This week's episode was a tad boring. The A-plot didn't interest me at all.

Looked at the schedule -- we've got an episode tonight, then a two week break, three weeks of episodes, then another two week break before the season finale on May 13.

So, first question, was the number at the start of this episode the first that (as far as we've seen at least) the first they've failed to save as a team?

Second question, is it two weeks later yet? So Northern Lights is shut down, Collier is going to be involved in a massive domestic terrorist attack, and Root is now in charge of all relevant numbers. I'm shocked this was just an ordinary episode because it suggests the season finale is going to be even more amazing. That said, I'm really concerned now that Root is not going to make it out of this season in one piece. For Northern Lights to return, they almost need another massive terrorist attack, but that means Root would have to fail..

thats why control shredded colliers relevant file at the end of the episode. she's forcing her point to be made that they can't protect the country without the machine. she could've passed that file on to someone who could have stopped the attack, but if the machine never made it known, they probably wouldn't have known about it.

Right, I was getting at the point that either Root will succeed as the new protector of national security (for a time..), or she will fail and Northern Lights will be back.

I will say, if The Machine's primary purpose is preventing massive loss of life, it seems it should have retasked everyone..

Control ordered the machine shut down though, I assumed that meant the entire machine, not just the side that spits out relevant information. So I can't really see root being very effective at stopping anything without the machines output. The machine can't communicate with her if its powered down.

Also, part of me wonders if control knows of/is a part of decima. That would make her aware of the progress on getting Samaritan online, and would also give her the advantage by completely shutting down root and harold, while still holding the keys to a working machine.

Just not sure how far fetched it would be for control to be working with decima.

Control doesn't have control of the machine anymore though. She shut down Northern Lights, so there's no one in the government doing anything based on the numbers, but the machine is still out there somewhere, watching everything, generating numbers, etc.

The whole point of last seasons finale was the machine releasing itself from any government control. the only thing that would occur by shutting down northern lights is not having the man power to double check the facts that the machine is spewing out at them.

So, I totally thought they had killed the Congressman and was expecting his death to be the catalyst for the Senator giving Decima the data feeds. A friend and I actually had a discussion about this very topic like a week ago -- whether the machine would be willing to sacrifice the few to save the many. Guess I was wrong. While the episode didn't explicitly say that the machine's goal was for them to kill the guy, I'm inclined to believe that was the purpose unless otherwise stated. Kinda shatters my illusion of the machine. Overall, sets up for an intense final few weeks of the season. Really not sure what to expect from here on out.

Also, I don't know why, but I never caught that Finch's aliases were named after birds (probably because I didn't realize a wren was a bird..). Saw that another alias that showed up when they started searching, Harold Crane. At first I thought that might be his real name, but then I remembered the episode from earlier this season with his dad and the book on birds.

This whole season has has some really phenomenal moments. As amazing as PoI has been so far, this season really raised the bar.
