Can Ben Lovejoy get ANY worse? How is he even still in the NHL? He was terrible in the first 2 games @Van/Calgary, and last night he had a dumb penalty, 2 icings, and was out there for Edmonton's lone goal and a -1.

And can Tyler Kennedy possibly shoot any more than he already does?

Well... that was... something.

Thoughts on the TORvOTT game:
-Another sluggish start for the first 6 minutes. Need to show up ready to play.

-Ottawa is not very good. This may have skewed the data.

-Our PK is vastly improved when Steckel wins all the faceoffs. The PP is showing a pulse.

-Up to the third period, I wouldn't change anything about the Leafs offense. Everybody was in the passing lanes today, and the pressure on Ottawa's end was uncanny. Frattin hasn't broken the MGK lineup - If anything, they were up to the same good stuff as when MacArthur was in. I'm shocked to say this but Komisarek played well. He blocked shots, fought along the boards, and made decent passes.

-Don't skate with your head down, ya fuckin' newb! He was bracketed by leafs on both sides, and Phaneuf comes right through them both. He is now a Maple Leaf deli meat.

-Then we hit the third period, and I'm convinced those 20 minutes was early season gaffes. First of all, you're leading 5-1 against the Sens. They've been bad all night, and the shutout has been blown, so the first rookie mistake rears its head - The leafs clearly let out a breath and collectively relaxed. This game is over, there's no point in going for 7-1, so it's time to coast. Ottawa came into the third angry and hungry for pucks and that was almost all it took to spook Leafland.

On the first Alfredsson goal - as he leaves the penalty box - Reimer is banging his stick and screaming at the leafs to pull back, the penalty is expiring, but no one notices and Alfredsson gets a pass airmailed, same-day-shipping, right to his front. Rookie mistake - minors are 2 min long.

On the 8 Second Goal, Alfredsson skates to the net, behind the Leafs Dline, and magically appears in the shooting lane to tip the shot. Blown coverage happens, but blown coverage off a faceoff IS a rookie mistake.

On both other goals, Reimer and everyone had a chance at stopping them, but didn't. One was lost in traffic in the crease... and it's already been 2 days I can't remember. And shit happens, it's forgivable. But letting in 2 goals is okay when you're leading 5-1, right? And it's exactly that thought-extension that threatened to get the leafs in trouble. This thinking is rookie and must be purged.

Kessel's not much for dekeing - he goes for the shot - but he was pretty slick tonight, one of those shots was a gimme-softy right in front of Anderson. First Hatty in Blue and White, Phil Kessel now leads the league in most offensive categories.

Oh and Colton Orr got a goal, which was uproariously funny. The best part is when they showed the replay, you can clearly see Orr being robbed of the puck in the slot and losing his footing. But the Leafs immediately steal it back and press, Orr drives the net hard and tips it past Auld from the outside of the crease. A classic Orr failure turned into an epic success.

Other thoughts:
-Gardiner never saw the ice after the Sens' 2nd goal @11 into the 3rd. No longer a superdynamo in his first 2 NHL reg season games, there's talk he's AHL-bound. No point in sitting a prospect on the bench.

-Carl Gunnarson and Dion Phaneuf played defense in almost all important situations. This is probably now the Leafs top D-Line.

-David Steckel was more than a faceoff junkie. He blocked shots, he blocked a shot that broke his stick, and then he kept blocking shots. He was in the 2 on 1 for Kessel's hatty - just relevant enough to draw the D to center and open up a lane for Phil's Philthy Lazor Bheam.

-Kessel's got one of the, if not THE, top snappers in the league. When he isn't producing, I'd like to see more of the Kessel that was on the ice for the dying minutes, holding the puck from the Sens so they couldn't get it.

-Kulemin is never on the ice without Grabovski, and vice versa. They're the most valuable forwards we have, and we pay them under $3M/season. Oh Yea.gif

-Why. Does. Brian. Murray. Have. A. Job? Gonchar is being paid major dollars to play for that club and his production has abandoned the cliff completely. Two years ago, this was almost a Cup team, now it's a motley collection of kids. Half the team is in the minors. When Alfie goes, who becomes captain? Spezza?(No). Anyone?

So I guess, to summarize:

The defence was concerning in the third. James Reimer showed shades of average after two periods of stellar. Phil Kessel isn’t from this planet. Orr got a goal (insert ludicrous season pace joke here). The Leafs beat the Sens. The Marlies beat the Baby Sens. We're still the Best in Ontario. Dany Heatley scored for Minnesota
