I disagree; I think that ending was ambiguous. Bobby also knows what happens to spirits that hang around earth.

But by the same token, he also knows all the places where they go wrong and might think he can avoid it because of that knowledge

Definitely, which is probably why he chose it in the first place. But I think it could have gone either way at the end of that episode.

Many spirits come to be because of HOW they die. Horrible traumatic death and all that. I guess you could say Bobby did have that, not necessarily traumatic as getting shot and stuff is kinda normal for a veteran like him but meh. But that usually becomes how they kill and all that. Bobby isn't going to be like that. He was given a unique option to enter the world of spirits essentially of his own free will. He gets to avoid what makes spirits dangerous and needed to be killed (and I swear there have been "happy" or at least "not dangerous" spirits at some point in time...maybe I'm wrong though) and continue on protecting the brothers. It's a win-win aside from the...may never get to actually rest. But he can have the boys kill him once his work is done and all that and he can finally move on or something.

The only thing that makes them a dead person a ghost is if they refuse to go with a reaper. The majority of ghosts had died bad death and refused to go due to hate/revenge/anger etc. Most ghosts just give in to their hate/confusion and turn into big ole angry dangerous ghosts. A few dont go with reapers for other reasons, but after a very long time their reasons for staying is either forgotten and they just start to hate the living or they become too obsessive over their reasons and also turn all angry casper.
If Bobby doesn't get taken care off some time (which he will), after the Winchesters are gone (or even before), he'll start to go down the same path.
The "good" people who stay behind for various reasons could be considered "good" as long as they haven't gone all crazy yet. And there have been a few good ones.

Still, it remains to be seen what the hell season 8 can be about considering all the past storylines. Are they going to open another long lost void and release an enemy stronger than angels, Satan, god!Castiel, the Leviathans etc?
