So tomorrow Toronto plays Ottawa and kills it dead, then the Leafs get a full week off. Tim Connoly comes back and MacArthur is unsuspended.

Then its the Flames, the sick of the West, who look like the Leafs of old - forwards aren't scoring, defense way overpaid, goalie is good but rrrrrollercoasters liek a beast.

Then the Avalanche, a team in rebuild with strength in center.

Then the Team Formerly Known As Thrashers. Who will be riding the most epic high of their lives, coming from Atlanta. This is like the audience equivalent of going from Triple A to the Olympics.

So after a week to reincorporate Connolly and MacArthur into the lineup, and drill the PP and PK into the rookies, the difficulty curve ramps up over 3 games to return to season schedule. That's unbelievably soft, especially for the rookies like Gardiner. Like Downy UltraSoft start. But it also gives a week for the hype to cool down after we throttle Ottawa.

So, giving my thoughts on tonight’s Detroit vs Ottawa game. Just on the Detroit side.

So far Detroit is looking, well… like Detroit. The big names minus Lidstrom failed to show up. Out of all the players I really only liked two on the ice tonight.

Ian White, I think he was just the addition this team needed. He looks like he picked up some things form Lidstrom since he was picked up. I think you’ll see more and more out of this guy as the season wears on. A great pairing with Lidstrom, and I give Babcock some credit putting them together.

And Val Filppula, the perennial trade rumor, showed up tonight with I believe the 6th highest amount of timed played tonight. It seemed every time the puck was being tossed in to Ottawa’s zone it wasn’t Helm he was blowing past guys to the puck, but it was Filppula. He had some missed opportunities tossing passes a little wide, or a little too fast. But I hope he can keep it up and then we’ll the Val Filppula that was promised to Detroit fans when he came in to our team.

Can't wait for tomorrow night, Caps opener is going to be insane, especially with Carolina playing back-to-backs and coming to the Verizon Center. Hope Ovie makes his flight back from Russia.
