Had a tomcat with FIV. He was a bit down for about a month on catching it (didn't eat much etc - but loved having company). Then he bounced back and lived for another 12 years. Even in his last year (of 23 years) he was fighting and killing mink. He was a tough cat.

Edit: I should add that he was a rare case and had an immune reaction to the virus.

why didnt you submit your cat to science so they can figure out how to cure FIV. Is this more common than one thinks or do vets not really care that much?

Sorry to hear about your cat. Adopted a cat from a shelter once with FIV and he lived to be four years old. Loved that cat, was one of those assistant attitude type cats where he was always there by my side when I was doing any kind of house work or was in my office as if he wanted to help.

my cat max had cat aids for ages. he lived 15 years with it. we finally had to put him down last week cause he stopped eating and drinking to the point he was a bag of bones. you could pet him and tell he literally had no fat at all left on him. he was also walking really weird and just sitting staring into blank space when we called him.

Well, when he was particularly down with it when he first contracted it I think the vet said the biggest risk was of his liver giving out. Luckily he made it though.

After he got better he didn't need to go to the vet any more than any other cat. I believe his only other visits for the remainder of his life were to pull the odd rotten tooth when he was over 20 and the checks before being put down at the end.

I will add that he was lucky enough to have an immune reaction to FIV so after he recovered, he no longer had FIV - so his immune system was no longer compromised. Like the small percentage of humans (~5% in the last article I read) with HIV immunity, he had immunity to FIV. Though I'm sorry I'm not sure how much after-care a cat without immunity would need.

The oddest thing was taking one of our current cats to the vet last winter. She had caught the flu... from my 1 year old nephew.

Please, give your cat a good life. He or she can still live a good and long life. It is not an automatic death sentence.

oh no, I never intended to put my cat down simply because. If it gets to point to where he can't live comfortably anymore, then yes it is an option. As for right now he's running around like a retard, chasing my 11 month old kitten lol

I would ask a vet on any recommended diet (though I don't really think FIV cats require special diets), otherwise, I generally give my cats the natural non-filler type of cat food. Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul is about the most inexpensive of awesome cat food (yes, it's actually cat food). Can buy that shit on Amazon for like $12/6 lb bag. Maybe want to control how much your cat is eating for a few weeks and see if helps with his weight.

I think the only advice I can give is to make sure your cat doesn't escape and bang other cats. Your two cats playing together are just fine. Maybe want to chip your cat just in case it does? idk
