Was it...
Spoiler: show
If not I forget, it's been a long time.
That one doesn't relate to I + II much I don't think haha. I'm still not sure what particular twist he was talking about.
I rather liked Tactics. It made sense of the garbage storyline of 4. Any game that can make sense of that trainwreck deserves respect. Now my question is, is Tactics any good? I'm about to get IV off Amazon for super cheap, and Tactics is super cheap as well. I'm currently on my 2nd run through of V, and I'm planning on going I-IV after that, but I know Tactics is part of the main canon story because it takes place before and during?/after IV. I've played and beaten all Suikoden's except III and Tactics (I'm not counting Tierwhateverthefuck). Tactics and IV are the only ones I don't own so far, and I wanna complete my collection.
It nicely ties into a few other games as well. Also, get Lazlo (or whatever you want to call the main from 4). He was underwhelming in 4, and absolutely broken in Tactics.
Also, goat.
^ I vaguely remember that, and that tactics "made some sense out of 4's story", and was going to mention that, but I didn't actually remember any of it, so I didn't in case I was wrong.
Like, I was trying to think back, and just remembered all that fish people thing, and thought, there's NO WAY that could make more sense than whatever 4's original story was.
lol
Suikoden IV was so sadface. I remember having it bought for me as a present since it was well known that I was somewhat fanatical about Suikoden I and II (III never came out in the UK) and I didn't even know Suikoden IV was out, so I thought it would be reminiscent of #1/2 in quality. Can you imagine getting a game as a surprise that was of Suikoden II calibre? I was so excited. I didn't find it too unenjoyable but it was definitely mediocre at best.
What bummed me out about III was all the emphasis on Yuber without any sign of Pesmerga. Sure, Pesmerga mostly just looks like a badass, but I'm intrigued to know more about what's going on with those two.
If your PS1 is mod chipped, you should be able to play any region.

Patches the PAL version to load US Suikoden1 data, and also use US Suikoden2 saves.
Nope, don't have a modded PS1. And reading all that, yeah, I can live with the US glitches, haha.
Eh, you just run a small patch on the PAL version, and it lets you use US saves.
idk. I haven't used my PS1/2 in... forever. My phone can emulate PS1 games, ffs. I usually play PS1 either on my computer (if I'm streaming) or on my phone (anywhere-convenience), sometimes my psp but.. I kinda prefer my phone. So it's not really an issue for me.
Well, I just downloaded a ePSXe that already came with BIOS and all the plugins, and I found a PAL version of Suiko II using Google... thought this shit was gonna get complicated lol.
It might get a bit complicated. My emulator wasn't running it properly (the dialog window was positioned a bit.. off), and I had to do a bit of research and use some tools to fix that. I imagine that the emulator SHOULD be able to play PAL without having to do that shit, though, so it may have been a setting error. (Like, the stuff I did is what you would do if you wanted to play the game on a US tv or something, it really shouldn't be an issue)
If you get the positioning error:
Download Zapper2k, and convert. There's two numbers on the bottom, just mess with those a bit, and see which direction helps. I don't think I ever got it perfectly aligned, but I got it kinda close. Takes a bit of trial and error.
You also may need to google epsxe suikoden2 settings, and see what settings are optimal. I remember I had an issue where when I went to the menu screen, it had a black background instead of transparent. Fixing the settings helped fix that up. You might also get crashes during FMVs, especially the mist monster. I think I may have had to load the US version of the game to go through that bit, but saves are interchangeable, so it's not that bad.
It's a bit of work, but after having played through this game like 20 times, it was definitely worth the extra effort to experience the fixes to those bugs.
Hmm, I'm a little file illiterate here. The files are "Sui_II7z.001" and "Sui_117z.002" which WinRAR doesn't recognize, in which I realize it's a 7z but taking off the 001 and 002 just kinda fucked the files up? I'm redownloading them now, kinda confused.
EDIT: I just realized what I said, no, I didn't end up making them the same file name, lol.
Open 7zip or winrar or anything, and browse to the file. You should be able to extract from there.
Fak you're right. It is revealed pretty early on (after each character goes through their chapter 3). I definitely remembered it incorrectly.
IMO, that twist and the introduction of the concept of true runes made III enjoyable enough to play through. That and at the time, it was the direct sequel to my still favorite game, Suikoden II.
