Thats what the fuss is about though - its legal NOW, but hence the talk of rule change that began during the 1st period last night and has continued through today. Just like how Sean Avery waving his stick in Brodeur's face was legal when he did it - hence Rangers fans could shrug and say deal with it, at least for 1 game. Just cause something IS allowed under current rules doesn't mean it SHOULD be allowed and changes can always be made, even mid-season or mid-playoffs.

Except the Avery rule is an easy fix. How do you make a 1-3-1 illegal?

I honestly don't get it, it's not like the 1-3-1 sans forechecker is an unbeatable strategy. If teams sit back like Philly did, don't just blow the whistle for a dead puck and a faceoff. Two minutes, delay of game, offending coach picks someone who was on the ice has to go in the box.

And yes, I realize the humor of the Caps fan defending Guy Boucher. I am still sadness.

Finally. You're right, the refs identified the Philly D man as violating rule 72 when he left the puck standing, and took a defensive position in front of it.

If you have the puck, you can do what you want with it. Even pass back and forth forever. But you can't score that way, you cant even get SOGs.

And if you come into the game coaching an aggressive Philly offence, you get the puck, and all you can do is pass it around? Guess what, you just got blown off your game plan, son. Even at 0-0, it's a mental victory.

The punch line of the night was Philly's no-game response. Merely standing in a specific spot forced a team off their game. That's a coach's wet dream.

This just in, 1-3-1 is in insurmountable strategy, if your opponent is doing it, refuse to play the game.

and since when is a forechecker waiting for the player with the puck to make the move bad? He's sitting back waiting to see what the players gonna do and react accordingly...

and ROFL at comparing Avery's antics to this. Waving your stick in a goaltender's face is NOT part of the game...playing a 1-3-1 defensive strategy is.

As a Jets fan who watched his team deal with the 1-3-1 and lose by the only single goal of the game, I agree.

It's not an invincible Phalanx. The lowly Jets offense managed 28 SOG against the Bolts. Philly only had 15. They have no one but themselves to blame for that.

    Right. Again,
Tampa is 5th in the league this year for goals/game. 7th last season.

Tampa is 23rd so far in GAA. 22nd last season.

So it's not exactly a bulletproof strategy. Shit, it's not even a defensive strategy. It improves the chance of a turnover in the neutral zone, and increases the manpower available to counterattack if/when you do. As a strategy, it's currently a one-of in the NHL, and even then how many other teams have a midget as a top scorer? I would not be surprised if this goes down in history as a "By Tampa, For Tampa" strategy - sure, everyone could play this way, but how many teams have the firepower to capitalize?

When Philly drove the red line hard, chipped, and forechecked, they got good chances in Tampa's zone. Roloson had to make a few real monster saves. And Tampa played a standard defence.

When I was watching, I thought "Man if that's all Philly needed to do... what the hell took them so long?"

I think everyone still fails to get the point... the problem isn't that the 1-3-1 is unbeatable, the problem is that the 1-3-1 and the potential response that the Flyers demonstrated to it is not an enjoyable product for the game of hockey and if this were to proliferate, it would set the NHL and its growth back again.

I prefer up-and-down back-and-forth hockey any day of the week to watching Tampa Bay trap it up. Defensive struggles are enjoyable here and there, but not every game - every now and then its nice to see one to appreciate the tactical nuances and subtleties of the game. If I wanted to regularly see 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 games, I'd go watch soccer. And Americans HATE Soccer.

But they LOVE baseball. And happily spend 3+ hours to watch it.

And if the 1-3-1 is beatable, what's stopping you from beating it? The Flyers chipped and chased, and went on the forecheck. They even got the first goal.

So the problem isn't the 1-3-1 trap, it's Philly's response to the trap. So a rule change, if any, would need to discipline the puck holder. Glad we're on the same page.

Yea that's how hockey should be played... like a lacrosse match, only with defensive blunders galore and a stick-man in goalie pads.

I don't think anyone who watched game 7 ECF could call the 1-3-1 a trap or that it in any way put a bad product on TV. Philly tried to catch TB ridin' dirty and failed on national television.

Shit, I saw game 6 ECF in tamps. And that, too, was a bloodbath. 5-4, TB rallied from behind twice to force game 7. They actually 1-3-1'd their way to victory that night - 3 goals scored on a neutral zone turnover.

It's like, oh you turned it over to Lecavalier? 3v2 Lecavalier-Stamkos-Trailing winger, good goal. Want to try again?

(Tickets were as low as $40US. For East Conference Final. Fuck I love florida hockey, they're so baseball-mad it blinds them)

Some of us American ppl like soccer. Football>Hockey>Soccer! Fuck Baseball and Basketball until the playoffs and even then idc much. Except NCAA BBall, love my Terps.

So many topics and stories on this and way too many people acting like Philly did some great thing exposing the TB 1-3-1. The point is to win games, that means learning how to coach and develop gameplans. Sitting on your ass in your defensive zone, with control of the puck and not doing anything is a pathetic gameplan. I don't think I've ever seen anyone complain about any game planning in any other sport like this. NFL has tons of formations, you don't see teams crying because they can't stop the Wildcat, a 5 WR spread or they can't beat a Dime or 3 Deep Zone. If anyone knows soccer, look at Arsenal and their gameplan of holing on controlling possession and slowing the game down. Instead, real coaches, unlike Laviolette obviously, hit the video room and figure out how to beat whatever their opponent is doing.

Why should the D be forced to forecheck and give the Offense an open alley through the neutral zone? It wasn't just Philly's two Defenders sitting around, it was their entire team. If the Defense has to send a forechecker, the offense shouldn't be allowed to sit two forwards at the blue lines and not move. If Philly over loaded one side of the zone they could force open lanes or get some guys on crossing patterns and force TB to move and defend the players. They didn't and Philly and anyone else who throws a tantrum like that, should be laughed at and penalized for it.

And call me crazy, but how about getting speed through the neutral zone and dumping the puck in deep and then recovering the puck/forechecking them?

From the 2nd to the end, that may be what happened. It's possible that PHI recovered a chase, got it to the point, and Hartnell tipped the shot in. Just maybe.

Actually excluding the bizarre first period, I thought it was a pretty close game. Though the SOG was low overall, standing still for a combined 3 full game minutes can do that. Most of the shots came in the second and third anyway, a back and forth affair that saw TB finally beat Bryzgalov, after Roloson made a highlight reel glove save.

You just blew Laviolette's mind man. Crazy coaching schemes. CRAZY!
