The ones that took 10+ hits to kill? Yeaaaaaaaaah.......
LttP for me. I didn't mind OoT but felt like the shield made the game way too easy since it blocked damn near everything. And I always like the overhead scrollers to.
Link to the Past is the shit and one of the most brilliant video games of all time. The puzzles, the music, the balance... And the lore behind the game actually interested me, before it spun out of control into the current sad state of Zelda.
Links awakening was certainly brilliant as well, and Zelda 1 and 2 (I loved it when I was a kid and still enjoyed playing through it recently) both get thumbs up. That's about where it ends for me.
All the spinoffs were not fun. Sorry. And I'll probably be heralded as a nostalgia-driven idiot, but besides ocarina, none of the 3D games have been anything special. Twilight Princess was especially disappointing, and I'm so done with Zelda that I won't even bother with skyward sword unless it gets some sort of outstanding reception.
I've been playing Zelda 2 a bit recently and I've beaten it a few times in my life so I just figured I would breeze through it... WRONG. So fucking wrong.
After starting to replay TP for the first time a little while ago, i think i might actually have to say it is my second favorite after oot. Though with no superslide/fast backwalk, i'm not sure i'll be able to get used to facing the direction i'm travelling in. Like, who even does that?
Was about to say the same thing. Played the ever loving shit out of Oracle of Ages. That games was LONG. Shame I never got around to playing Seasons, although I heard it was more action-orientated than puzzle-focused like Ages, which I liked.
Minish Cap isn't getting much love either. It's relatively short, but it felt the most fresh of the series to me since it ignores a lot of the Zelda tropes and tries different things out as far as your tools go and how the world is laid out. Also looked fantastic on the GBA-SP screen for its time. It also made use of the side-quest idea from Majora's Mask where you help NPCs with random stuff. Minish was PACKED with them.
Spoiler: show
I still mash the roll button out of habit. I feel Okami is the only adventure game that got travelling around done right; Move in a given direction for a few moments, and then you burst off into a sprint. At least TP had wolf form to get around a little quicker.
Yeah, Wolf form is pretty fast (seems faster than backwalk in oot/mm, but a lot slower than supersliding), it's just a pain because i'm so used to walking backwards everywhere. I can't even count how many times i've turned around and started backwalking just to realize i could crawl faster.
Voted Oracles, think they were my first way back when. I just remember a friend owning Ages and me owning Seasons and writing down those silly codes and being amazed that there was an epilogue. If I had to rank them it'd be something like Oracles > WW = LA > MM = LttP > OoT. Echoing that GC disc with 4 of the games, they offered it with a gamecube purchase too, never manged to beat II, started Phantom Hourglass but touchscreen is making it ehh, liked what I played of TP, but no Wii and my GC is long dead.
Beaten Zelda II without Game Genie, but yeah, last boss can be a definite soul crusher. If I recall, continuing while being in the last area at least starts you there, so once you memorize the path, it's not so bad to at least get to him.
I remember the first time I beat the game, though. Everyone remember how NESs could be fickle about starting? One of the "tricks" I'd picked up in the past was to not quite secure the cartridge and push it down with the lip against the console frame. While going down it'd lock in, and strangely let carts load when otherwise they might not by pushing in normally. Anyway, one time I did this with Zelda II and the game somehow glitched on a particular save. Not only did the Life spell only cost 1 magic bar, but it'd refill my life infinitely per screen. When you're like 9 or 10, this is just godly.
I actually did beat Minish Cap some time back and gave it to my girlfriend for Christmas. I really enjoyed it a lot.
Link to the past was my favorite. It was my first Zelda game, and i've played it 100000000s of times, hell i'm playing it on my emulator right now. lol I am doing my very first run through of OOT, and its really good so far. It just doesn't compare to LttP though IMO. Links awakening is also really good too. I played that game a few times. I've never really been the biggest Zelda fan, but the games of them I have played, they have not disappointed me!
A Link to the Past to me is by far the best of the best, the way everything came together was just spectacular.
Ocarina of Time to me was not only revolutionary in terms of game play because I had never played a game that was in a 3D environment, but I can't help but feel that the game was Zelda's crushing blow that sorta killed it all, Majoras Mask tried to copy it as best it could by adding more detail to the small area of Termina but just couldn't give that feeling of a good full Zelda game to me, maybe it's just me but even with reading everything and trying to follow the story, there just seems to be a massive lack of direction in the game, and overall feels really incomplete, rushed and just isn't fun.
Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks were all very hard to swallow as series titles, Twilight Princess in my honest opinion was probably the closet they came back to making a true Zelda game and giving us a real adventure to explore, and just have fun.. not to mention real side quests unlike the Wind Waker/Phantom/Spirit
I look forward to Skyward Sword I think it has a bunch to offer but I fear that it'll just be Wind Waker v2 with a giant bird to get you around everywhere.. I really hope that isn't the case but I'm not about to hold my breath on that one.
in a run down;
1; A link to the past
2; Twilight Princess
3; Ocarina of Time.
Yeah, I don't doubt saliva and other random things possibly in it could've contributed to corrosion of the contacts. Though, I guess the likelihood of spit transfer would depend on how close to your mouth you had the cartridge when blowing. Otherwise, I'd figure being in a humid environment would be just as dangerous.
Regardless, this thread inspired me to dig up NES and Gameboy emulators for my DS flash cart. Got like 6 Zeldas to replay whenever, on top of a good chunk of other RPGs from the two systems. Would be nice if I could find solid Genesis and SNES emulators, but the few I've seen seem old, buggy, and abandoned. Way too fucking convenient having hundreds of games on a single portable system, though. I just wish the DS had better battery life since 6-7 hours can go pretty fast without a sustained charging source.
jenesisds seems to work fine based on the few times i used it. It's not perfect, but i saw no reason to complain about it. Snemulds can potentially be a huge pain in the ass getting the graphics to display right, but once you get them set right, it works great.
