I quit because I moved to columbus for college and wouldn't have time/money for it anymore. It wasn't difficult to quit, thankfully, because of several reasons: my bf who I met on ffxi was moving up to live with me, I was bored with the game and with wasting my life on it, and the update that raised the level cap really made me realize how much I hate grinding and breaking weapons.

I have to say, all in all, my FFXI experience was perfect. I wouldn't change a single thing about it. I got into it reluctantly when my ex got me to play it, and I thought I would hate it. Obviously I grew to love the game and even as I grew away from the person who introduced me to it, I gained so many friends (some of who evolved into RL ones) and my boyfriend, who I'm now living happily with. I had so many great experiences thanks to FFXI, both ingame and out, and honestly, I'm very thankful for everything that FFXI did for me. When it came time to quit, I was able to let it go gracefully.

Sometimes I have such strong nostalgia trips about it that I want to start playing again, but unless it ever goes F2P I just don't have the resources for it.

This ... I nostalgia hard sometimes, I'll hear the Ronfaure theme in my head and it'll just take me back to my first days in the game. Then I'll consider playing and remember everything that I'd have to do over since I no longer have an account and I'm just kind of saddened by it. So I'll never go back. I do miss the game severely from time to time.

And Perfect Defense and Embrava is killing anything they've put out since.

We took a 2 week break from linkshell events a couple of months ago and we've barely done anything since. Everyone has lost interest. Quite a few of us are playing XIV now and enjoying it, looking forward to 2.0.

I quit back in 2007 because my RL friend quit and sold his account a year prior and i no longer had time for it. I played some TOAU but nothing further than that.

Lately I've been nostalgia'ing along with my RL friend who used to play and when I told him about the new expansion, we were kinda looking at getting back into it. I see everyone hates abyssea, but idk what that is. Is the game really different now? Worth coming back to? We were holding out for ps3 XIV 2.0 but that shit will never come out.

Only a very vocal minority hate Abyssea, most people agree that it was needed to save the game from the doldrums that it was in at the time and still more fun and rewarding than anything that they have made since.

The game is completely different and its definitely worth coming back to with an expansion on the horizon. Still a year away but that gives you plenty of time to catch up.

Is it more friendly to people who don't have much free time? I miss the time sink of yesteryear but I can't do that shit in grad school

No there's also a large majority of people that loved Abyssea when it came out, but quickly came around to the anti-Abyssea (anti-post-75) side after seeing the impacts for two years.

It's not that a game based on this structure (free-flowing, highly accessible, based on spontaneous shout grouping) can't work, it's that it doesn't work with SE's content development schedule. The way SE releases and updates new content, they need the buffer provided by a system that makes things a grind.

But once more, that was not a problem with Abyssea itself, that was a problem their follow up to it. Had Square not collectively shit their pants because FFXIV failed in a spectacular manner and took a large amount of the resources from FFXI (including Yoshi P.) and moved them to FFXIV to try to save face, there is a decent possibility that we could have had more fun and rewarding content like Abyssea as opposed to the "sacrifice a virgin to the Random Number Gods and hope for a drop" craptacular content that was Voidwatch.

This is hitting me hard right now because of Vanafest announcements... I really miss the excitement of a new expansion to explore. That really was one of the best times to be playing the game, when there was all sorts of new shit to figure out and nobody had any idea wtf was what. But then I saw the whole "coming in 2013" part and was just like, oh yeah... that's about right.

Maybe I'll just save myself a year of subs and see where it all goes, and how long it takes to get there.

If you get a mule then yeah you can pretty much duo a majority of the content to get geared up until current end game which is Voidwatch and the newer rehashed content of limbus/einherjar. Voidwatch is all done in shouts, so you can see a shout and just join it to spam for the gear. All the old gear is easily duo'd or soloed and abyssea can all be duoed at your leisure.

FFXI is much more accessible than it used to be. Leveling is quick and painless and gearing up to decent standards will only take you a fraction of the time that it would have taken during the 75 days.

I disagree with you. Alot of people i know loved/love Abyssea. You got actually rewarded for doing stuff. The only thing negative about Abyssea, was the fact it was getting easy due to lvl cap going up. Its only a minority that hated abyssea, because their "leet" gear got obsolete.
I wouldnt hate Voidwatch if: the RNG would be in your favour like in Abyssea with blue procs. Infact if Voidwatch would be as rewarding as Abyssea was, I wouldnt even mind the fights being so hard, and actualyl wouldnt even mind if they would have taken all the temp items out. Voidwatch was fun to fight when it was released first, but the RNG killed it. Seriously who wants to go 150+ on one mob just for a piece of gear.

This game is definitely friendlier now than before if you do not have a lot of time. As stated, if you have access to a whm mule, then getting caught up takes no time at all. I'd say give it a shot and see for yourself. And it really is a small minority that hates Abyssea. They just scream louder than those of us that see and appreciate the benefits it has brought the game.

While I don't hate abyssea, I can see why people would. It kinda took some elements out of the point of the game -- for example, farming anything from any NM in abyssea was restricted to a few melee jobs [MNK, NIN, THF, WAR mainly] and a few mages [BLU, BLM, WHM covered most and could get the remainder if they subbed BRD, for example] and made a lot of other jobs obsolete. While this did not affect me [I play THF], it did affect a SCH buddy. Of course, we never could get into VW because we didn't have the people for it, hence we ended up quitting over time.

I do this as well. Every once in a while I still listen to the soundtrack (I have the Premium Box). It's like a nostalgia bomb going off in my head. I don't think any other video game has ever inspired such an emotional response from me, and it's doubtful another game ever will.
