn't claim it.

You liked HNM camping: We get it. But don't blame the players for liking different content that just happened to be more convenient.

That's not really a fair comparison. Bots only made it to where your LS's claim methods were spread out in an organized fashion instead of hit macro/spell and pray. Brewing is pretty much oh derp everyone is wiping better brew Amun!

Name one event that requires more strategy than a current event?

The only one I can think of is Salvage.

The rest were: chose enough ranged attackers (melee, pets, or magic); keep hate on tank (direct enmity, kiting, etc.); and keep people alive (e.g., KB, Fafhogg, Omega, Tiamat....the list goes on and on and on through every update, bcnm, and endgame content)

That was basically it. If it couldn't be done that way (e.g., KV) or took too long (e.g., Kirin) or time constrictions (e.g., DL) you simply zerged it. How hard was that?

The answer: not at all. Endgame at 75 was a joke. There wasn't any magical strategy besides selecting the right jobs and having average equipment.

    2. Because cycling through different JAs and WSs in correspondence to blatant text instructions is hard? Because standing around waiting for a proc then zerging is complex?
    [/equip]

Because buying gil and therefore better BLM gear to kill Tiamat in time is hard?

Because inviting Bards to parties and using your 2 hours is hard?

    Because sac pulling is hard?

Because anything besides the getting lucky on the random number generator at 75 required more than a pulse to do?

Abyssea and VW are eons ahead of 75 and pre-75 in terms of complexity. By comparison, there was no complexity or difficulty to this game pre-Abyssea.

Yes. The only reason everyone here is saying otherwise is because the majority of those who disliked the pseudo-new FFXI left the game and don't bother lurking here anymore, leaving us with those who like the way things are going now. Doesn't mean those of us who find this game to be shit following those changes no longer have the right to post our opinion about it here, or bitch and moan about it. Don't like it? Too bad. SE screwed alot of us over when they brought out these trash for changes and we have every right to bitch and moan about it.

If it's truly about the accomplishment, then the end result wouldn't matter. The fact that it has to be both bits means it's more about end result than the way to get there.

The journey is, was, and always will be the same. It is never meaningless.
