I quit because after killing Pandemonium Warden pre-level cap increase, my time in FFXI felt complete, and I had no desire to "start over" with the level cap increase. I've certainly felt the urge to come back at times, but the amount of catching up I'd have to do and the tedium it'd involve (Trials of the Magian) is pretty gross. I'm content with just my fond memories of the game.

PS: Miss you Uryuu! <3 Hope life is going well for you, sir.

A couple of my good friends quit the game, and those remaining became distant, so much that I started to find logging in to be a chore. I had a lot of fun up until that point, but when you spend time playing a game to spend time with a few people and they're not around anymore, it really sucks. So that was the main reason. I also picked "didn't have the time anymore" because I knew I had to get a job and get my shit together and FFXI was only in the way of that, and then, finally, that I got banned, a few months after I quit but that only solidified the fact that I wouldn't be coming back.

It also began to feel like SE just didn't give a shit anymore. Everything had stagnated really and people were leaving in droves. By the time the level cap increase was announced I think I'd been quit for a few months, and I went to log back in just for shits and giggles and found I'd been banned, at which point I was like, "Fuck it, not worth it anyway." I was so happy with my character's progress by the time I'd quit, and the thought of putting in another 24 levels on any of my jobs, regearing and restructuring just made me kind of sick to think about.

    1) a lot of old friends quit

    2) my original linkshell disbanded and I never really felt entirely home at where I ended up

    3) my original server got merged into another (also force me to change the name I had since PC release)

    4) Abyssea and its raised level caps pretty much gave me and my salvage shit I busted my ass for a big 'fuck you'

    5) XIV was around the corner and I planned on playing it, refusing to be involved in more than one MMORPG at any given time

    6) I needed to spend less time playing video games and more time working

    7) WotG was proceeding painfully slow and I ended up losing interest because I prefer storyline/quests/missions

    8) The game was looking more and more dated as XIV was emerging.

"Finally got sick of SE's BS" should be an option, as at the time that was definitely a factor

Got everything I wanted and ended up incredibly bored, as did the members of my linkshell. I upgrades relics and empyreans over and over again, only to see them walk out the door one by one. Which honestly is most of the reason I quit.

Beyond that I just don't see the future of XI being one I want to be a part of. The recent updates have been bland and seemingly a feeble attempt to keep people interested in the game. As much as people love Abyssea, I honestly feel that it was the final nail in the coffin - giving everyone basically everything they could ever want, and so easily/quickly at that.

Level cap increase post-75 and the introduction of Abyssea.
I had already lost most of interest for the game with the introduction of Magician trials, which were absolutely horrible and the ultimate proof that SE was running out of ideas, but those other two additions pushed things beyond the line.

I don't regret quitting since the game is nothing like it used to be. The sense of adventure, exploration and slow-but-satisfying progression is now completely gone.
I guess it's better for those who are staying and I can understand that, but FFXI isn't the game for me anymore.

Not much to do, lack of any real future, lack of time with studies. Though I do intend to eventually resub for a month or two if I get the occasion.

I decided that i had to sort my life out. My life had revolved around XI for a few years and i had finally decided enough was enough. I suppose this decision was much easier because a lot of my in-game friends had quit and i found myself logging on and just sitting in my MH with nothing to do other than chat with the linkshell. I'd done pretty much everything the game had to offer and there was nothing i could se a goal for to work towards.

I used always tell my friends that when i completed CoP i'd quit and i used say it as nothing more than a joke really. When i actually did finish it i realised there was very little i wanted to do.

Still miss the good old days. I can't remember any better time in XI than when i first started. Shit was glorious for the first year or so.

I quit back in mid Fall of 2009. Burnt out was partially a cause of it but the biggest reason was I needed to get my health in order. i.e. I was a fatty w/diabetes II. Got rid of the diabetes back in Jan 2011 after losing 100 lbs. I still am a fatty but I am working on it.

You'll still see Velgadess on Bahamut but it's used by my friend now.

Lack of expansive content. I think WotG started it, because it offered so little that was actually worth doing beyond Campaign for buffer and a few BCNM. The Shadowlord and WoE stuff was a joke, and they expected to just coast off old endgame which was already (outside of maybe ein/salvage?) entirely stale.

