I'm surprised with the lib obsession with revolutions no one has commented as to whether or not this is the revolution Peter Drucker predicted. Knowledge v. Manual Labor or whatever. I.e. it's not the top 1% v. the bottom 20% as this is characterized.
that atrium closes at 10PM iirc. so unless I'm reading this wrong, they're encouraging people to bring their children to a sleep-over event in a space that closes at 10PM, guaranteeing police action with children involved? and if not that, they're encouraging people to bring their kids to sleep on the ground in a public park overnight without shelter, when the weather report tonight is for scattered thunderstorms and cold temperatures? what's the statement here, "we're so serious about occupying that we're willing to endanger our children to prove a point!" what the fuck. I hope CPS will be on the scene.Families are joining the movement to reclaim our future from Wall Street tonight by joining a child-friendly camp out at Liberty Square. The presence of children and youth in the occupation highlights the threat Wall Street's greed poses to future generations. Parents are bringing their sons and daughters to Occupy Wall Street to educate them about our broken economic system, and alternatives that could help save the planet and provide a future for the next generation.
Family Sleep Over @ Occupy Wall Street Press Conference When: Friday, Oct. 14, 8 p.m. Where: 60 Wall Street (public atrium)
Who should come? Families who are ready to join the 99% conversation Bloomberg's plans to remove protestors against their will from Zuccotti Park/Liberty Plaza for cleaning, have forced Parents for Occupy Wall Street to cancel our Friday night Family Sleep Out, but we will not be silenced.
We invite parents to come to 60 Wall Street, Friday night at 8 p.m. with their children to share the message that families are a central part of the Occupy Wall Street conversation. We welcome you to join the assembly, and bring your issues to light. There is nothing less attractive to the Bloomberg administration and other pols than to see parents and their children so invested in Occupy Wall Street that they would spend the night in a public park with their children.
The presence of parents and children at Occupy Wall Street is a direct challenge to the misconception that this is a movement that only represents the young, the radical and the broke. It does, in fact, represent all of those parties – but it's also made up of families and children who are ready to join the conversation with a list of issues, including home foreclosures, slashed public school budgets, lack of jobs, insufficient health care insurance and more. Show your kids – and our city – what democracry REALLY looks like. What is the 99% School?
The 99% School is here to represent the children and families whose voices are too often disregarded. We will contribute to sustained efforts at Occupy Wall Street with weekly teach-ins for children about the issues facing the 99%. We also seek to build alliances with other families groups supporting Occupy Wall Street. We will not be moved, and our children will be heard!
instead of ad hominem, how about you explain to me how what they're doing is not fucked up? this is one of the few times I really do want to change my mind of the subject, since child endangerment is really upsetting and I don't want to believe that a bunch of kids are being put in harm's way. so please, explain why this isn't extremely problematic.
Right, fair compromise on all the issues that lead up to the civil war. "No slaves, but you CAN keep them in inner city slums where we will arrest them and send them to for-profit prisons where they will work for free anyway"
Sounds a lot like what we got out of it anyway.
it's not the camping that bothers me, since I went camping all the time as a kid. what bothers me is that the NYC camp isn't allowed to have tents, so the kids will be sleeping in a public park overnight in a thunderstorm with a tarp over their heads at best, with no shelter at worst. if this was in one of the cities that gets to use tents, it would still be concerning but at least the kids wouldn't be exposed to the weather. :/
the atrium is even worse. since it closes at night, that guarantees police action when they try to sleep there overnight. this reeks of using children as human shields to prove a point, disgusting tbh
Camping doesn't always mean a tent. Again I agree with you about the atrium thing. You shouldn't bring your kids into a situation where police action is highly likely. But sleeping in a park without a tent is nowhere near extreme camping or extreme conditions. I have been camping my whole life too and even if you think the conditions are extreme you are assuming what the parents will or won't do to protect their kids or be prepared. What is the difference between a tarp over your head to keep the rain out and a tent? What do you think a tent is, it is just a tarp that has some fancy stitching to sew it into a particular shape that is convenient. I think you are over thinking how treacherous camping in a park can be.
it's sad when kids don't have access to healthcare. I can see why this would make you think it's okay to further endanger their lives to make a political statement.
@zoobernut I'm glad you at least agree about the atrium. we'll have to disagree about the safety or lack thereof of sleepingunder a tarp in a city park in a thunderstorm :/ fingers crossed it doesn't actually rain tonight if kids will be there.
While I agree that bringing your children somewhere potentially dangerous is pretty reckless, I'm sure the point they're illustrating is that they're there to be peaceful and most likely hoping that the cops will be less "brutal" with children present.
so they're using the kids as human shields? jesus.
Forgive me for being naive.. but have the cops anywhere been at all brutal during this whole family of protest?
I wouldn't think of children as shields so much as I would collateral. The kids are there in case it gets ugly(er). If it does, it only further helps the group.
You can sit there and criticize it, but honestly, it's no different than what anyone else in the media does to everyone else with news. It's only a problem now because a group of people wanting change are doing it in a less obvious manner.
