Keep in mind that it says to receive a company-issue chocobo you need to be a rank higher than recruit. Since the last buncha quests made you a recruit, it's a good bet that there will be a quest that gives you 2k seals that gets you to the next rank. Coupled with the free 1k seals you can get from each town as of today, I'm sure everyone will have access to the chocobos on day one (assuming you can log into your server on patch day).

Don't forget theres an induction fee to get into the company itself. What i'm curious to learn is whether that induction fee enables you to rank up or whether it simply makes you a full member of the company, and then you have to purchase your next rank with even more seals.

Obviously an unreasonable challenge is not what anyone is looking for, but having a sense of challenge and of purpose increases the gratification that comes from getting and using a personal chocobo. Achieving milestones in a game (and especially in an MMO) is a very large part of what the "game" is all about in the first place.

My biggest memories from FFXI (mostly good, but I won't pretend every single one was) came from things like doing the chocobo quest, getting the airship pass, going to Kazham for the first time, moongate pass, etc. Basically, I want to feel like I've earned it.

So you want to Gain your stuff from Time sinks. Chocobo Quest in XI had no Challenge, neither did the Airship Pass quest. Only Challenge was having the time to actually do it, anything else you attach to it with a veil of Challenge is just a delusion.

"Real" challenges existed elsewhere. Like getting Sky access, or defeating Promathia for you're CoP Ring, or Bahamut V2.

So what you're saying is give a player everything from lvl 1, hell why not just make them max level.

Agreed. I don't get why people liked or even defended the chocobo quest in XI. Was sitting around doing jack shit and trading a green every game day that rewarding?

Surprise, different people like different things! Some people enjoy doing quests and had fun gathering the greens necessary for the XI chocobo quest. Not getting something instantly (ie wait times) often provides these people with increased satisfaction. Some people just care about the end results, read a quest walkthrough and went afk for 4 hours, and think it was stupid that you had to do anything at all to get a mount. There are even people in between the extremes! Imagine that.

I think the biggest problem is that the quest wasn't in the from the beginning. For new players this will be a challenge. I remember being the only healer in beta doing the delkfut tower mission with an alliance of level 25s. It was so amazing along with sneaking in all of the strongholds at 30. When I did retail at PS2 release everyone had hit 50 already and ran me through all of these missions so it wasn't a challenge at all. Once you have one lvl 50 (which is what ALOT of BG people have) the rest becomes easy.

Gathering the items, chatting with the dozen or so other people doing the quest... yes that was rewarding. The game was more immersive for the quest being there. Getting Kazham keys was having a group of friends explore the world, beat the crap out of stuff, and take an amazing first airship ride.

Listen, I'm not defending truly bad game design. But if something is just given to you, it doesn't have any meaning. Missions thus far in FFXIV have been crazy terrible. There's no feeling of accomplishment (or any feeling, except maybe bewilderment) from doing them. There have been no tangible rewards, or actual feelings of advancement, for doing them.

Sky access, Ark Angels, Promathia and Bahamut V2 are all very rewarding things, but all end-game. Apart from the times you also got an item out of it, there wasn't much in the way of character progression. Games need things that as you rank up make you feel bigger, stronger, better than you were before. If it's well done, you'd also get rewarded with an appropriate amount of XP for your time. I believe that kill-kill-kill-kill-kill further away because you have a mount-kill-kill-kill is a far less rewarding progression than kill-kill-quest-kill-kill-quest a while-kill-kill-quest.

And I agree, my perspective is skewed a bit because at r50, much of this isn't designed to be a challenge for that rank. I hope that from the perspective of a new player, the work involved in getting the personal chocobo is a rewarding experience.

I'm all for that to, but the thing is I want the quest to be interesting. There wasn't anything interesting about buying or killing weak mobs for the greens then just wait around to feed the chocobo every game day.

Also Yoshida has hinted at there being more mounts in the future, so chocobos are just a first step in that direction.

From what's been said, I believe it is simply join a company (possible quest there) and trade 3000 seals for the license.

There *will* be more advanced things to do with chocobos in future patches.

Not a specific quest to earn a chocobo, no. You need to be an appropriate level to join a company, rank up within the company (requires seals gained through quests), and then purchase the chocobo (requires seals gain through quests).

Except, Personal Chocobo's aren't just given to us. We still need to have a class at level 22 to at least have a chance to start the process of obtaining a Personal Chocobo. Then comes performing a couple quests to be able to get enough seals. Everyone's view is skewed because we're all max rank or close to it and the majority of us already performed the footwork to get the chocobo. Of course it's gonna seem like it's given to us.

Aside from that, the "magic" of attaining a chocobo license is one of the things that's definitely seen through rose colored glasses. Corrderio summed it up perfectly.

That's an excellent point; we have to keep in mind that new players will not start out in a position to easily join a company, win Toto-Rak and Darkhold, etc.

Because CoP wasn't a time sink.

Implying MMOs entirely are not time sinks.

I don't think it matters whether its a time sink or a challenge - there just needs to be something to differentiate between players i.e. so not EVERYONE always has EVERYTHING. At the moment, basically everything is easily obtainable - in XI, not everyone had personal/coloured chocos and charged whistles, so not everyone was 100% of the time mounted up. Make it too easy and everyone just becomes identi-kit.

I'm all up for cool looking personal chocos being tricky to get, but making rentals slow sucks. Just being stock models should be enough.
