    I had all 4 of mine taken out. They gave me "laughing" gas and not general anesthesia. Shit made me pass out anyways. I woke up during the 3rd tooth and heard it shatter(he was breaking them on purpose to get them out) and said "OW". He asked if I felt that and I said, "No but it sounded painful."

    I had 1 wisdom tooth removed years ago, but barely even needed local medication for it. It was partially erupted, all the dentist had to do was cut the gum and it almost fell out... My other 3 haven't bothered me, haven't erupted at all, but my new dentist says they should be removed because they are pushing at the roots of my other molars. We can't afford to have it done just now (I had a crown replaced a few weeks ago that we're still paying for), but he thinks I should have it done as soon as possible. One of my bottom ones is well embedded in my jaw, and will be hard to remove, he didn't say anything about the nerves though, just that he'd have to remove the bit of jaw bone to get the tooth out.

    I also need to have all my old metal fillings replaced as soon as possible as well, I grind my teeth and the old metal fillings are basically acting like wedges, and will eventually crack my teeth if not replaced. That's why I have a crown on one molar, I had a metal filling in that tooth and it cracked and had to be ground down and capped. My new dentist noticed the crown fit badly at the gum-line and was causing inflammation, so that was the first big thing he thought I should have done. The clinic I'm going to now is much more modern and high-tech, and the doctor is probably 50 years younger than my old dentist ^^;

    it was terrible, it wasn't dry socket though. they had to smash my teeth up inside my mouth to pull them out (which I found out later when I wanted the teeth to keep) so the pain was coming from my damaged jaw I couldn't open my mouth for weeks, or get much sleep. the feeling of getting put under was kind of cool tho

    and I'm glad that I had all 4 done at once, wild horses couldn't drag me back into the chair to have it done again

    ouch! yea I just called to see if I can get an earlier appointment, they havent been hurting me at all, but since I saw that cavity in there I lead myself to believe they hurt and want them out.

    Assuming I dont get the Solanis treatment and they just cut/pull them out, whats the normal recovery time? I'm healthy and usually recover pretty fast. Gonna aim to get it done on a weekend that way I have 2-3 days to recover. Just sucks cuz my inlaws will be in town that weekend >_>;

    normal recovery period is like, a day or two unless you're an unlucky bastard like me lol

    it is always better to just have them taken out. wisdom teeth serve no purpose and can always go horribly awry later on, better to get them out when they're just useless fuckers not hurting anybody

    Recovery time seems to vary a lot. I was back at work n' such within a couple days, albeit on pain meds. Waited around a week to get back to solid foods though, and it was a couple months before I was eating things without fussing over food particles getting stuck in the sockets/etc.

    That said, I had a variety of situations for mine. One was perfectly fine. One came in at an angle and had started to rot/had pieces break off. The bottom two never fully erupted. At first, I wasn't even sure they'd removed the one that came in normally. That's how big a difference it was in terms of pain/annoyance.

    Agree though, get them taken care of early. Everything I've seen with it indicates that removal only gets worse the older you get.

    Yeah, wisdom teeth recovery time varies from person to person since the situation changes - not everyone's mouth is the same etc.
    My recovery time was a few days. I got them pulled on a Monday, and my boss was cool enough to say take the whole week off if I needed. Was working doing quotes/orders for a home manufacturing company, so I'd be on the phone lots talking to site supervisors and stuff. Opening my mouth or talking wasn't really what I wanted to be doing for that first week after, so it was nice to have a cool boss that understood.

    I know it scared me because everyone has their horror story about wisdom teeth. "I went in because they were impacted and woke up mid surgery to find them castrating me!" or some such exaggeration. LOL It's honestly not too bad. I think what freaked me out the most is I had never been put under before then, and I'm beyond terrified of needles. My heart rate shot up to 160 BPM when they were giving me the IV... yeah, I'm that much of a panic wuss about needles.

