iPhone screen shattered :(

So yesterday I was walking into work and accidentally dropped my phone out of my pocket, and the front screen of the phone broke. I was wondering if anyone had experience dealing with Apple in getting them to replace it for free. I did some reading and it looks like they'll probably replace it for free as I don't have a history of breaking stuff or anything, and I used a case. What I understand is basically you agree to pay $199 but they're allowed to replace it for free as a one time thing.

Anyone have experience with this? & I haven't voided the 1 year warranty (although I know dropping it doesn't really count as a warranty issue).

I have an appointment tomorrow at the Apple store's Genius bar or whatever, just curious if anyone else had done this.

I shattered my screen on my iphone 4 a few months ago........

Went in, was completely honest about how it broke. The rep was extremely cool, and replaced it for free as a one time "apple buyer appreciation" .... told me the next time it happened, would be $199 though.

This is why droids with their gorilla glass should be in your pocket instead; dropped my shit on concrete so much over the 2 years I had it and not a single scratch.

I'd think apple would invest in the technology for their next iphone, but something tells me they wont =(...

I wonder why iPhones are so fragile? ive dropped my Samsung Galaxy S like 15 times and it still looks perfectly new.

You mean like the gorilla glass that's ALREADY on the iPhone? Great idea.

You think cuz a robot logo is on it then it's suddenly indestructible? Bottom line is that it's glass. Hit it in the right spot and it gonna crack. You can drop it a hundred times from 6ft and maybe it won't break then drop it 2ft and it cracks. Shit happens.

To the OP, as an earlier poster said the Apple store should take care of you since you don't have a history of cracking your phone. But then again YYMV.

Just don't be a dick. It's not Apple's policy to give one time exceptions, so the person helping you still retains the right to deny the whole "free" thing. Best bet is to be honest about it and not mention "One time exception" at all.

And you realize it's a whole new phone right? They don't just replace the glass on those things.

Whole new phone (new to you perhaps) it will be a refurb from another one that had the same problem. They send them off to get fixed then they get sent back after being repaired to be given out in situations like this. You won't get getting a "brand new phone" though.

As Vandole said, they are fairly easy to replace yourself for pretty cheap. (Nowhere near the $200 quoted that is for damn sure) Need to be careful though. there are metal things that if you don't put the screen back in the correct way, it will break the LCD and you will be back at square one. I've replaced a couple screens after people tried to do it their selves and failed. Paying someone to do it + screen might be around $100-120 depending (or less if you have a nice friend)

My job forces us to have otterboxes on our iPhones at all time. Two people here have dropped their iPhones in Otterboxes and they have shattered their screens. Not 100% protection

Voids the warranty. Plus if there's a chance Apple might do it for free... might as well try that first.

May well get an otterbox, didn't realize that the screens were so fragile, haha. I had my previous phone for 4 years and never had any problems so usually I'm good at taking care of my stuff, it was just kinda random

if you have a warranty, why are you even making this thread? they typically cover this with warranty.

Dropping your phone is not a phone malfunction, thus not covered by warranty. I don't have insurance on my phone. Sorry for making the thread, I guess? lol

Anyway I went in and they replaced it for free and told me next time it'd be $199. Yay Apple :D

Anyway, I have an otterbox, but it stays in my drawer. I hate how bulky the damn things are. Reason I bought an iphone was because of their tiny size. It's hit concrete once when a doorknob caught the headphone cord and pulled the phone out and into the ground. Made it through it just fine. The front screens for the 4 are a pain in the ass to swap out, so I wouldn't do it yourself unless you are really strapped for cash.

I have the Otterbox Comuter case (not super bulk version) and have dropped my iPhone 4 over a dozen times with no cracks and it's only like $35. Well worth it.

I have a small crack, not a shatter, in my iphone4. Have had it for a bit. I've dropped it on pavement getting out of my car dozens of times, but one time sitting at the kitchen table it slipped out of my pocket, fell a foot and a half, and cracked.

Replacing the screen myself, and via apple, was probably going to run me 200$.

Probably better off selling it cracked (if jailbroken). They go for a good price even with a broken screen.
