PS2 'rare classics' coming to PSN

Dunno if it deserves its own thread. but just read it on gematsu
    http://gematsu.com/2011/10/ps2-class...tation-network

Sony announced the launch of its new “Only on PlayStation Network” initiative today. Starting October 4, every Tuesday in the month will see the release of new PlayStation Network exclusives–including PS2 games.

Mentioned in the release are Pub Fund titles like Eufloria and Okabus, and first-party titles like inFAMOUS 2: Festival of Blood and PixelJunk Sidescroller. A selection of “rare classic games,” including God Hand, GrimGrimoire, Maximo: Ghosts to Glory, Odin Sphere, and Ring of Red, will become available tomorrow.

According to a NeoGAF poster familiar with the new PS2 initiative, the re-releases are straight ports. They’re not remastered, there isn’t button mapping, and there aren’t any trophies.

PlayStation Plus subscribers will receive a 20 percent discount during launch week of each “Only on PlayStation Network” title. Those who spend $60 or more by the end of the month will be awarded $10 in PlayStation Store credit. Purchases aren’t limited to “Only on PlayStation Network” games; you can amass $60 or more by purchasing games, add-ons, movie–anything on the PlayStation Store.

“‘Only On PlayStation Network’ is our line of great exclusive games that users can count on to deliver exciting game experiences that can’t be found anywhere else,” said Susan Panico, senior director of PlayStation Network, SCEA. “This strong initial content offering, combined with the day one discounts for PlayStation Plus subscribers and the ‘Spend $60, Get $10 Back’ promotion, makes PlayStation Network the premier destination for digital content.”

The release schedule for the month is as follows:

    October 4: Eufloria and Rochard.
    October 11: Sideway: New York.
    October 13: Sodium Collection.
October 18: Okabu and Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken.
October 25: inFAMOUS 2: Festival of Blood and PixelJunk Sidescroller.

How big are the average PS2 games? I'm still on the fat 78GB PS3 and I'm too lazy to upgrade to a bigger HD because of the hassle.

    Under 3gb.

I don't blame you on not upgrading HD. The process of doing so is a total pain in the arse, and I've no idea why Sony hasn't done anything to streamline it, or release an HD transfer tool so you don't require another hard drive to back the old one to.

Also, I'm kinda disappointed these games are a bare-bones port/emulation/whatever-Sony-is-using-on-these. Odin Sphere would have looked crazy sharp at 720p, more-so if it was a proper port where the devs went in and sourced the art assets for a higher resolution.

PS2 isos tend to be anywhere from 2gb to 7gbs, if that's any indication. I'm not sure if the games they put up on PSN are compressed to a smaller size or anything, though.

Every ps3 can play ps1 games. And if you are that concerned with ps2 games, you could always play them on your ps2. No one is forcing you to buy them again.

Probably since bg has been having pretty frequent problems lately. After around 8 hours of downtime last night, i wouldn't complain about a double post.

I have 3/5 of those games. This is good news though, I'm always telling people to play Odin Sphere.

That method requires two PS3s, and each hard drive is locked to that given PS3.

There is also a backup utility, which does not.

Backup utility requires an external hard drive in FAT32 format to dump the backup onto hence the 'second harddrive needed'.

Oh, and I hope you didn't partition it either since the PS3 randomly decides which one it wants to see on it. Such a pain in the ass utility, and it also has the chance of producing a corrupted backup which I've had twice...
