I've been done with FFXI for a while now. I decided to keep my account active to see what 95 is like, but I don't think I'm going to make it to the final 99 push.

Just too much school & work to do, and this game has been boring for a long ass time. Every time I feel like logging on, I can think of a million other things to do. And the people I talk to normally when I log on have Facebook, so...

When we got 35 ares legs to drop for the first time ever for our group, it was about a year to a year and a half into the formation of our group. I was first in line to get them, and as soon as I got them and had them made into the real deal, it was like credits were rolling in the back of my head. What I had spent so much time trying to accomplish was finally done.

Also stuff like Salvage and Dynamis where I had to consistently do them all the time made them more like a job than a game. I liked helping people out with gear and stuff after I've got mine, but ffs 4 hour dynamis runs were stupid.

    I think I hadn't reached 150 days yet. I know it's under 200. I started in July of 2002.

This happened to me in June or July. The S-E Rep that I talked to on the phone said that they couldn't do that for me. I thought that he was lying at the time, but you might have gotten in after they realized "Oh shit, we are going to lose a lot of money and customers with this new payment system."

But every time I had to call them to change my credit card, I would hear this in my head:

Because I knew that it was going to be a fight to give them my money. Shit was never uneventful. Seriously, why to they seem like that hate taking our fucking money?

(And yes, it would be Guile's Theme but that fucking meme has ruined it for everyone.)

    Hahaha.

I am sure you are right. I probably just missed the gap when they started being uncooperative. I've never bought Crysta and I hope I will never have to (Unless they make it in exact increments.. I hate how it is now, like with Microsoft points).

My beef with their payment thing was when they started giving me crap about being fraudulent, because I changed cards a few times. (I think I borrowed my mom's once, too, which was the only one that didn't have my name on it.) Most companies don't care who pays them as long as they get paid, not SE.

I quit originally because I was bored with the endgame at 75. Boy was that stupid. I came back with a brand new account when 90 cap hit, and got from 1 to 90 in maybe a month, got most of my subs leveled, and started a second account WHM mule that got to 55 (was doing LBs). I had AF3 +1 and +2 even. This was in a span of 1-2 months tops.

WoW progression isn't even this fast in some respects. At least not for gear.

FFXI became too fast w/ little reward. I liked the grind at 75 for exp/gear. Now it's just a joke.

I went from FFXI -> WoW..got to 74 and decided Rift was worth a shot -> Rift..got a cleric to 34..decided that FFXIV's new patches coming out were going to make it playable -> I'm currently a 20THM / 15CON / 6PGL in FFXIV and I'm having a decent time. We'll see what happens with the new patches.

FFXI was a great game before Abyssea and the level cap raise. FFXI was balanced before Abyssea. Players had spent years slowly accumulating gear over time from every type of endgame event. You got a few pieces from Sky, Sea, Dynamis, Limbus, ENM, Nyzul Isle, Einherjar, Salvage, WoTG BCNM, and HNMs. Although a few pieces from different events made some prior pieces obsolete, the game was perfectly balanced, and their were always those pieces from each and every endgame events for various jobs that stuck over the years, never being replaced by equipment from new events. You'd stand around in gear from every different event and people could see that you participated in a little bit of everything as you worked on your character.

Although some people got bored of the former endgame events, alot of us enjoyed helping the newer blood get their gear from them. I thoroughly loved it. Not one of the events I listed above got old for me. I know I'm in the minority when I say that since everyone gets a little bored with something over time but for me, I really enjoyed it. Although I had everything I ever wanted for both my jobs, I always enjoyed participating with the LS and helping others get their shit. It was nice to up my damage output on WAR over time as my character gradually got stronger. It was fun to watch the damage I took on PLD slowly decrease over time as I perfected my many different situational builds more and more over time and the hate I could build tanking grow more and more as I added new pieces to my builds.

I feel like Abyssea was a big slap in the face to those of us who still loved the game after all these years. It felt like SE said "Oh no! We're losing too many customers and their's not enough new blood to replace them! Let's not only give all of those people who ever complained about something everything they ever wanted, let's make it easy for them. Let's see if we can bring back players who quit and attract more customers this way." By doing so, they took a game with perfect balance and a wide variety of events to keep people busy and made it into a game based around one single event with gear that makes nearly every single other piece of prior gear obsolete.

