Yes, it's time for another military (albeit specific) enlistment thread.

Has anyone here served in this area? I've been seriously considering enlisting into this particular field as of late and I've been digging around for information. Some of the cons that I've come across is that the job is insanely boring (standing guard at a post for 12 hours at a time) and sometimes just flat out irritating (standing guard at a post in 110+ degree weather for 12 hours at a time).

I don't mind deployment btw, but is there still a "dream sheet" available for you to fill out when you enlist? I remember reading something along the lines that the Air Force doesn't offer them anymore as they're apparently an overmanned branch. Some people have noted that Security Forces tend to get deployed to the bases they put down on said dream sheet since they're essentially needed on every base, but yeah, that comment was made way back in 2004 so I'm not sure how relevant that is today.

I'm probably going to be dropping by a recruitment office later this week but I just wanted some preliminary information so I know what I'm getting into.

I would talk to the recruiter about critically manned career fields. If you want to be SF that's all well and good, but I would recommend a more "technical" job. (I.E. a job that works more towards something that's more specifically marketable on the civilian world)

Not that there's anything wrong with SF, but that's sort of the job that every other career field sends the folks who fail out of their tech schools. you can always get a job, on the outside, as a police officer, so being SF isn't that bad, but the airforce (if it needs folks) can be used to get unique training that otherwise most folks wouldn't think about.

Air Force got any X-Ray technichian MOS? Do that, I know people in the army who got that training, got some experience, and then got out and break mad bread. Don't be some bitch MP/SF. You'll have people like me making you do bitch work.

Yeah, well, you know when a position is bad when even your recruiter says it probably wasn't something I would want to do. I went in and did a practice ASVAB; came out with an 88 and the guy basically said I had a large selection of jobs available. He recommended the following:

1C131 Air Traffic Control
1C531 Aerospace Control & Warning Systems
1U031 Unmanned Aerospace System Sensor Operator
3D1X1 Client Systems
1N3X1 Cryptologic Linguist
1C6X1 Space Systems Operations

He also noted that a few of those jobs weren't really in demand so I'd probably be sitting in DEP for a while for stuff like Space Systems Operations, whereas in contrast they're in high demand for Linguists at the moment. The unmanned aerospace job sounds pretty cool, but how useful is that outside of the military? Stuff like Air Traffic control apparently gets you an Airway Science degree in addition to being certified by the Federal Aviation Administration so it's pretty appealing.

Edit: Not sure on the Xray stuff, I'll dig around real fast

Yeah, they have an X-ray tech position named "Diagnostic Radiologist", but it appears to require a MD or DO in medicine which is a no go for me. I only have a BA so I can only really go up to officer level stuff.

1C131 - Great training, LOTS of money to be made on the outside. --- They commit suicide alot, like 4-5 years ago had the highest suicide rate of any job in america alot....
1C531 - again good money on the outside --- your gonna be working for the military so you'll never really get away from the B.S.
1u031 - same as above
3D1x1 - potential to work for great company's on the outside, keep up on the future tech -- probably deal with people who have no idea what their doing, so basically stupid
1n3x1 - MAD money, and being able to speak a different language to the level they'll train you up too pretty much gurantee's you'll be able to find work in all sorts of career fields - tough as shit training, i mean these guys are in school for a fucking year and a half to two years. for the airforce your gonna be sitting at a desk listening to telephone calls probably most of your time.
1c6x1 - again same as aerospace control and warning systems

And just read the rest of your post, make sure you go in as an officer >< i've seen recuriters pull some bullshit and get guys with 4 year degrees in chemical engineering to enlist like a dumb ass...