    Yea in the end it all depends on how good your surgeon is and how "cooperative" your teeth are. I'm convinced that after they put me under the surgeon took off his disguise and turned into a fucking wizard. I had the surgery on a Friday and with only mild pain meds I was back in school (was in HS at the time) on Monday with very little soreness, would go to the nurse for a cold compress sometimes but I'd just take it with me back to class.

    And that was with the dentist intentionally fragmenting the teeth (like Sol and others have mentioned).

    Your best bet is to just find a recommended surgeon and cross your fingers, given the large number of issues wisdom teeth can cause you'll save yourself a lot of suffering, and probably a lot of money, just getting them out and forgetting about it. Mine never caused me any pain or discomfort but they're only harmless until they're not, and once that happens it's usually much more complicated to fix.

    Are wisdom teeth easier to get pulled while they're still growing, or after they're done settling in?

    All of mine spare one were supposed to come in fine according to my dentist, but I guess I lucked out and the fourth did fine also. At any rate, fastforward 2 years, I've had a couple instances of one of them spewing puss or something, probably because I wasn't keeping it cleaned thoroughly, which led to my jaw being a little hard to move until the crap was squeezed out via some movement. Mainly wondering if it's just a sign of cleaning my shit up better, or getting an appointment to remove them.

    spewing puss? yeah if its coming from the teeth then idk what that would be.

    I was told it was easier to take them out earlier before they were fully settled into the bone, but i was stubborn and didnt listen, thought I was up to the challenge of keeping them clean, now i'm regretting that decision

    The pus is most likely an abscess caused by an infection as the result of them not being kept clean enough. That plus the jaw issues you described are textbook pericoronitis, wiki it and you'll see a damn near exact description to what you said.

    Like I said in my last post, they're not a problem until they're a problem. Keeping wisdom teeth comes with no benefits and a lot of risks. Of course having them removed comes with the risks inherent with any surgery but it's a one-time, low risk to take for the many potential problems it eliminates.

    And yes I do believe they're much easier to remove when they're relatively new which is why they're most often pulled as soon as they've come in (mid-late teens, I was 16 I think when they did mine).

    I got my wisdom teeth taken out when I broke my jaw in 2 places and had to have it wired shut for 6 weeks.

    The 2 most painful parts of the whole deal by far were getting a dry socket, and eating a donut when I hadn't moved my lower jaw in 6 weeks.

    A day or two? o.o I had all 4 removed (kinda similar in that they broke up all my teeth. I wanted to keep them, too ) and was put under for it. They gave me 2 weeks worth of perc's, some muscle relaxer, and an anti-nausea pill, so I had a good ol' time :D It did take the 2 weeks to heal, though, and even afterwards I still had a little dull pain that advil could kill (I still couldn't comfortably eat anything solid for another 2 weeks). The actual wounds took a good 2 months to heal x.x While all the pain was gone after 4 weeks, the wounds essentially just became holes in my mouth that I had to squirt water at to clean. It was kind of disgusting

    I'm late to the game, but I had all 4 taken out at the same time. They were coming in impacted I think? Where they come in at an angle and hit your molars.

    I had almost no pain at all after the surgery, nothing painful enough to take medication for. They gave me hydrocodine or something for it just in case, I took a couple just to try it (lol) but those pills made me vomit after taking them so I just stuck with nothing. I really don't get what people were talking about when they mention pain, cause I felt noting; it was simply uncomfortable having 4 giant holes in my mouth, and in the months it took for those holes to fill up again with gum I was constantly getting food stuck in there @_@.

    I went with anesthesia, wow was that shit awesome. I saw the world through the eyes of an ant, it looked like a kaleidoscope of colors o_o.

    they should have given you rubber band strip thingies dipped in clove oil, shoved down into the holes to keep them clear

    Mine were sutured and I went back later and they cut and removed them.

    It felt really weird feeling the string sliding out of my gum flesh, and reading that is probably as eerie as it was to type out.

    mine were stitched up with dissolveable stitches, but the weird thing was I had to pull the stitches out but they came through my gums under the next remaining tooth over. man this is a bad memory, between the pain and the pulling stitches out on dec 29th after a huge dinner party I couldn't eat at