By raising the level cap, they unbalanced the entire game even further. They forced players to level even more when they'd already finished capping all their merits for endgame. They made monsters that were a mark of endgame a joke and low-manable. They made all previous events with monsters made for challenging those at 75 easy. It's a shame because alot of us would've never quit if they hadn't done this. We would've kept playing year to year, working on our characters, enjoying new balanced content, regardless of those who'd quit before us.

This game has had perfect balance? I must of blacked out in the shower during that period of FFXI.

By raising the level cap, they unbalanced the entire game even further.
Hey....wait a second. You just told me FFXI had perfect balance! Now it's become an unbalanced game that's even further lacking balance.

lol, i started playing ffxi in 2004, was a good way to not get drunk and shit all the time in my younger days in the military. and i took "breaks" over the years, and yada yada, but this time, i'm probably not going to be coming back, and the main reason is probably rifts.

I started playing rifts, and was just blown away at the convience of the whole game. I mean, kill 5 mobs, collect 10 things, talk to this guy is boring as shit, but it's easy! and you get exp for it! I can show someone what gear stats are by linking the fucking thing in chat!! i mean, this game is just so fucking smooth, and it's 6 months old, which prior to this, my only experience was ffxi or 14.... and 14 blew my mind at just how badly something that should be fun, isn't.
I'll be level 40 in probably 2-4 hours, and 50 is the cap, but it just blows my mind at how nice and smooth the game is. I mean from the install to the graphics, to everything. PvP in an MMo is completely new to me, and it's something i think i'm going to enjoy, considering ballista/brenner/etc. was bullshit pvp. I just like the speed increase, yet lack of need to be logged in 24/7.

Anyway, if i had been playing WoW (which i have never played a day of) I probably would think rifts is recycled crap, but I honestly am enjoying the shit out of it. It opened my mind to what "Fun" is in regards to an MMo
Camping dragon's aery for 4 hours every day on my 2'000 dollar computer and lagging like i'm on a 386dx25 in hindsight, was fucking stupid. i mean that isn't fucking fun... at all... the thrill of "victory" is false. it's shit.

I got all the best items in the game. WANTING to have a KC/relic/whitebox EVERYTHING (even unnecessarily) is more interesting than actually having it. So, got everything I wanted and got bored.

Also started college a few months after I quit, so not having time was a factor as well. Needed to grow up a bit, played from when I was 13-18.

    Spoiler: show
    the $ was attractive too

I still miss going to Sky in '07 and being the first RDM on my server to solo all of the triggers, goddamn I made bank.

Other than the "perfect balance", that comment is pretty accurate though.
What FFXI needed was tweaking the worse endgame events such as Dynamis and HNMs without raising the level cap and introducing a new event that made everything else obsolete.
Abyssea and the level cap increase killed FFXI for me and from the replies in this thread it's obvious that I'm not the only one who thinks that.

I used to love everything about FFXI. I believe I started in '04. I had 11 75's and so many merits it was stupid. I had worked hard to get all of my endgame gear and everything. I loved doing Sky, Sea, Dynamis, Limbus, Nyzul, Einherjar and everything of the sorts like it. I quit around '09 and thought I wanted to come back until I heard they were raising the level cap. Then I knew everything I had worked so hard for would be pretty much useless, so that deterred me away from coming back. I thought about it again a couple months ago but after hearing how easy it is to level and how easy the game is now, it left me no desire.

I finally quit for good recently because all the new content just feels like the old-school FFXI grind to me. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I have a 2-year-old now and don't have the time for pre-Abyssea grindy shit. Also most of my closest friends have quit leaving me writhing in a cesspool of douchebags that I'd rather not game with. Looking forward to Skyrim, BF3, and D3!

Yeah I agreed with most of noob's post as well. I kind of wish they had limited the level cap increase to 80... so much could have been layered into the game without the drastic changes made with Abyssea/level cap increase/etc.

To add my own reason for quitting ffxi (the final straw at least): the inconsistent fps with a 30fps cap was just killing my eyes. Since I quit, I no longer use my reading glasses. Holy eye strain...
