@HLundqvist30 @kevinweekes When the Dos Equis'(most interesting man in the world) guy passes away. Henrik will replace him.
Carey Price is fucking HORRID at shootouts...might as well leave the net empty.
Yeah it was a good game, bummer it had to end in a SO.
Getting good play from the free agents we picked up in the offseason is mitigating the loss of Richards, but by no means did it work out for the best. He should have been moved prior to the trade deadline so we wouldn't lose him for nothing. The Stars mishandled that situation to the upteenth power. It is nice to see Ryder, Nystrom, and Souray mesh well with our club though. Kudos to the front office for those moves.
My goalie stats this week are 2W 1.68 GAA .946 SV%...and I'm getting curbed stomped in those departments, lol
unrelated, but the Pens/Caps sleeper from last night is up as one of the 4 front-page items on ESPN.com, wow
even more unrelateder but Mike Grier officially retires, Wayne Simmonds is officially the Blacklander now
Breaking News: Paulina Gretzky's twitter feed is back up.
I don't agree. You'd be hard pressed to find any GM who moves their best player a year early (when at the time ownership seemed to be on track to be resolved by Feb) just "in case." This isn't NHL12, GMs aim to make the playoffs every year instead of looking to mitigate "what ifs".
A year early? Uh, try 5 months. Trade deadline was Feb. 1 and there were teams probing about Richards. Free Agency began July 1. GMs do it all the time. If a player refuses to sign an extension, you move them before they hit the free market so you can get some compensation for them and not lose them for absolutely nothing. They didn't even make the playoffs so that holding out thing backfired. They couldn't afford to keep Richards so that was a double blow. If you're comfortable just being in the playoffs every year, then sure, but if you want a legit chance to win a cup, then you make the best move possible for the future of the club. Holding onto Richards was the wrong thing to do.
Richards had a limited NTC where he could name 6 places he would be willing to go or something, and all of the places he named were not willing to give up what Dallas wanted for a short term rental iirc. It might have even been a full NTC, I am not sure.
Yea, I remember that, but "almost" anything was better than nothing. At the very least, they should have tried to get something that was worth them missing the playoffs that one time instead of holding on to Richards and hoping that they made it for 1 last hooplah. Richards was gone as soon as the deadline passed. It's like the Stars were holding onto a soon-to-be ex-girlfriend instead of getting a head start on grooming the future potential dating pool (ok the analogy broke down there at the end, but you get my point).
The Stars did try to move him in the off season for picks at least but Richards came out and said "I'll veto any trade"
Richards just didnt give a shit at all about helping the Stars.
Oh man, I gave you the benefit of the doubt as a Stars fan and thought you couldn't really mean the trade deadline. You're serious? Richards was in the middle of a concussion and no one had any idea of when he would play again. His trade value was at an all time low, and it was well documented that the only offers GM Joe received was Christensen and a 2nd. On top of that Brad had a full NTC that he exercised in the offseason because he "didn't want to damage his future team's assets." ON TOP OF THAT Brad publicly said he had no desire to leave Dallas as they were winning and in a playoff position at the trade deadline.Which is exactly why he should have been shipped off before the trade deadline. He was injured at the time too. I just don't know what the Stars were thinking. Too focused on the super immediate furture I guess.
GMs also don't do it all the time when their team is in a playoff position or on the bubble. Despite what people like to think, it is not common practice for teams within reach of the playoffs to deal their impending UFA star players. Kovelchuk, Bouwmeister, Richards, and I guarantee you NJ isn't trading Pairse this trade deadline if they're in the top 8-9. It happens less often than it does happen, so I'm not sure why people think there's some precedent for GMs giving up on their teams season despite being within playoff position. It sends a bad message to the rest of the lockerroom and it just doesn't happen.GMs do it all the time. If a player refuses to sign an extension, you move them before they hit the free market so you can get some compensation for them and not lose them for absolutely nothing.
One game, one point. Tied a record for most points ever to end up missing the POs.. Hindsight is 20/20. If they had made the POs everyone would have been singing a different tune about GM Joe not backing down and believing in his club. The chance at playoff revenue for a team bleeding money was worth way more than EC + 2nd, that's assuming Richards even would have waived the NTC despite saying he didn't want to leave a playoff club. In fact when they did try to get something for him later he said the exact same thing. They didn't even make the playoffs so that holding out thing backfired.
So I guess your position is the Stars should have lobbied him to leave an at the time playoff club, tanking the rest of their season, telling the entire team and fans they're giving up, all to get shitty returns on a player with little to no trade value at the time. And somehow convinced him to waive his NTC. Joe made the right call, you value your shot at the playoffs and playoff revenue for a team that hadn't made it in 2 years over other teams' scraps.
Dallas made the playoffs
