    A quote from enaitchelldotcom

While some coaches might be interested in changes to prevent another situation like Wednesday, they also didn't begrudge Boucher for deploying such tactics.

"It's more pronounced than other teams, but there's probably 15 teams that play 1-3-1," Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff told John Vogl of the Buffalo News. "We play it on occasion. We like a couple different looks, though. That's his right to play whatever system he wants."

Ruff also added, "Somewhere in there, there's an obligation to go get the puck if the other team has it."

"In 1994 (Olympics) we got to the gold-medal game in Lillehammer by playing the 1-3-1," Edmonton coach Tom Renney said. "And at the end of the day it's about results. The way we played, it was a lot different than the way it's played by Tampa. Our 1-3-1 pressed up, significantly, and didn't sit back and wait. And there is a difference to that. The bottom line is that Guy is asked to coach and win hockey games. And he's doing that. Peter (Laviolette) has been asked to do the same thing, and he's doing that. So until we're told otherwise, you do what you have to do to win hockey games."

Added Babcock: "Tampa was rewarded with a 2-1 win, so why would you forecheck when you can wait? They forecheck when they get the opportunity. They wait for transition and they go like crazy. And it's been very successful for them. Their coach is a real good coach and they have good players and they play a good system that works for them."

For Boucher, as long the team continues to be successful and the players are on board, he sees no reason to change.

"When we attack, we attack. When we defend, we defend -- pack mentality," Boucher said. "So I don't want to answer to other people; we're ourselves and that's who we are and that's how I coach. I'm paid to win.
Pack of wolves, eh? Now I see the inspiration.

Great move starting Scrivens tonight, IMO.

I think this is their thought process: Gus is a bust, let's see what we have in Scrivens (he'll get a few games in row I'm sure) before we go make a trade for a veteran.

I have no problems with the 1-3-1, the left wing lock, or any other trapping system. Yes it kills the entertainment value of the game. Yes it greatly slows down the pace and sometimes makes the game unwatchable. But the job of the opposing coach is to find a way to beat it. Not just give up. That right there was an insult to the game and it wasn't on Tampa Bay's part. Fuck even a midget hockey coach knows to break a trap you dump and chase. Add on top of that the fact that Roloson is a liability handling the puck the answer was right in front of them.

Well, don't be surprised if we need to score to even out a blooper goal.

I like his calm style - very little wasted movement in the crease. And he looked good pre-season. But it's not the same. Even Reimer had a month to practice with the NHL Leafs before we asked him to... go 9-2 in an 11 game road trip against playoff teams.

But seriously, don't be surprised if rookie goalies make some rookie gaffes. I'm hoping we play better in front knowing not every shot on goal has a small chance to go in.

    Also:
St. Louis Blues (7-7-0; 19 points; 12th in West)
St Louis managed 19 points from only 7 wins? Holy shit what kind of miracle team are we dealing with

But this scenario happened last year, where gus goes on an extended blooper streak, and he's gotta get out of net for a while. It is impossible to ask this team, that's designed for speed, to improve on scoring when every opposing shot on goal has a small chance to go in.

You need someone who can guarantee that fluke goals are flukes. Reimer had some bad goals, shit even Tim Thomas has bloopers. But they stay bloopers. It was tolerable before, it's an issue now. Now we have to ask a rookie goaltender prospect, who we've been slowly developing, to rush through all the learning period and carry an NHL team. Even worse, the UFA goalie market sucks balls and we're clearly dealing from a position of weakness. It's like, Turco, and that's it.

    It's hardly a good situation.

Edit: On the plus side, the kid has some good potential. And, the Leafs are historically good against Halak.

Stats will collide and it will be interesting

I'll be much more forgiving of Scrivens, that is assured

Gus is an average goalie on his best day.

He's had plenty of chances to show he can be the number one. Sadly his lack of talent always hinders that

Im holding both team's accountable. It takes two teams' combined effort for what happened to happen. Rule changes for both sides or no rule changes but the threat of team discipline if teams refuse to play to an acceptable manner.

    Because that's good defence.

Just saw a clip on TSN in the second, where St. Louis jumps at the Defense from the passive 1-3-1, and forces a bad turnover. So, success.

Bad passes are always bad, but it was Tampa catching Philly snoozing, trying to catch Tampa ridin' dirty.

It was an interesting chess-match-y game, you don't see shit like that too often. Except, as Lindy ruff said

Offence is sometimes preplanned, but often innovation. Defence is always a system, because you're trying to deal with many potential types of offence without showing weakness. Jesus, man, this is hockey. IT'S BEING PLAYED RIGHT UNDER OUR FEEBLE FAN EYEBALLS

While we're talking about rule changes, I'd like to also reiterate my long held belief that if a player goes around behind one side of the net, a player can't come around the other side to line him up for a hit. Carolina Hurricanes super-prospect Ryan Murphy (1st round, 2011, player a couple games in NHL this season before returning to Juniors) just suffered a severe concussion and is anticipated to miss the rest of the 2011-2012 junior season after another one of these devestating blows:

Well, that's totally a head shot. Illegal hit to the head, Elbowing, shit maybe even charging as he left his feet. As delivered, I'm thinking five and a game. Oh 20 games? Right on.

However, if instead he comes flying in backwards and anvil asses that player, I'd be ok with that. That'd be a statement check, one prone to fights.

"Left his feet... a little bit."

A little bit, really? He was parallel to the ice at McAmmond's shoulders.

The mere act of swooping behind the net MAKES the skater lower their head as they lean low to maintain speed, making it almost impossible to avoid a bad head-on collision that hits on their head - the play simply needs to be banned regardless of head contact / leaving your feet or not. This play doesn't happen too often, but when it does its career altering.

It was practically a swan dive.

Could have been just as pwned with a hip check, totally legal.
