Why would he be embarrassed? The lightning won.

Haven't watched the highlights (if there are any) of Tampa/Philly, but fucking lol:

“That’s not hockey in my book, but whatever,” Flyers defenseman Chris Pronger said of Tampa Bay’s defensive plan. “The league’s letting them do it. Would you pay money to watch that? I wouldn’t either. That was a TV game, too. Way to showcase the product.”

1-3-1 gave us a really awesome game 7 in the ECF. It's just boring to watch when there's nothing on the line this early in the season.

Two thoughts on Nynja's relentless defense of Tampa Bay:

    (1) The ends shouldn't justify the means. Thats not a productive way to go through life.

    (2) Its easy to say in Montreal that this isn't detrimental to hockey / there's no need to grow the sport of hockey. Here in America there is still a large need to grow the sport as it is still AT BEST only tied for 2nd or 3rd most popular sport with Basketball, depending on where you rank baseball (and thats only cause NBA is on strike - when its in session its 3rd or 4th). That was a nationally televised game for the American versus channel, so Pronger was right in his statement.

Hockey is 4th behind Football, Basketball, and Baseball. But ahead of Soccer!

Pronger is obviously bias. The Flyers are just as responsible for not "selling the product" by refusing to advance the puck. If they were on a power play, do you think they would have sat back and let precious time tick off the clock while Tampa played it's 1-2-1 SH trap? As someone said, the team with the puck has the obligation to attack. If you can't do that properly then flip it to the other side and let them attack you while you try to create the turnovers. I don't see anything wrong with the system Tampa runs but I do see something with holding the puck in your zone and waiting for someone to come get you before you advance the puck. Sounds like a double standard but let's be honest, some double standards are necessary.

    A couple things:

    - I love Sep v. anyone who is not me
    - Even though Sep hates baseball, it is more popular in this country, and it's not even close
    - Pronger is right but he's also a troll, I like to think of him as the NHL's archi
    - Does it grind anyone else's gears when someone writes "he/she is bias"? Whenever I see it, I am sadness

The exact thought i had when i watched TSN. My god, Philly really got mad.

Expectations for Kings should be much better considering what they did during the off-season. Excited for tonight's game as I'm curious how well Doudy will play. O Leaf fans, a bump in the road. Lolz.

The 1-3-1 was not the issue, the lack of an active forechecker is what the problem was last night.

No, he should be embarrassed that he doesn't have enough confidence in his team, a team of fully grown professionals mind you, to play defense like every other team in the league with a mixture of zone and man to man coverage and instead has to resort to some shitty ass gimmick of a defense to try and win games, and knowing full well it slows the game down.

American tv doesn't want to see a slow game, it does the product no good. NHL here in the states has grown a lot since the lockout, and yet it's still not as popular as other sports (as was mentioned already) and look at that, when the game opened up and there was less whistles, more offense, tv numbers went up. If more teams were to resort to this 1-3-1, tv numbers would tank.

There is a reason that no other team/coach in the league has tried to emulate the system, despite seeing the somewhat successful results Tampa had last year using it, they know it's not good for the overall product that they are trying to sell. As a fan, I would hate it if the Hawks (or any team if I lived in another city) would only send one guy on a forecheck and let the other team come to them while the other four guys hang out between the red line and blue line. It's boring hockey.

I didn't hear anyone bitch about it during the playoffs. In fact, I think the talking heads were calling it innovative. No bitching at all... until Philadelphia introduces their counter strategy - don't play.

    As for boring hockey,
Tampa is 5th in the league this year for goals/game. 7th last season.

Tampa is 23rd so far in GAA. 22nd last season.

Nothing boring about that. Nothing unusual, either.

They take it and make it work, because the 1-3-1 is not really suited for defense. It's a neutral zone play only - a bad pass, a turnover in neurtral ice, and Tampa already has the players in position to counter attack you with superior numbers, and the numbers are made up of Lecavalier, Stamkos, and St. Louis. In Tampa's zone, they abandon the 1-3-1 entirely and play a standard positional defense.

One bad breakout potentially has 4 tampa players in the ensuing rush, minus whoever it took to body check. This leads to a lot of 2 on 1's and 3 on 2's, which plays directly into the strengths of Tampa's gifted top line. You saw how they scored in OT, that's a bread-and-butter tampa rush. And there weren't even any superstars involved.

    It's also totally legal.

No, he should be embarrassed that he doesn't have enough confidence in his team, a team of fully grown professionals mind you, to play defense like every other team in the league
You got any proof the coach has no confidence in the team? Or vice versa? After taking the team to the conference finals, with a system that broke Washington along the way?

Or are you just projecting rage so hard, you can see it on a wall?

Selamis is exactly right - I'm not picking sides PHI or TB, but the overall product last night was complete trash and its not good for the growth of the sport south of the US-Canadian border and for that to air on a national TV broadcast with the NBA on strike was a slap to the face of the game. I don't fault Canadians for feeling differently, they don't have to worry about the game's respec/survival where they live. Pronger was right that TB's system is complete ass, but Philly could've tried more too. Even Versus broadcasters were hitting at the point that Guy Boucher doesn't trust his players and that players like St. Louis and Lecalvier and Stamkos know they're not being trusted and not being given full reign except when Boucher HAS to hand them the keys and let them run wild once Tampa Bay trails so they can tie it back up.

As a player, sure, I guess you can say aslong as it gets them the win, whatever - but its not best for the game and thats the problem. I watched it once because that was an unusual quirk, but that can't even occur in 2% of the remaining ~1000 games this season. Fans do not want to see that on a repeated basis.

This too, a 1-3-1 isn't that serious, aslong as the foremost 1 forechecker actually crosses the Philly blueliner and forces the puck carrier to do something. I dont know how to legislate a rule to solve this issue - no one can even 100% place blame on only one team, so do you pass a rule to force offensive movement or one to restrict extreme peewee style all-out defense? Frankly, if I'm the NHL board, I just put out a memo saying if anything similar happens again, both teams are being fined and/or stripped of their final (lowest) draft pick in the following year's draft and if it happens in future games after the first infraction, fines and draft penalties will increase.

This is the only problem. St. Louis should have pursued the puck deeper. Agreed.

IT'S NOT MEANT FOR DEFENCE. And what's all this "Guy Boucher doesn't trust his players" bullshit coming from? They seem to execute their strategy very well, they score a lot, even won the game in OT at home... seriously what the fuck are you guys talking about. Pro-Tip America: Mike Milbury is a retarded colour announcer, a retarded analyst, and was a terrible GM. The only granule of intellect that comes out of his mouth is the English language.

Don't take anything he says as Writ and bring it here

I was fine with how the original 2 calls where made. Dead puck, faceoff in the zone of the foul.