Abyssea actually drew me back in, because it let me do events with 3 friends instead of two parties half full of people I hated that had necessary jobs. It was a lot content, fun and different, and implied that the devs had potential to reinvent the game. Then... nothing. SE did 3 of them and they were good time kills, I was excited to see what came next, only to find out that they didn't have any other ideas. VW is a terribad VNM/ZNM mix advertised as hard but really just annoying being able to tear through a mob in a few minutes and be forced to drag it out to 20+ trying to proc. The drop system felt like an attempt to prove that they out awful WoE.

After that we got the Dyna revamp, and other "Please use old content" additions that made it even more apparent that they weren't bringing in any new meat to FFXI.

The realization that Abyssea was a lucky mistake and not part of a broader plan pretty much pushed me back out of the game. I'm going to sit it out until level 99, and hope they have some expansive endgame on the back burner.

Edit: Didn't vote, because there isn't a "Lack of Update/expansion killed the game for me".

Back when I had quit I had attained just about everything I wanted for my Drg. Only needed an Ace's helm and I wasn't about to camp for weeks on end for a shitty percentage drop of a single item. It just stopped meaning the same things that it previously did, so I left, and never really looked back. PVP had long-since been dead, and everything about the game was either the drama HNM camping or running semi-instanced content like Nyuzul and Salvage, which wasn't my cup of tea, especially as a Drg. I also didn't feel like Brd-whoring my way through another "tier" of content, so that was that.

I quit right after the second Abyssea released. The first 3 add-ons were lacking substance, and WotG was awful, lame, reskinned dreck. Abyssea was just a combination of these things (pay $10 and you can play reskinned campaign!) and it became apparent that the days where FFXI got expansions whose quality level wouldn't be out of place in an offline RPG were done.

Well i had quit for a year before abyssea came out, so not going to blame that as it actually renewed interest in the game for me. The thing was like others said, it becomes a grind after a while and they didn't continue adding new content at fast enough pace (screw VW). When the game, for me, revolved around beating botting nin/dnc and JP ally to ???, it was time to cancel again. I don't have the patience any more to spend double or triple the time it takes to accomplish something, due to fighting for claims. So i would pick overcrowding, i guess, since that hit before boredom really sunk in. I'd pay for an offline version only at this point.

Why don't i prefer old style team up content over duo with a friend or 2-3box? Cause the player quality fell so drastically that something like abyssea was necessary imo. Ppl who missed the 2005 style leveling to reach the new cap and then similar endgame...that might work if the players knew how to sc/mb pull tank etc anymore. Maybe it was ToA, or just good players moving on, but when i went to cap exp/merits just before aby came out, it was a nightmare, and that's the easy ass ToA mobs. There was also an obvious drop in skill before i had quit. Once your friends move on, it's join a big established LS (nothx), or join PUGs and like i said PUGs had reached a point they couldn't even chain colibri. The few other shout groups i tried, like Nyzul and later seal farming, were also complete fail.

Nekura! <3. Same to you. I am glad I was able to be apart of volume's PW, was nice to see it go down! Downing it before level cap was truly an event to remember!

on break from the game right now, RL shit and the game has become pretty boring. for me the game has lost a lot of its appeal from the 75 cap days, but that's largely due to my old LS splitting over some really stupid shit + a lot of friends quitting.

I canceled my account about 6 weeks ago and I really don't miss it. Starting fresh on a new character I finished so many missions/expansions and had 5 90s in no time and yet I felt I hadn't accomplished anything because it was just too easy.

The easy access to all good gear also pisses me off. There is no sense of uniqueness. It used to be quite a feet to have an Armadaberk, Salvage pieces, or w/e you personally felt was a status piece. But seeing scrubs with full af3+2, empys, etc annoys me. Also, while I never had a relic, I too was pissed they basically made relics 2nd rate.

During the Earthquake downtime, I realized that I was almost 30 and still spent a lot of my time playing an online video game. So, I just deactivated my account instead of coming back.

I still found the game fun, but after playing for ~8 years I thought it was a good time to move on.

Also, wanna 2nd Waffles opinion on having a whm mule. A friend lent me his account for the time I was back. I leveled his Whm and got it some decent gear. I had Monk, then leveled Ninja and I basically did everything on my own. There of course were things I needed help with and I was happy to help friends get gear by getting KIs from gold chests while soloing or buying things as I had extreme luck making money when I came back.

When my friend came back and I lost my whm "mule", I found it annoying to rely on others to get things done. And with everyone wanting to only lowman things, big LS's are essentially extinct. Only large LS's I found were mostly gimps. I became frustrated not having people to do things with.

In the end, "real life" again prevails. When I quit the 2nd time I grew bored with console games. Now I welcome it. And football season definitely helps!
