I liked penello, Hated vaan. But basch was my main man!
Anyway yea. i dont ever remember grinding in 12 except in some giant crystal thing near the end of the game when i wanted to go from 70 > 90. Absolutely loved the hunts. Hated that damn boss with 50 million life, i got him to half life and he went berserk. but yea auto bubble > convert damage > berserk on basch with masamune. total pwnage. absolutely hated his death on strike
Anyway i absolutely love 10. I beat the original at least 10 times on ps2.
+1 for 12 being fucking awesome.
Hater's gonna hate.
Vaan was a douchebag, but the rest of the cast was great and the story was pretty awesome in my eyes.
Haters.

I'm cleaning up the double posts hehe.
Long live FF7/9!!!
Mystic Quest HD remake, lets do this.
^ This. Gonna get in-between the thighs of Kailey and Phoebe.
Ashe won the story for me.. she's the real protagonist of XII anyway. its just that its hard to frame a story like this:
You are a princess who supposedly killed herself after the war X years ago. Now you are back and want revenge. Go forth! You start in a sewer and meet a bunch of nobodies who will join you.
Its just a lot easier to make a less involved character the main lead for new stories... because it helps assume you know nothing. Same with X really. It's Yuna's story as much as Tidus's.
How is that the same? FFXII is Ashe's story. FFX is Tidus AND Yuna's story. Tidus is a million times more relevant than Vaan.
its the same because you start off with Tidus/Vaan and control them as though they're the main character pretty much all the way. Neither has to be in your party in battles, but both are the default character you use in towns.. (and for X anywhere else in the world)
...Yes, I know what a main character is.
I meant from a story point of view its not the same at all. You claimed it's easier to have a less involved character as the lead, but while Tidus doesn't know how the world works he is far more involved in the story than Vaan ever was. Tidus changed everything about how Spira and Sin worked, whereas the story would've been no different without Vaan.
My point is they both performed a similar function for storytelling, especially at the start of the game. how much they "contribute" to the story is a moot point because it doesn't change the fact that they're the designated main characters of the game (not the story). Vaan is clearly in just for the ride, but his role was perfect for framing the story a certain way.. and supposedly helped to targeting a fickle younger demographic
Using a random outsider in Vaan is alright, but they made his story so boring and irrelevant to the main plot that it wouldn't have mattered if they omitted him completely. There has never been such a useless main lead in FF history.
Tidus, on the other hand, is a crucial part of the FFX story. Yes, the story does include Yuna, but it's Tidus' story as much as it is hers, and he's involved in the Sin story just as heavily as Yuna. It's both their stories on an equal level.
I really don't see how you can compare the two, but I do agree with you that they had to use a character like Vaan to bring you to a point where meeting Ashe for the first time makes sense. It doesn't change the fact that the character they chose to do that is a complete douche.
Vaan's existence can simply be blamed on SE execs that wanted a young lead for their target audience. Basch was suppose to be the main character that we follow but unfortunately, Matsuno didn't have his way. A shame he left the company since we'll likely never get a true foray into Ivalice again without him.
I love [yet understand and empathize] that everyone is giving out about Vaan being the main character rather than Ashe instead of the huge fucking change in story progression about 2/3rds of the way through the game.
Its been awhile since I've played it, but I remember being enthralled in the storyline and this sense of a build up of some epic show down between the team and the empire. Then, just before the final boss, instead of being part of that battle (or even getting a cutscene about it) in rabanstre we get a narrator tell us of it. Very dissapointing and lazy storywriting.
I felt like we got 2/3rds of a game...and if I'm recalling correctly, it aligns with a change of directors or some senior member of staff during development. I know it wont happen, but if they rereleased it, I'd love for them to retro the storyline to a more consistent pace.
We already have a Vaan bashing thread, can we go back to the original subject?
