If you don't have your serial numbers to your electronics, your not going to get them back. End of story. I was robbed 2 years ago, and I had almost everything taken from me. I had serial numbers written down in a piece of paper in a lock box in my room which they didn't take, and I handed all the SN's to the police. I got 90% of my stuff back (apparently they liked my laptop enough not to pawn it). Never caught the people who did it, but I'm glad I got most of the things back. The police said that if I didn't have any serial numbers, I wouldn't have got anything back even if they knew stuff matching my description was pawned. They DID pawn most everything and I got most everything back. He said I was one of the lucky few who actually recorded their model/serial numbers and they don't see many people like me. And if they keep it, well you're screwed unless they actually catch the guys. Fingerprinted my place and all (with a few "good" fingerprints) and turned up absolutely nothing. Either they were minors who haven't been entered in the system yet, or they were illegals.

Obviously your roommate lost his key somewhere in the dorm, someone found it in the dorm, and knew it belonged to someone. If one of your roommates buddies stole it, it was easy game finding which room it belonged to, if not i'm pretty sure they just played the guessing game and which ever door it opened they scored. It's really unfortunate but you can probably blame your roommate for this misshap. If you were really serious about it you could take it to small claims court but you really have to have some solid evidence that you always had your card on you and that he "lost" his. Maybe try to get it written down that says he lost it and then you would have some proof.

I have been robbed multiple times, and sympathize with your loss. Many of the things that were taken from me were of value sentimental rather than monetary, and I never got any of them back—nor was I reimbursed for the money I lost.

The advice you've received already, especially regarding serial numbers and the like (and online accounts, as well), is some of the best you can get. I have nothing else to give beyond my sympathies.

EDIT: I take that back. You've said that there are valuable things on your computer, I believe, which you do not want to lose. Sign up for the Amazon Cloud Drive service if you haven't already, as they provide 5GBs of online storage absolutely free. It's a perfect way of digitally archiving things you want to keep.

I really hope you get your stuff back ASAP, you should definitely ask if they can change out your lock and all to prevent future happenings. If you can change roommate and all even better, there's no way of asking for a single dorm or anything? Hell, after an experience like that I would definitely look into seeing if there are single dorms available. That's just bullshit man and I hate seeing shit like this happen to a personal friend of mine. =\

this stuff that got robbed is pretty old, and a lot of the info and boxing information is probably back at FL. my psp is homebrewed, lol. so there's no way sony will track that if it does go online, which is fine. i was thinking of getting a ds soon anyways, or the new Go when it comes out. my ps3, however is still capable if my dad didnt throw away my boxes at my old place. which im hoping he didnt, lol.
however, my asus monitor is new. i never did write down the serials and you better believe im going to start getting in that habit now. but i ordered it off amazon on aug 28th. im wondering if they could provide any info on my order status?

this is an on campus apartment. the ONLY way to get in is to sign in with your id card keys. the id card keys are linked to a huge database, so the police will be able to find out who clocked in where at what time, especially since its a small time frame window. not only that, but you use that card for everything on campus. checking out books, buying food, etc. if these guys are dumb (which im hoping they are, they left the knife used to break in my door in my fucking room lol), than its possible they used his ID to check out college textbooks books form the library instead of buying it, or using it for some limited 1 student services at various locations, and it would be easier to pin this on someone in particular. but either way, my RA didnt look phased one bit, and was just tired. she wasnt nervous or showed any signs of guilt, and im no dexter or anything, but im pretty good at picking up shit like that. im 90% sure its going to come back on his end that it was his card that he didnt report lost or stolen.

Sucks man, I got robbed about 2 years ago while at my wifes for xmas but they only took the TV. Idk if renter's insurance covers college apartments? We spent the $12 a month on renter's insurance, and then just lied about some cash being stolen and a couple non-existent monster cables to cover the ridiculous $500 deductible.

To elaborate on this a bit more, basically you need to be able to identify the stolen goods are yours if they do turn up at local pawn shops. Any kind of identifying markings (things broken off, chipped, marked, etc...) works as well. My friend had a tenet once who claimed the house was burglarized when everybody was out, and he had lost laptop, 360, among other things. They were smart enough to pawn the goods to different shops, but not smart enough to get rid of the info on them. One of the pawn shop brokers booted up the laptop they had bought; it had asked for login information, which had stored his name on it. The name had differed from the person who sold it to him, so he called the police.

Two days later, the tenet was arrested, and my buddy had gotten most of his things back after some deduction and legwork.

It might be a long shot, but do the key card readers store time/date/info on them? Where I work, there's a similar setup, and the readers are able to hold information for things like that for a short time. Believe it or not, it's more for insurance purposes than actual prevention of crime.

there are cameras here, too. but it was cold. they most likely had hoodies and ski masks on, anyway making it damn near impossible to identify them. but if they parked their car in the parking lot, hopefully they have a camera out there for a license plate.

the hardest part about all this is the waiting. they told me not to contact them until 24 hours since they cant do much of anything on sundays anyway (as far as pulling the cameras up), but they can check the log in information and see what cards checked into my apartment room.

i've been spamming CL, and various pawn shops, and most of these fools aren't answering their phones... i doubt they would've sold it all in less than 10 hours. they broke in somewhere between 8 pm and 1 am, and most pawns are closed by than. if they sold it to particular group of students, it would make things a lot harder. but honestly, im planned for the worse. and luckily all of these things are replaceable.

If they didn't take your ps3 remotes, you could try walking up and down the hallway trying to turn it on. They should still be sync'd to your ps3 and only yours (if that's incorrect them ignore all this). I got no idea what the range would be, but if you do find it, you'd just have to check 3-4 dorms on each side of the hallway. Probably a long shot, but worth spending a few hours walking through all the dorms. Talk to your RA beforehand too, would help to either have them with you, or on-call if you do find it.
