Mexico City Considers Temporary Marriage Licenses

    From ABC News:

‘Til death do us part … for two years? Mexico City lawmakers are proposing legislation that would allow newlyweds to apply for temporary marriage licenses, instead of making the plunge into wedded life a lifetime commitment.
The legislation’s proponents argue that the hassle of divorce could be avoided by making these licenses an option, according to Reuters. The change to civil code was proposed this week and would allow couples to decide the length of the commitment, with two years as the minimum.
If couples are still enjoying wedded bliss when the contract ends, then they would be able to renew the license. And if they’re unhappy, the contract expires and they are both free without going through a divorce.
“The proposal is, when the two-year period is up, if the relationship is not stable or harmonious, the contract simply ends,” Leonoel Luna, the Mexico City assemblyman who co-authored the bill, told Reuters. “You wouldn’t have to go through the torturous process of divorce.”
The legislation has proved to be controversial in Mexico, the country with the second largest Catholic population in world, after Brazil.
“The reform is absurd. It contradicts the nature of marriage,” Hugo Valdemar, spokesman for the Mexican archdiocese, told Reuters. “It’s another one of these electoral theatrics the assembly tends to do that are irresponsible and immoral.”
A vote is expected on the proposed legislation by the end of the year.

At first I was thinking this is stupid as all hell.

But after considering the incredibly high divorce rates, this may not be a terrible idea, lol.

The problem I see with it is men... 2 year license -> get a new squeeze when it's expired. The reason I say men is because men obviously do this more than women. lol

If this alleviates the need for divorce, what is the legal status of those with this sort of license? If there is shared property, wouldn't divorce-like procedures need to be followed?

That and I can only imagine how my girlfriend would react if I asked if we could do the two year license instead of the traditional.

I wish they'd do this with drivers licenses for old people and women in America.

I assume anything acquired jointly would have to be split, but this would remove the whole alimony deal + related splitting of things that were present before the marriage took place that happens during a messy divorce.

99% sure that men who want to do that aren't going to want to be married to anyone. Also, care to explain why that would even be a problem?

you think way too highly of men and underestimate the lengths they'd go through for being close to lady bits.

What Neoscrilla said is a big one.

And I think you're underestimating men in a male dominated society. lol

Yeah so... is mexican divorce law in regards to property/custody/alimony/child support slightly less horrific than in the United States? I can't really see people enjoying this law when the courts start getting jammed up with lawsuits over the splitting of assets every 2 years. I'm guessing Mexican divorce lawyers are really pushing for this one, lol

the next logical step is to make a tiered marriage system,
marriage I - lasts 2 years (the first divorce density occurs after 2 years)
marriage II - lasts 6 years (the second divorce density occurs after 8 years), requires completion of I
marriage III - til death do you part, requires completion of I & II
