Long story short, myself and wife are broke as shit. Our bills exceed our income by probably 30%, maybe more. I've been unemployed for awhile, wifes hours were cut at her job. I've been at my new job for a month and things are picking up and the wifes hours are picking up too, but we are still broke.
Before the usual "what are you spending money on? cut back xxx, etc" we live like paupers and don't do shit. About the only thing we could cut back on is tv/internet which is our only treat, which we may have to cut if I don't start making a lot of money fast at my new job(I'm paid mostly by commission).
We're looking into food stamps but I'm wondering if your employer finds out about you applying. Why does it matter? I'm supposed to be "financially sound" at my job so it's a little concern. For my wife, when her hours were cut, she was told she could receive "underemployment". While receiving it, we moved to a different town to cut living expenses so she had to put an availability for awhile. We just received a letter from the state that she basically committed fraud by not having an open schedule. For the $1500 in benefits we received, she has to pay back $5500.
I've never asked for help or assistance in my life until now and I feel like crap. I don't know what else to do. All credit cards are maxed, no money left in the bank, etc etc. Any advice?
