Couple Fines

Pittsburgh Steelers strong safety Troy Polamalu has been fined $15,000 for a horse-collar tackle on Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice during Sunday's season opener.

The tackle reportedly occurred late in the third quarter, following a 36-yard run by Baltimore running back Ricky Williams in the Ravens' 35-7 victory.

"It definitely wasn't on purpose," Polamalu told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "I've never intentionally tried to horse-collar anybody."

Polamalu's teammate, cornerback Ike Taylor, was also fined $15,000. Taylor was fined for unnecessary roughness.

Specifically, Taylor was fined for unnecessarily head-butting an opponent on a run play.

Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, like Polamalu, was fined $15,000 for a horse-collar tackle committed on a special teams play.

New York Giants safety Antrel Rolle was fined $20,000 for unnecessary roughness. Rolle's fine came from spearing an opponent with his helmet.

Left tackle Jason Peters, the lone Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman in the same spot as he was a year ago, suffered an ankle injury in practice Friday and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game with the Atlanta Falcons.

Peters, a four-time Pro Bowl player, suffered the injury near the end of Friday's practice in a team drill. He limped out of the indoor practice facility accompanied by one of the team's trainers.

"Jason Peters came out with an ankle, Achilles tenderness," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "Nothing looks to be too serious, so they're going to check it out and see how he's doing. He seems to be doing well now."

However, when the team's injury report was announced a few minutes after Reid's brief press conference ended, Peters was listed as questionable, not probable. Questionable gives a player a 50-percent chance to play. Probable would have meant there was a 75-percent chance.

Backup defensive end Darryl Tapp is out Sunday with a pectoral injury. Former CFL star Phillip Hunt is expected to see his first NFL action in his place. ... Backup linebacker Akeem Jordan is doubtful with a shoulder injury. ... Peters, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and backup quarterback Vince Young are questionable. Rodgers-Cromartie practiced yesterday and is expected to play. Reid said he was leaning toward keeping Young out another week.
